: CLOSED — Shaw Gateway: Code update to iS2 & iS2+

You can set it to record first-run-only, or repeats. You can keep 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 or unlimited episodes. You can record all timeslots or pick just one.
I record a soap for my wife that is on twice a day at different times on different channels. Setting it to the 4pm timeslot and first-run-only records the 4pm show daily on just the one channel (which is what we want).
I record a series for my daughter that's on many times a day seven days a week. Setting it to first-run-only for the 7pm timeslot records just one show a week (which is want we want).
My old DCT6412 used to record extra episodes at 3am and odd times. Maybe this was because the "first-run" flag was in error. Anyway, I'm glad to be rid of that problem.
I too was leary of all the problems with the gateway system. I absolutely had to have the functionality of watching recording shows on any TV because as the kids have gotten older and have friends over, I found that increasingly they hogged the TV with the PVR and I couldn't watch when I wanted to. I bit the bullet in December and got the gateway system. It sounded unbareable last summer but I jumped in after the two software updates and it's not horrible, overall. Fast-forward and skip are horrible, and all the menus are realy slow, but I'm hoping that will improve.

I think it is fair to say that we here are looking for improvements, where a lot of other people simply just live with it... If you don't point out the problems they don't get fixed, so we point them out. I don't regret for a second getting the gateway, and have added portals since my original purchase.
There is always room for improvement, and the code releases do make things better. Speaking for myself of course, I looked at other options before I jumped in, but there appears to be a desire to make things better so I enthusiastically await the next code release, and the ones after that...

I had the Gateway and three portals installed almost two weeks ago. Took about an hour for the install and software upgrades, and all went smoothly.
Performance is fine and seems better than the Motorolas I had previously. I have seen what others have mentioned where the grid guide goes blank for a few seconds sometimes. I don't find the menus slow.
The portals upscale 480i content much better than the Motorolas. I used to have to passthrough 480i content with the Motorola PVRs to let my TV upscale it, but I don't find that necessary now.
I had a problem where the Gateway clock was 93 seconds fast. A reboot cleared that up. I'll continue to watch it to see if it drifts.
I haven't had any freezes, macroblocking, dropouts, or other issues. Skip and fast forward work fine. I live in a relatively new neighbourhood and house, and Shaw services have always performed well here. Maybe the newer cabling helps.

Hello everyone, I have been following this forum for a while because I am interested in switching to shaw, and getting the gateway system, however I am reluctant because of everything I am reading here. It's almost hard to believe it can be that bad.
And therein lies the danger of reading forums frequented by (mostly) early adopters with very high technical knowledge and performance standards.
For the price I paid for the Gateway and two Portals ($198), I can overlook a few minor (to me) issues. My 3416 isn't perfect either (e.g. drive space indicator when using a PVR expander). If I had to pay the current price ($676, which I would NOT pay), I'd be less forgiving.
As always with these sort of things, YMMV.

Well the tech came and went today. Tested out my entire wiring. No issues found inside my house or anything the initial tech setup. So my entire setup is good and fully tested with the MoCA equipment.
They are saying its my Shaw network in my neighbourhood causing the issues, even though my BB50 works very well and never had an issue in the past and nor with my regular Shaw PVR's.
So, its back to square one.
I now am in talks with one of the Calgary "Gateway Ninja Team" supervisors.

Got my gateway + 2 portals installed today...took just over 3 hours as the first gateway was defective so he had to go back to the office and get a new one...
I setup my Harmony and so far so good...the guide is a huge improvement as are the recording options.
my only con so far is that there is definite noticeable delay when pressing buttons the remote.
i'm having issues with channels 247-50 not working...but i had issues before the new hardware as well so not related to that...shaw's coming on saturday to fix that.

You should have asked the tech today if they could have checked your service for the filter that is preventing you from getting those channels. I guess if it's up in the air and today's tech didn't have the 'equipment' to reach it, that would explain why they wouldn't have taken care of it for you but most drops are more accessible without a bucket than with, I would think anyway.

By "not working", do you get the "not subscribed" message? I had a great number of channels in that state after the installer left. I called support and they had to "push" the channel set out to my gateway again.
2012-02-07, 12:04 PM
Yeah, I had that problem as well, and they pushed it to me. I think the Gateway hadn't been added to my account properly, or something like that.

So if it is recommended in this thread that we keep the portal set to 1080i because 1080P can cause problems, how do we take advantage of the new 1080P VOD feature of EXO? Wait for a Gateway update that fixes 1080P?
2012-02-07, 04:18 PM
make sure you have 1080i selected as well as 1080p and you should be ok

Regarding my missing channels - they were working until about a week ago (at least that I noticed)...I was in an old grandfathered plan and changed to a new bundle when I signed up for the new hardware...ever since then channels 247-250 have said something like "This channel will be available shortly"...
Spent a good 30 minutes on the phone while they reset stuff, and upgraded the firmware(?), and eventually gave up...they're sending someone on Saturday to look.
2012-02-07, 04:30 PM
When my missing channels were fixed by re-pushing the channel list to my box, I can't remember if my message was "call for subscription" or "will be available shortly". Hard to say if your problem is the same or not.
My box would lock up if I tried to change channels with the up/down channel button on the remote. The push operation from their end is different for the old Motorolas and the gateway. Who knows if they did the right thing yet? ;-)
My missing channels were spread all through the range, even down in the 20's and up into the HD range (200+).

So the portal knows when to use 1080P as opposed to 1080i if both are selected?
2012-02-07, 04:55 PM
The portal will output in the same resolution as the source material if that resolution is in one of the available resolutions selected in the settings menu for the portal. If the source resolution is not one of the selected options on that portal, the portal will convert to one of the selected options. For your 1080p VOD, select the 1080p option as available on the portal but leave 1080i and/or 720p options selected too for the other source material to avoid having the portal scale up to 1080p.

but leave 1080i and/or 720p options selected too for the other source material to avoid having the portal scale up to 1080p.
I personally would say or rather than and/or. To me, the visual difference between the 720p and 1080i is negligible, and the downside is a channel switching delay as the TV and any media equipment renegotiates the connection at the new resolution/refresh rate. On my primary TV, this can be several seconds.
I have mine set to 1080i, and it doesn't seem to upscale 720p content to 1080p. I'm not sure if the same holds true for 720p not upscaling 1080i to 1080p.

If that setup works best for you, great. Setting just 1080i is how my 3400 works best (avoids the long delays on channel changes) but for the portals, I have 1080i and 720p selected and that works well for my setup with no noticeable delay on channel changes. This is using the same TVs so the portals are faster at switching resolutions between channels than the 3400, at least for my TVs. I think the and vs. or will be dependent on the TVs each portal is working with.
If you select 1080p and 720p for your portals settings, I wonder what the portal does with 1080i source? Up to 1080p or down to 720p?

Can the Arris portal part of the gateway system display channel instead of time ?
If so, how ?
Failing that, can you have channel display on TV ?

After 1 month, my gateway system starts to give me trouble. For the last few days, one channel does not sound. Today, I phoned tech support. We did lots of power cycles and resets in between power cycles. The portal in my family room does not have sound on that specialty channel. My basement portal has sound for that channel. Booked a service call for next Tuesday.
After the tech support calls, I switched the family room portal with the one in the basement. The problem moves with the family room portal. Therefore, it is not the cabling issue. It may be hardware problem. I don't understand that why only one channel out of my subscribed channels has not sound?
The tech support rep told me that there was a new firmware released on Jan 18th for the gateway. She did force update at her end. After update, it did not solved my problem.
Portal 7.0.1b.9X5R-P.342538 (no change)

I really don't know what's going on with the Gateway. The time between resets to clear the freezing is reducing rapidly. No issues for almost two weeks after install, then a week after reset, then 3 days, now less than 24 hours. Man I hope the service call we have booked or some miraculous firmware fix sorts this out because the WAF is now zero and I'm personally fed up to the point of re-connecting the Moto box until I get some resolution....
