: CLOSED — Shaw Gateway: Code update to iS2 & iS2+
2012-01-27, 02:04 PM
Doh, of course Cowtown ;-)
Another thing you can try is set it to record in a different timeslot or channel and see if that makes any difference.
Or even set it to record in multiple timeslots/channels and see which one records properly. Then make that the single recording and remove the rest.

DIDN'T Shaw tell you were beta tester's for the NEW gateway
2012-01-27, 06:55 PM
No, they didn't, is was not implied either..
Just because something is new to the market does not immediately infer that you are going to be a beta tester..
If that was (or is) going to be the case, my service for being a tester would also be a given...IE FREE service for the duration of the testing period.
If you (or anyone else here) is a Shaw CSR, feel free to PM me for my account information, so you can apply such credit...

WHAT I'm to trying to say before they sold this product they should have made sure it work near capacity.it's jan 27th and it's still full of bugs unreal.read all the post's people are upset and they have every right to be.it's no wonder their losing costumers by the boat load.and yes i have one and not really happy.

You are talking about Shaw. Take a look at the DCX3400 thread. Shaw broke it with the latest firmware update.
2012-01-27, 09:52 PM
The most frustrating part is being kept in the dark with Shaw saying nothing. Anytime I ask their guys through the twitter support, or on the phone I keep getting the same type of response "the techs are working on it, and it should be soon". I'm a really new customer to the Gateway and although I am overall happy with it, I have to admit that not knowing anticipated release dates drives me nuts. Bug resolution should be priority #1 with a rapid rollout schedule for it (weekly or bi-weekly), and new features can be introduced even on a quarterly basis.
Others claim that Shaw reads these forums, but they sure play stupid when you make mention of this forum to them on the phone. I've been given responses such as 'Oh, I've never heard of digitalhome' or 'The techs are too busy to be bothered with forums', so I have no idea what to believe.
Shaw needs a bug tracker system for their client base to submit and monitor the status' of various bugs, this way the programmers at Shaw/Arris can work first hand with the real user base of the platform.

It was a Shaw tech that first led me to DHC back when I first joined as I had not heard of it then. As for a 'bug tracking' system, Shaw already has one but it literally does no good as unresolved bugs just get wiped off the list after an undisclosed amount of time. Take the Sound Drop outs one as a prime example. I posted a trouble ticket number that others having the same issue quoted for about 3 months until it suddenly disappeared from Shaw's system. The finally found it and told me it had been marked 'resolved' and I asked 'how can that be when the problem is still happening, system wide?' No answer was ever given and they still have that issue in the system.
Shaw is doing the best they can and ARRIS techs are in Calgary working closely with Shaw on getting this next 'big' update just right so we hopefully will have nothing to complain about when it is released. You can complain all you want as it can't hurt to stoke the fire but unless you have Mr. Shaw's personal phone number, you aren't going to get any action until it is good and ready.
When we say 'Shaw is reading', it's the managers and higher ups, not the CSRs as such. The turnover in CSRs alone is reason enough that they have never heard of DHC. Most of them wouldn't know how to set a clock on a VCR either, not that anyone needs to know how to do that any more anyway.

Just had my gateway and 2 portals installed today, including a telephone hookup. Everything went well with the tech. He even moved my cable modem for me and reconfigured my ethernet cables. My 1st impressions are as follows:
• Portal shows the time, not the channel, and there doesn't seem to be a way to change it. And, the numbers are small, and blue… hard to read.
• I haven't seen yet an easy way to distinguish between a single recording and a series recording (in Channel Guide or Grid Guide). You can see a list of series recordings, but you won't know which ones are missing until it's too late (If you accidentally set one up as “record once".) Am I missing something?
• The show descriptions are all over the place. Some with detailed descriptions, and some with nothing but the name. The old guide on the Motorola was far better for descriptions.
• The interface could use a redesign by Apple, and the remote seems to have a number of buttons that do the same thing. I suppose we'll get used to this.
• Grid guide is slow until it's rendered the page at least once before in the session.
• I can't record to my iMac through FireWire anymore. I have a feeling I won't miss that much.
• I've heard some mention a better picture with the Gateway. My experience is hard to quantify, because in my new configuration I changed from component to HDMI on both TVs as part of the install. The picture looks more… digital. I'm seeing more of the typical digital artifacts like moiré patterns and jaggies.
• Channels appear in reverse order compared to the 3400. Shouldn't take long too get used to. At least now “Up Channel" is up the page.
• I can imagine there might be a problem with keeping track of who watches and/or deletes recorded shows.
On the bright side:
• Hopefully with 6 tuners and 10 more HD channels, I won't have to resort to recording Repeats.
• I'm looking forward to them updating the software and adding network capabilities.
• Wife loves the watch anywhere aspect of it. And you know the saying… happy wife…
• Did I mention 6 tuners?

With regard to a new firmware/software update, I would be pleased to see one sooner rather than later.
I am a pretty patient guy and would rather have the gateway now, with it's flaws (assuming they will be fixed). I don't miss my old PVR's at all.
I got used to the new remotes and eventually programmed my Harmony remotes.
It is rather confusing to me why there are so many little faults with the system. I would have expected them to be sorted out before the product was on the market. Most of the things I buy work properly when I get them...
So essentially it comes down to this. I would like the equipment to run better. I will keep it regardless, but I really don't think my expectation is unrealistic.
Shaw has done a lot of things to make the situation more palatable, lowering and refunding the difference to early adopters of the equipment - they didn't have to do that... The "secret sale" while flawed was a bargain IMHO, and they have made some changes to how they price/package their programming.
Having said all this, I really want another update to make things better... It's not an unreasonable request/expectation...

This was going to be a rant of a posting, but I am calm now ;-)
So.... I had the last 3 episodes of Chuck recorded and was watching the second to last episode, before it ended I chose menu, then clear, instead of deleting the 2nd to last episode, it deletes the most recent one (the finale). At this point I start to curse, go to the nearest computer thinking I can watch the episode online at CTV's website, I find out that nope, CTV doesn't have Chuck available to watch online. Now I curse a blue streak ;-)
But, the light bulb moment happens, I still have it recording on my MythTV PVR, I watch the finaly and am happy.
I sit down to make this posting only to find out once again I can't replicate the problem. :-( This happened last time too.
I've posted about this issue before and Arris/Shaw, I'd like you to implement an undelete buffer, ie if you delete something, you've got 5 minutes say to undelete it.
2012-01-28, 10:50 PM
I would have to disagree with an undelete buffer option like that. If a recording is properly selected to be deleted and confirmed, it should just be deleted for good. Comparing this operation to computer file systems, it would be unrealistic to offer a time-based undelete buffer for each file that we select to delete from our Windows or Mac computers. I hate to say it, but we shouldn't assume the system to protect us against our own errors.
With this being said however, it is critical that the Gateway clearly displays what is about to be deleted to remove any chance of inadvertenly selecting the wrong file. And more importantly it certainly cant delete the wrong one. IE: if I select to delete Thursday's episode and it screws up by deleting Wednesdays or worse yet, the entire batch of scheduled episodes, this would not be good.
I have found the process of deleting not very intuitive. Someone else had mentioned that an Apple UI designer needs to take a run at the Gateway interface - in most cases, if the Arris designers would just sit back and look at the useability of the interface they must be able to do better with it.
2012-01-28, 11:28 PM
There really is no major reason you couldn't mark a show for deletion, which will be deleted at a certain point. It could start a timer...
2012-01-29, 12:07 AM
probc, if the ambiguity were removed from WHAT is being deleted, ie showing not just the show name but in addition the episode name/title/description, this would be pretty simple.
bringing the computer into the mix is not relevant in my opinion, computers have a delete buffer/recycle bin period, at least generally on the gui side of things. whether it's 5 minutes or permanently until that area is overwritten isn't really important to me. I'd rather they fix the ambiguity, but if they can't/won't then there should be a buffer, 5 minutes is a reasonable compromise after an "ooops" moment.
there are a lot of things about the gateway UI that are counter-intuitive, lack consistency or just plain don't make sense :-(
This ambiguity when deleting issue is something I noticed pretty much from day one and wondered "what if".... then it happened and I deleted the wrong episode of a show, this was several months after I first noticed there "could" be a problem with the deletion segment of the ui.
2012-01-29, 06:15 PM
Good point on the trash bin concept. I neglected to consider that one with respect to the computer comparison. The gateway should in fact have a trash bin for deleted episodes with a setting that allows for keeping the trashed items for a time period (7 days, 15 days, etc) or by total recordings count( 30/60/90, etc), or by size (250mb, 500mb, etc). Within the trashcan folder there should also be an Emtpy trash function. This would be an ideal situation all around then. If I accidentally delete something, and change my mind tommorow I can just go into the trash and restore it back.
2012-01-29, 06:38 PM
So I got my gateway and 2 portals today, running for about 2 hrs.
I'm trying to fast forward through a recording, but when I hit play at the point I want to start watching, the show just locks/pauses. Nothing happens. I just let it sit for 20 minutes to see if it would "catch up", the image on the screen changed once, but I was unable to get it to play. Ended up deleted the recording.
Known issue? Any work around?

Welcome to BETA testing for Shaw with the Gateway!
I have found that hit the Skip or FF buttons too quickly seems to cause this type of problem, and when it happens usually about 3 or 4 seconds later it will continue playing as normal.
Lot's of reading here in the forums about the Gateway.
2012-01-29, 11:59 PM
Grumpz; Please read through this and the original iS1 threads. You will find many answers to common questions. Also, the Gateway system takes a few days to 'stabilize' so take that time to read up and by the time you have worked through both threads, and any others here you might find interesting, your Gateway should have had time to 'settle' into the usual bugs we are dealing with now. 2 hours just isn't long enough to have any number of issues not crop up.

probc: yep.. we are full paying beta testers, actually Alpha testers. What we have is a total lack of commitment from Shaw corp and their tech team for a crappy system (which does potential but hasn't been shown) which is sold on mass to us gullible consumers.
They should have not rolled out this system full of bugs/glitches and lack of basic functionality that we should expect from these devices.
I now call every month to get my bill reduced as I can't accept what Shaw is dishing out to us.
If the box doesn't work exactly like they advertise then why should we pay full price?
Shaw is full of dreams and empty promises.
My whole system is still crapping out even after multiple tech visits and phone calls.
Shaw should have NOT released the Gateway system to the consumer how it is now. Its a money grab for Shaw.

I don't know what's going on tonight but both my live tv and any recordings tonight are freezing and jerking at random intervals. I've reset the Gateway but it still seems to be happening. Anyone else experiencing this? All the diagnostics check out good so I'm at a loss.
2012-01-30, 01:04 AM
new problem for me lately is a few channels will suddenly go black and say I am not subscribed, so I have to change the channel up or down and then back again, and then it will work for a certain amount of time.
new discovery channel HD, which is channel 249 here, does this quite often it seems.
anyone else getting this frequently?
