PaulB 2012-01-25, 05:18 PM A question about the Timeslots option for series recordings.
If it is set to "All", does the Gateway record every instance of the show it finds on the selected channel?
sibble-comp 2012-01-25, 07:50 PM Here's a odd one that just cropped up today.
I'd posted a while back about deleting an entire folder of shows and setting the number of episodes to keep. Basically more than 35 episodes and you can't delete the folder, but you can go into the episode retention settings and change it from unlimited to say 20 and even if you have more than 35 episodes, the gateway will then prune it down close to 20 and keep it that way.
Well, that didn't work on one show/folder today. The folder for "Accidentally on Purpose" had 108 shows, I went into the recording options and set it to 20, then tried 10, back to unlimited and then back to 20, to make a long story short, there's still 99 episodes in the folder.
Normally after making the change from unlimited to 20, when you exit the settings, it pops up on screen that it's scheduling the recording and you'll see a few episodes disappear from the list, but it typically will take 5-10 minutes to fully prune the folder depending on the number of recordings underway etc. I now tried to have it prune this folder about 10 times today over the past 4 hours but no joy. It's just not going down past 99. Also about half the time after changing the retention setting, nothing happened, there was no message that the settings were being updated.
Any ideas/suggestions.
I'm going to reboot the gateway when it next stops recording and see if that "encourages" it to complete the pruning.
For informational purposes my Recording Space is 95% full (internal + 1tb expander), though I've done this sort of pruning when that was at 97% full.
Tried this with another folder of 70 episodes and it worked without issue.
sibble-comp 2012-01-25, 07:52 PM PaulB, yup that's exactly right, ALL can rack up the episode count pretty quickly. I had Daily Planet setup that way and since Discovery broadcasts the same episode 3-4 times a day, I quickly had a folder with about 150 episodes.... with 4 of each....
PaulB 2012-01-25, 11:48 PM Thanks for the confirmation, sibble-comp.
"ALL" seems like a strange choice for the default. To me, defaulting to the timeslot for the show you selected in the guide (like the standard PVRs) seems like a more logical choice, with ALL, or other available timeslots, as alternatives.
Ev0lv3 2012-01-26, 04:54 AM So what was the update this morning? Noticed the portals turning themselves off and on?
rp_guy 2012-01-26, 06:00 AM So what was the update this morning? Noticed the portals turning themselves off and on?
Guide update; you can see that in the diagnostics screen
mmmbiscuits 2012-01-26, 07:47 AM Was asked if I wanted to update during a tennis match and I declined, now that it's finished just spent a while trying to figure out how to update it (i'm assuming just turning on+off) and trying to locate this "diagnostics screen" you speak of to see what was updated?
Sorry if a silly question, still brand new to gateway
Bobafart 2012-01-26, 09:39 AM One of my 2 portals consistently has a 5 second sync difference with respect to the audio and video -- looks like TV is dubbed no matter what channel. Even if playing off the HDD (PVR shows) the audio and video don't sync..power cycled a few times, no difference.
Anyone have a fix for this? Anyone else experience this? It only happens with 1 of my 2 portals
another question: is there a way to tell which channels you have and which channels you haven't subscribed to on the guide?
downbeat 2012-01-26, 09:44 AM I recall reading here there's a weekly Thursday update, regardless of whether there were actually any changes to be applied …
mmmbiscuits 2012-01-26, 08:07 PM bobafart have you talked to shaw? It could be a faulty portal perhaps?
Should call them and get a technician out if it's that consistant and only the one portal.
CowtownBiomed 2012-01-26, 09:24 PM My gateway is not recording series' properly.
Two of them are fine the other 2 record some other program.
Of course it is the wifes programs that are getting messed up too..
They seem to be programmed correctly but dont...
Jetranger 2012-01-26, 09:48 PM The guide updates daily. As downbeat points out, there is a weekly 'reset' and that is typically what you will see if it is on a Thursday morning. It happens whether there is any info to update or not and is supposed to aid in keeping the system running smoothly(that's debatable at this time).
roopster77 2012-01-27, 12:17 AM Any word on a "real" update? I notice my equipment is getting a little buggier, a little slower on startup and loading channels, also it will suddenly reset to the channel I am on when I am roaming through the guide...
probc 2012-01-27, 12:28 AM Reading through the previous posts here it seems like it has been many months since a real update, and the general word is that it's coming soon. Problem is, it's been 'coming soon' for way too long now and needs to actually arive.
Attention programmers at Shaw and/or Arris, release an update to fix all the known stuff and make us all happy again!
Jetranger 2012-01-27, 01:07 AM Patience, people. It's coming and, as soon as it does, you'll likely have either a new batch of problems to complain about or a list of issues that still haven't been addressed. Shaw is hoping that adding features in this next release will satisfy more than it disappoints but given the impatience here, I won't be surprised if the complaints start the same day the new code is released.
Shaw will deliver the code as soon as it is stable and secure. The last thing they want to do is put out a package that causes more problems than it solves or worse yet, creates big security issues for either them or us.
It should be showing up any day now(in all honesty, that could be tomorrow or a month from now, I really don't know other than it is in the final stages of testing) but if there is any kind of 'big delay' and I hear about it, you can rest assured I will post about it.

I don't understand what you are getting at,
If I set this device up to record a "series" on a specific channel, regardless of the guide update, it should still record that program when it is on.
Not some other random program..
The whole point of having the series recording set up the way it is, IMO, that when there are time or scheduling changes the device "should" automatically adjust its time to the new schedule..
In my wifes case (Glee and Grey's Anatomy) neither of these have had any changes to their schedules anyway...
IMHO its broken...
Im not sure about you, but I didnt buy into this to become a BETA tester for Shaw...
sibble-comp 2012-01-27, 12:14 PM CowtownBiomed, you are missing one very salient point. Shaw doesn't generate the listings content themselves, like most providers they get a customized feed from a 3rd party, typically Tribune Media. More often than not when the wrong program records in a timeslot, it's because the upstream data is incorrect. I'm not saying Shaw hasn't screwed up as you'll find several examples of that here in the forums in general, just that it's often not their fault.
That's also NOT to say that there aren't times I curse Shaw for releasing a half baked product, but in this case it's probably not their issue directly.
As a Mythtv user for the past 8-10 years or so I am quite familiar with this. Back in the day we used to scrape the listings from the website (tv guide I think), then Tribune media quashed that and the developers of MythTv worked out of a listings deal called Schedules Direct which we pay US$20 for. Even with a direct feed like this, there are still infrequent wrong items where it's listed as one show, you set it to record and it ends up being something quite different.

Your comment about the gateway automatically detecting changes to the listing and shifting it's recording times would be great but with incorrect data in the original listings feed is not realistic. These boxes are smart, but they aren't that smart. ;-)

If you actually go to the appropriate channel during the recording of the problem series shows, what program do you see? And what does the info button show at that time.
Does the info button show Grey's Anatomy while the show is playing but for example it's a sports show?
Where are you located and what timeslot do you have it set for? I'm in Vancouver and haven't had any issues with recording Grey's, I'd know about it pretty quick since it's one of my wife's fave shows.
Maybe it's a regional thing or maybe even a problem with the gateway you have not properly integrating updated listings as they come in.
CowtownBiomed 2012-01-27, 12:51 PM Thanks Sibble-comp, I think I understand what you are saying...
Unfortunately the wife deleted the programs right away after she found out it wasn't what she wanted, so I am kind of stuck trying to figure out what went wrong exactly.
I'm in Calgary (IE Cowtown)
I will have to monitor this myself, more closely.
Nixxo 2012-01-27, 12:56 PM also it will suddenly reset to the channel I am on when I am roaming through the guide...
I have this issue was well. I have noticed that it happens when the time hits the hour or half hour.
