Interesting, it doesn't seem any better or worse to me, pretty much same old, same old.

Sometimes it's faster for me, other times it's as slow or slower than it was before. Same thing goes for the grid guide but I don't think that was being addressed in this update.

The word is our biggest complaints are the ones they are working on first so the more people complaining about particular issues the better as they will get the push to be rectified first. Shaw is realizing the power of social media and forums like this so they are now paying close attention to what we want fixed first.

Meh, I'm not convinced, like I noted a few days ago, I'm skeptical at this point that this is ever going to be fully fixed up and working properly. There seems to be this seesaw effect taking place, one fix breaks something else.

Now if there was some kind of official suggestion/voting procedure for fixes and features, I'd feel more positive about the whole thing. This of course would require feedback from Shaw/Arris to indicate they were/are taking the suggestions/voting to heart and actually taking action based on it.

Open communications and all that. DHF is great and all that, I can't imagine what I'd do without it and in particular your contributions Jetranger. And if an even better/open communications LOOP could be started direct with Shaw/Arris, that'd be awesome.

Mods: Sorry, this is a bit of a rant but I believe it is relevant here. Please move or delete if necessary.

Way back in the summer, when a few of us (DHC members) attended the 'Sandbox' session on the Gateway at Shaw, there was plenty of talk about having a Shaw run 'forum' for actual Shaw Gateway owners. So far nothing seems to have come from it. It wouldn't surprise me if one of the reasons is because this forum is already providing Shaw with plenty of input and they only have to read rather than spend any more money or resources on basically duplicating what is here.

This is all speculation on my part. If Shaw were to provide a dedicated individual, one with suitable technical knowledge, to participate in this, and any other forums they see fit, then people here might feel like they were actually being heard. I believe Shaw has made efforts in the past to do something similar but the few Shaw people who have said it was their job to do this don't seem to have lasted very long. I think the only 'official' Shaw person left is 'ShawSean' but I might be wrong.

Shaw Champ does everything he does here on his own time and that's a sad state of affairs if you ask me. He's the most helpful Shaw employee that posts here and he isn't even getting paid to do it.

So, if Shaw can't even bother to put together even a small team to deal with customers in a 'forum' setting, they still have a lot to learn about social media and the voice of the people. Until it starts hurting their bottom line, hitting them in the wallet, they likely won't put any real effort into listening to us Gateway owners or anyone else for that matter.

Shaw has invested millions in this new Gateway system as their 'future' and yet it seems they have done little or no 'real world user' studies or consultations as there are just too many shortcomings that just wouldn't have been there if they had. Now they are forced to play catch up and try and provide the things we want 'after the fact' rather than having started with them and just delivered a fully usable product to start with. Instead, we are relegated to having to keep asking for 'upgrades' and improvements and just hope they someday get incorporated without causing more problems than they solve.

The new HD channels (for the Victoria BC area) didn't show up on my Portals. I didn't even realize they were coming out until I read a post on another forum. Two nights ago I used the online chat system with Shaw tech and it took them over 1.5 hours to fix the issue, well when I say fixed the channels showed up but only the channel number, no name and no guide data. I asked the tech right away about this and he said it would show up automatically in about 30 mins. I waited, nothing.

I waited until the next day, Nothing. So I rebooted my gateway and portals and still nothing. I have a regular Shaw PVR on my system and the channels show up and no issues at all. So its definitely another Gateway "glitch".

I will have to put in another tech support call into Shaw. (This will be my 8th call in 6 weeks).

Getting tired paying full price to be a beta tester.

I believe shaw has invested allot of money in this device and it's development. Just makes me wonder why an 'input' and 'exit' buttons are missing from the remote. Those seem pretty basic to me but no where to be found on the gateway controller.

So anyway of getting HD/SD from the portal/gateway system to my computer yet so I can watch TV on a monitor while I do my "work"?

You could use the RCA composite outputs to a video capture card but there might be HDCP issues.

Isn't HDCP only applicable to HDMI and DVI?

;-) funny you should ask

see my post here

as one option. HDCP will come into play if you want to use hdmi output from the portal to your pc. Note an hdmi INPUT card will set you back about $200-$300 and you'll still need to spend another $100 to $200+ for an HDCP stripper, HDCP Repeater etc

The blackmagic stuff looks pretty good, but pretty pricy for hdmi capture.

on the flip side you could also use a component video capture card like the Hauppauge Colossus which is basically the internal version of the HD-PVR (different chipset though with no linux support unlike the HD-PVR)

I'm using an RCA video to S-Video cable that my Hauppauge capture card came with to connect one of my portals to my computer, but it's SD only.

Had a simply brutal day with Shaw tech support today. I've discussed it elsewhere on this forum but in the end I've got all my channels back and the new Gateway is working well, as well as it can work anyway.

But lord, what a huge PITA. After the two (seriously Gateway-knowledge-limited) techs left my house apparently not giving a damn that most of my channels were missing, I called tech support and got a call back about an hour later. That guy sent a bunch of data to my Gateway and basically promised it would all be working in 20 minutes or so. Sounds so easy - wonder why it wasn't done that way in the first place?

I waited an hour but all the missing channels were still missing. Called again - this time no call back option. 2 hours of phone holding hell later I discovered the online chat option. less than a half hour after that I go a hold of guy who fixed everything in 30 seconds. Why hang up and tell me to wait 20 minutes for the data download when it only takes seconds to implement the proper fix?

So there's some techs at Shaw who know what they're doing but it takes a degree of luck to find them.

Susido, yes it does seem to take some luck to get the right tech to help out, unfortunately.

Noticed another thing when deleting groups of shows, not sure if this specifically related to other ongoing recordings or not, though I suspect it is.

Doctor Who was recording 1 episode and had 28 items in the folder, another show I was trying to remove, had something like 79 items.

I tried to delete the Doctor Who folder but nothing happened, it accepted the deletion request, but didn't do anything, I then went to the other folder and started deleting each episode manually until I could get it under 30 and delete the rest in 1 swoop. I got to 31 items and it just wouldn't delete anymore, I tried deleting random episodes which all appeared to be successful, but the number stayed at 31 even though I deleted at least 5 or 6 more episodes. I also at that point tried to delete the entire folder, same as with Doctor Who nothing happened.....

After about 5-10 minutes, this folder finally disappeared as did most of the items in the Doctor Who folder, all that was left was the currently recording show and the one previous to it.

It's odd that it wouldn't let you know it was in process of deleting stuff as it just let me delete over and over again without any errors, but also without any changes to the item counts in the folder.

How are folks dealing with dupes on the Daily Planet show on Discovery Channel?

This is not a gateway problem per se as I experienced this same behaviour with my MythTV box for a number of years which was probably listing related, however I am NOT experiencing this problem anymore, I think I ended setting it to record only at a certain time slot each day.

Actually just checked it's set to record as "Find One Daily" so instead of re-recording the same episode 3 or 4 times in 1 day, it only records a single instance.

I've now set the gateway to record from 4-5pm daily instead under the time slots option, but I am not seeing a "record once daily" option though I have a vague recollection of seeing such at one point.

Also a suggestion for Arris/Shaw (comparison with MythTV here), under Episode Limit, add a user defined amount, as the difference between 20 and unlimited is just too high. Some shows I'd like to keep 30 or 40 episodes.

You can see the kind of recording options we have in MythTV here

http://pdscc.com/troubleshooting2/Mythweb%20-%20Daily%20Planet%20recording%20options%20-%20Dec%2026-11.JPG

I'm hoping we see some more flexibility like this in both the gateway onscreen recording options and in the upcoming web/smartphone based scheduling....

What's also interesting to me from the deletion point of view is that after setting the show limit to 20 for Daily Planet, the gateway deleted about 113 episodes to get it down to 24 total currently so it obviously is capable of deleting a whole "schwack" of shows at one time, just not interactively.

Actually one feature I'd really like to see is the Time Stretch where you can playback the video either slower or faster than normal and it does pitch adjustment so things don't sound like the chipmunks....

Don't know what happened but sometime in the last 4 days half of my recorded programs disappeared. one day my space was 27% used, the next day it was 16%. Anyone else have this happen, most were 1st run shows that I wanted to watch!

Hang in there, they will probably show up again all on their own. It's a known issue that thankfully doesn't happen all that often. I believe it is to be addressed in the next full update.
