: CLOSED — Shaw Gateway: Code update to iS2 & iS2+ (See final post)
The IR port on the Arris portal should work exactly the same as the IR INPUT on the 6412 and 3400 products so that the portal can be hidden in a cabinet/rack/equipment room, etc.!!
It is ridiculous that it does not.
I have the remote IR receivers from my old Motorola/Pace boxes all stuck in place on my flat-screen bezels and they are currently useless.
No-one wants a "blaster" output port!!@#$%^&
jdawg 2011-10-13, 02:35 PM I still have no guide information on channel 232 still says TBA and channel 232.1; anyone else have guide information available on that channel?
Another problem, on my main portal the click sounds when I press the remote button doesn't work, I have it connect HDMI through my Denon AVR then to my HDTV - again anyone have this problem and a fix for it?
Thanks
Reboot 2011-10-13, 02:55 PM @jdawg, to set the click sounds go to Settings_Sound Effects, you can enable it from there :)
Channel 232.1 does not have the program information yet
the click sounds when I press the remote button doesn't workYou can turn that feature on/off in the portal settings. But on my system, it only works while setting up then quits! I have never been able to get the on setting to stick.
dtrain 2011-10-13, 03:15 PM Just another thing to add to the list of glitches ...
The portal sound effects DO NOT work in Dolby Digital Mode ... Only in Mono or Stereo modes.
We need to maintain a list of things for Arris/Shaw to work on ... This is one of them.
When the portal comes out of "Screensaver Mode" it reverts to Stereo mode for a few seconds ... then the clicks and other sound effects work for a second or two or five ... then it changes to Dolby Digital and the clicks go away.
I want sound effects AND Dolby 5.1, but Dolby surround is MORE important to me at this point, so I have to do without sound effects until a change is made (hopefully?!)
Also just like everyone else ... 232 has no program listings and says 232.1 (TBA) with no channel name or logo.
Other Channels in HD with no logo for me are 226 (YTVHD), Local CTV (210) and Local Global (211)
is this the same for everyone?
dtrain 2011-10-13, 04:28 PM To get a good look at the installer menu …
I am not sure if this has been posted before (I have looked and don’t see it anywhere) forgive me if it has.
I don’t advocate going in here and changing anything without knowing what you are doing … However, it does allow you to check the status of everything and lets you see your Gateway (Media Center) software version, and Portal (Media Player) software version as well as allows you to check the status of everything imaginable – Guide last updated – VOD Last updated – Provisioning - Your numerous ip addresses etc. - Your channel city and channel map. Most things are listed in ‘Diagnostics’ ... once in, you can check the sub menu to the right and update software etc.
To get there simply do the following:
• Press Menu
• Scroll right to settings … “The Gears”
• Hover over Channel List
• Press … Back, Next, Back, Next
• You’re in …
• Look around, especially in Diagnostics
Have fun!

Note from downbeat: I have been informed it is now 'safe' to use the installer menu after the April 2012 firmware update. It is no longer possible to cause damage to your system by using this interface.
Hugh's original disclaimer has been removed from this message.

jdawg 2011-10-13, 05:11 PM An issue also (with recording) is when you are recording shows back to back (i.e. NBC 7-8 & another recording 8-9) if you default settings are to record 1 min early and 2 mins late the second show will only show 3 mins recorded until the gateway is power cycled.
If you take off the early/late recording options this problem doesn't seem to happen as frequently.
Also, has anyone noticed that the quality of the picture/sound degrades dramatically if there are quite a few shows recording &/or recording with 3 portals watching live? It seems the gateway/shaw signal can't handle the bandwidth needed when really using the gateway to full potential.
Thanks
roopster77 2011-10-13, 06:30 PM AS with others, I still don't have channel info for 232... I also don't understand why there are no icons for CTV and a couple of other channels... Why don't they just put them in there? It can't be that difficult. Is this guide service one that is contracted by Shaw? I assume it is, but I just don't understand why it is not up to date...
Reboot 2011-10-13, 06:44 PM @all, the video/audio loss is really pissing me off! I have my video set to 1080i as suggested, still 5-20 second loss of signal. The video blacks out, then after a few seconds audio goes, then all comes back. This happens when watching live and on previously recorded programs. I did notice when watching live the link light went out for a few seconds on the Portal when the signal was lost.
Is this happening to anyone else? Shaw employees is this a known issue?
hdguy20060207 2011-10-13, 10:00 PM Cool to look at the installer menu. Lot's of techie type info but not a whole
lot of info. It did tell me the Gateway temp was 30 oC and that everything
seems up to date.
Thx.
Flash604 2011-10-13, 10:58 PM @Reboot - Blank without the "Lost signal" message is not something I've had nor heard anyone else complain about. I thus would say that's it's not a known issue. Have you checked with support?
dtrain 2011-10-13, 10:59 PM I had the exact problem you mentioned tonight ...
I was recording Parks and Rec, The Office, and Whitney all in a row on the same channel ... I usually do 1 min. early and 1 min. late ... Looks like I got all of Parks and Rec ... The 2 first minutes of The Office and the 3 last minutes of Whitney.
I wouldn't have checked the recordings right away if it wasn't for your post ... Thank goodness for the Time Shift NBC West ... I'll re-record later tonight.
This is REALLY going to be a problem that needs to be solved ...
I've had my Gateway / Portals for about 30 hours now and the fun "surprises" never seem to end!
Thanks again for the heads up!
Reboot 2011-10-14, 11:11 AM @flash604, not yet, I usually get a call every Sunday from 2nd level support, I will be reporting it then. I don't have 4 hours to wait on the phone:rolleyes:

dtrain, that is actually documented somewhere, my vague recollection is that it's in one of the Gateway manuals or is in the forums here.
As I think about this more, this is specific to using an HMDI cable as the sounds effects won't work in that case and I did see it in Shaw documentation, but so far no luck finding it.
Ahh yes, check out post 1221 here

Are you using HDMI or SPDIF?
dtrain 2011-10-14, 02:29 PM Yes, you are right ... I recall seeing that too but I couldn't remember where.
It also states it in the sound effects menu.
I have tried both Toslink SPDIF and HDMI ... don't matter ... no worky ...
I added it in my list of gripes mostly because I'd like it to work if there's a way.
(We put a man on the moon, but can't get sound effects through an HDMI cable?!)
sibble-comp 2011-10-14, 04:32 PM Hmm, contrary to my comments, sound effects work fine on my second portal connected via hdmi.
I just checked, it was set to stereo with sound effects muted, I un-muted them, and set audio output to dolby digital.
From my reading of the audio output page, it looks like sound effects will stop while watching a show outputting in dolby digital, but I assume they'd come back after the show is exited....
Hmm, is there an easy way to determine if the show is outputting in dolby digital, I don't see anything obvious when clicking the info button. As I don't have an amp on this second portal, not so easy to tell.
jdawg 2011-10-14, 05:02 PM Just thought I tune in here....my one TV the sound effects work (using MonsterCable HDMI) and on my main TV (same HDMI) the sound effects don't work - and both are set to Dolby Digital; so that can't be it - but I do wonder what the problem is...
roopster77 2011-10-15, 12:23 PM I get the sound effects on all units (3) and they are all on HDMI and set to Dolby Digital. The only one that didn't work for a while was the one that ran through my receiver, which started working last week for some reason...
nobandwidth 2011-10-15, 06:40 PM Have not seen this in the thread yet. Anyone know howw to put a parental lock on a recording?
Thanks
SnowGoose 2011-10-16, 02:24 AM @Flash604 - the issue Reboot reported was already described by me as well. When I experienced this issue, it was not accompanied by any "lost signal" type message.
