: OTA NETWORK Status: CBC/SRC DTV
Very puzzling info Crockett, since CBC Windsor already is streaming HD during childrens programming.
Marc - can you add any insight to this? Also, the audio stream in Windsor has NO center channel whatsoever. What is up with that? It was working perfectly after the initial transition.....
I believe Windsor (like most sites) cannot produce their local news in HD as presently equipped, which may explain Crocketts post. Windsor will see HD programs in HD.
Most programming in Windsor is coming from our old automation system right now (see post 81 (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showpost.php?p=1323815&postcount=81)) which means upconverted SD stereo programming. No center channel is normal. Left SD goes to Left HD and Right SD goes to Right HD. The full HD automation system is used during children's programming. Most of those shows are stereo = no center channel.
CBC has applied to convert CBVT-DT (Quebec, QC) from VHF 12 (av ERP 1.02 kW to UHF 25 (av ERP 126.1 kW) with a larger coverage area.
I don't get why there are never more technical details in CBC/SRC documentation like this. Great, they have maps, but those tell me nothing about the parameters of the directional pattern, the antenna height above ground, etc.
Incidentally, CBVT-DT already has a temporary low power UHF 25 transmitter on air, per the French forum.[/URL]
The TO showed up recently in the Industry Canada database. I created a coverage map accordingly.

That's some pretty amazing terrain blockage.

When CBC Windsor first transitioned and programming was in HD, their 6pm newscast was in full HD, including field camera shots. I suspect that will return when you get the HD stream restored!
tvlurker 2011-09-22, 02:51 PM and the application for full power on channel 25 CBVT Quebec City showed up today in the CRTC part 1 apps:https://services.crtc.gc.ca/pub/DocWebBroker/OpenDocument.aspx?AppNo=201112838
Deadline for comment is October 5, or half the normal time. See here (http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2011/lb110921.htm)for the reasons.
On 15 September 2011, the Corporation submitted an application requesting a technical amendment for its English-language television station CBVT-DT in Quebec City, Quebec. In light of the reception issues preventing Canadians from accessing the Corporation’s over-the-air digital television signal, the Commission varies the process and abbreviates the timelines with respect to the above noted application.

Note that in "CRTC-speak" the "Corporation" is the CBC and the "Commission" is the CRTC.
These terms arise out of wording in the Broadcasting Act which regulates both entities.
crockett18 2011-09-22, 07:28 PM I was refering to National news in HD, not local news based out of Windsor.
Funny thing about this whole mess, you would think that CBC would go on record about this and explain the problem.

Both will be HD in Windsor.

See post 81 or talk to Audience Relations.
DoubleDion 2011-09-25, 10:14 AM Hi Marc,
I was just wondering about CBC OTA in Halifax. Like others I have noticed children's shows in HD. However last night's Hockey Night in Canada was broadcast in SD. Is CBC Halifax going to be broadcasting Hockey Night in Canada in HD for future broadcasts?
Yes, once the automation issues are resolved all digital transmitters will get hockey in HD.
DoubleDion 2011-09-25, 10:22 AM wow thanks for the response! Any idea on time lines? Though I do appreciate the original response. Thanks.
It`s hard to guess with software... fixing something can cause problems in another area. Realistically, it will be a few weeks.
OTANUT 2011-09-25, 10:36 AM Bummer Marc - I soooo miss seeing CBC in HD!!!
Ken H 2011-09-25, 11:45 PM I was refering to National news in HD, not local news based out of Windsor.
National and local news from CBET has already been seen in HD, in the days just after the transition.
When you consider the magnitude of the transition for the CBC, it doesn't surprise me a few issues need to be dealt with. My advice is be patient. It will get resolved, sooner than later.

I'd rather have Marc keeping us informed. He's been a long term reliable source of all things CBC Digital TV.
In August 2011, cities across Canada like London (CBLN-TV) and Kitchener/Waterloo (CBLN-TV-1), did not get their OTA transmitters upgraded to digital. Instead, the CBC got the CRTC to approve London's CBLN channel change from RF40 to RF23, and decrease its ERP.
Today on newswire.ca, I found two announcements that the CBC will introduce new radio and internet services for London (http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/September2011/26/c6354.html) and Kitchener/Waterloo (http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/September2011/26/c6357.html), which is part of the CBC's five-year strategic plan Everyone, Every Way.
According to the article, the CBC wants to expand radio services starting in the fall 2012. This will probably coincide with the shutdown of CBLN and other transmitters, and no switch to digital OTA. :(
London's mayor, Joe Fontana, was quoted "We are thrilled with the news of increased local CBC presence here in London". Joe sent a complaint to the CBC, along with other mayors, MPPs, and MPs from the London & area this past spring/summer about CBLN and other transmitters. I guess the CBC will shutdown these rebroadcasters of the CBLT signal. :(
micah 2011-09-26, 12:38 PM AFAIK, the CBC has said they are just going to apply for another extension. Also, I believe council and _some_ MPs are trying to work toward a long term digial solution. But, in the end its up to the CBC. Also, dont forget that their license is up for renewal in the near future, so we have that opportunity as well.
rmchahn 2011-09-26, 01:54 PM If it took the CBC this long to realize the need for radio service in London and K-W, how long do you suppose it will be before they see the need for an OTA digital transmitter in these communities?
Jase88 2011-09-26, 02:03 PM Let's keep the discussion focused on CBC's post-transition status with regards to OTA TV. The radio announcement from the CBC can be discussed here (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=146004).
alebowgm 2011-09-26, 04:31 PM I can confirm that CBET is showing the OTT-WPG (Kraft Hockeyville) game 4:3 OTA right now and not 16:9. I got 4 nice black bars all around my screen right now :(
LONSat 2011-09-26, 04:38 PM I have noticed on Shaw Direct that the CBC HD feed every so often will blink to a black screen. None of my other HD channels do this and I would say it was around the same time as some of these changes. The sound is continuous as far as I remember just the picture goes blank for half a second.
The program guide for CBC English stations should be online no later than Monday.
