I noticed the news on CBET was broadcast OTA in upconverted 16:9 yesterday, so that was good news.

Right now morning cartoons are also 16:9.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrgh...2 months after transition and still no Canadian HD for me (CBC & TVO is all I get). This is torture how long it's dragging out.
?

Torture would be knowing they were always going to be in analog or SD. Further, you can get CBC HD now in the mornings and afternoons.

You need to relax.

I checked it again last night; primetime & late light were still SD. Children's programming has been HD all along. Afternoon programming went HD last Monday 10/24/11.

Can anyone confirm EPG on any CBC/SRC stations?
PSIP is working for station ID but not for program or guide info.

Agreed! Patience, young grasshopper. At least you don't pay taxes to support the CBC, like me and other members of this board....

OTANUT ,please feel free to ask for results.

There seems to be alot of complacency after 2 months past a start date .We had the luxury of watching this occur in the US on a much larger scale ,before Canada moved into this realm .At this point we can only wait for this to be debugged week by week .

Complacency? Hardly.

They have publicly stated on this forum the problem is automation software and they are working on it every day. Since the transition, they have moved forward by first using the Atlantic stations for testing two weeks ago, and last Monday adding afternoon HD. This is concrete progress.

After directly experiencing the issues with the American networks, I can tell you it's a lot more complicated than it might seem.

If it works part of the day, why can't it be in HD all day?

I also say, better than analog.

crockett18, I suspct it has to do with the insertion of local news between 5 and 6:30, and insertion of local commercial spots during the evening.

Don't forget that master control for all CBC englis stations is in Toronto, and master control for all SRC frech stations is in Montreal. Transmitters without direct fibre links need to get their feed from Toronto somehow, and if the new HD satellite system isn't working right, then they have to fall back on SD.

Don't see it posted anywhere yet - CBKT-DT (Regina) is in full 16:9 HD tonight. Maybe a sign that things are lookin' up! :D

It doesn't work without problems and we can only tackle so much at once. Errors like missing content may not be evident to the viewer. Progress is being made and the schedule is expanding.

I figure this is more a technical problem than reception.

Going by the volume indicator on our new Samsung TV; when scanning through the 7 available channels (only CBRFT remains analog), the sound level is at least double on SRC what the others are, (say 15 on a scale of 100, whereas the digitals are equal audible when volume bumped up 45). Neighbours call police at 100, heh heh.

Scares the heck out of us when surfing through the channels and land on 16.

Is a simple adjustment of transmission equipment at the tower location all that is required ?

No. It is not a simple adjustment, nor is it done at the transmitter (in the DTV world). Loudness is adjusted at the Production end and to a lesser degree in Master Control.

We are in the middle of a study to get a handle on loudness on both CBC and SRC. It's a huge issue and a tough nut to crack. We want to let producers take advantage of the wide dynamic range digital offers, but nobody likes being knocked to the floor by an obnoxious commercial.

Overcompensating will make the audio level pump up and down excessively trying to clamp down the loudness and making quiet scenes unnaturally loud.

It's difficult to even measure loudness. VU meters don't cut it at all.
Change is coming, but it will take time.

I find CBC Halifax to look great but be consistently quiet. Still no EPG but I'm willing to wait on it. Thanks for your keeping us in the loop and working with our issues.

Well, I don't wanna get my hopes up too much, as we've seen changes in plans often...but I must admit I'm pretty darn excited about full time HD coming on Monday!!!
