i've noticed a box reading loading please wait, and my unit is locked up while this happens (can't change channels ect) then "scheduling" popping up in the right hand corner of my screen a lot, it fills with blue after about a minute and dissapears, this has popped up 3 times in the last hour!
anyone else notice this?

Yes! I was actually just going to post about that! I'm not scheduling anything when the scheduling bar comes up. It just comes up and schedules some mystery thing. Then I also got a couple of times that rectangular message across the screen that says "Loading. Please wait a moment..." or something similar. The one you also wrote about. It's the same one that comes up when you're loading the search, for example. Except I'm not loading anything. It just appears for about a minute then disappears. And, as you indicated, you have to wait for it to finish.

For me, the only thing going on is that I'm recording U.S. Open coverage and sometimes watching it while it's still recording and sometimes watching something directly from the other tuner. Are you doing something similar?

Do you think maybe the 630 always did these things, but in the background?

I have the same scheduling bar pop up for no reason.

On another note, as posted before, if you do a factory reset it resolves the slow guide issue brought on by the download of this new firmware. Thanks for the tip! It is a shame that needs to be done at all.

possible reason: as the guide data downloads the scheduler updates, maybe this happened in the background prior to this update and now we get a visual prompt.

Just hypothesizing :)

So... what's the difference between 'record this program' and 'smart record this program'. Apparently I am not smart enough to know the difference! lol

With the results posted by Shaw Directs subscription beta testers, there appears to be less reason to upgrade hardware from the older 530PVRs to the 630 PVR.

Although the older 530PVR's firmware may have been criticized by consumers, the older 530's picture + stability benefits far outweigh Motorolla's 630 replacement + firmware.

630 Consumer complaints of pixelization despite ample signal gain should be PRIOIRIZED & resolved ASAP before further enhancements are introduced. Customer service is one thing. Maintaining consumer confidence with their product is essential. Ignoring significant issues posted on this site, which are indicative of the frustration experienced by many with newer hardware, can only contribute to erroding SD's subscription base as others migrate elsewhere.

A satisfied client will have less reson to consider today's entertainment alternatives!

One of the major criticism of Shaw with the 505/530 firmware was that they tried to do too much at once and thus failed to do anything, leading to abandoning the whole idea. I never owned a 530 but I have four 505s to compare picture, signal and pixelization issues with a 630.

Frankly, issues with my 630 are few. With 6.22, I agree the guide is a tad sluggish. Perhaps they had to sacrifice this response time in favor of other guide additions. But I like the logos, including ones marked "free preview" as that was always a problem when channels appeared and then disappeared.

If 6.22 had been a couple of days earlier to my box, I might have not have had problems scheduling and rescheduling timers when Nascar suspended the last race by two days. I had to record two+ TSN SportsCentres in lieu of a possible updated guide.

6.22 represents baby steps. Isn't that what we all wanted with the 500 series?

My guide is still ridiculously slow. The channel names pop up but the shows take and added second. Does a factory reset delete the PVR list?

The 630 situation reminds me of the first few years with the Bell 92xx series. Lucky me, I get to experience the frustration twice.

From that experience I learned a few things. One is that new firmware usually introduces new bugs along with new features. Another is that new firmware often takes time to "settle." I have also learned the following:
1. It won't fix bad recordings so any done before the update will still have dropouts and skips.
2. It often won't fix corrupted system settings so they may need to be cleared and redone.
3. When new firmware tries to fix things, like disk and EPROM corruption, settings, timers and recordings can sometimes get lost.

In order to get rid of old problems it is often necessary to clear out bad EPROM and disk data. Try the following, in order, until problems clear up:
1. Front panel reset. Always a good idea when firmware is upgraded.
2. Reset menu options to factory defaults. Not sure if this is an option with the 630 but it would be under the regular menus. (Not the hidden menu factory reset.)
3. Unplug the receiver for a few minutes to reinitialize the hardware.
4. If all else fails, do a full factory reset to clear all memory and settings back to factory defaults. (Menu-4-9-8-8)
5. It may also be necessary to reformat the hard drive (and lose all recordings.) So far, I've seen no indication of that the 630 requires this.

So... what's the difference between 'record this program' and 'smart record this program'.

record this program - record this program at this time slot
smart record this program - record this program at the first available time slot

I have not noticed much difference with 6.22. Although I was never getting bugs: pixellating, etc. that others have reported here. I've had my 630 for a year now.

I do notice the guide being a bit sluggish after the firmware upgrade, but nothing really dramatic.

@yoshi ...I have both a stable 630 and a stable 530 in the house, and get nothing but complaints if I 'force' one of my kids to use the 530. The 630 is head and shoulders above the 530 in all ways.

A factory reset gives you the choice of deleting hard drive contents or not....

You will lose timers you have set, however.
