charettepa 2011-08-18, 12:08 AM was just watching global news
they had the head person of global wich is sh@w
they said that people in locations that cant get the channel might qualify for free shaw sat-tv service of the 4 major canadian nets
GerryB 2011-08-18, 12:38 AM >>Are you using this as your only antenna or just for Global?
No it is just for Global. There's no way I could pick up all the Watertown channels every night with that thing. I have a 4-bay UHF clone that I rely on with my homemade preamp to get all the long distance stuff. Since Im on the 12th floor it means I get Watertown (ABC, Fox, CW, PBS) every night so far this summer except a few nights.

they said that people in locations that cant get the channel might qualify for free shaw sat-tv service of the 4 major canadian netsThat's really odd that they are suggesting free satellite as an option instead of increasing the power. I wonder how long they will offer it for free? It sounds like it's just to get you in the door. The real solution would be to increase Global's transmission power so people can get it.
GeoStar 2011-08-18, 08:23 AM I have a vip 302 on the ground on a tripod in my backyard pointed at Cf. This gives me a medium strength analog signal for 6 Global. This runs thru a 7778 pre amp that feeds into a kt200 pre amp and then into a distro amp.
The signal is a lot better than my olde rabbit ear and more stable but still kinda fuzzy. Oh how nice it would be on the roof but the 8bay is hogging that space.
I find that 6 is the problem child of all the other channels , I even get the 6 pbs stations more clearly these days from 100 miles away , thou they are digital
I tell my neighbours that I'm using the vip302 as a green energy saver for drying the laundry :D
Sheaw just wants your money , er like bhell and robgers :S
they use ota as a teaser
charettepa 2011-08-18, 08:41 AM good to hear about the 302
id really like the smallest possible vhf lo though
just for channel 6
the 91xg is pretty big to start off with
my vhf hi should pick up 9 and 13 no problem
As expected the CRTC's reply to a complaint about Global TV's new weak digital broadcast is a boilerplate link to: http://digitaltv.gc.ca/ (There you go, problem solved...) I'd follow up, but I fully expect they will respond with another banal answer... Unfortunately I don't have the patience to deal with this; I guess I don't care enough about getting Global TV.
If anyone does: CRTC: How to make a broadcasting complaint (http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/INFO_SHT/G8.htm)
Dave Loudin 2011-08-18, 10:02 AM I posted something similar in the CHCH thread...
The CRTC used the same allocation model as the FCC. The assumptions for the receive environment for VHF in that model have proved to be wrong. My suggestion to help move the chance of improvements along quickly is to provide stations with the data they will need to petition for more power:
your receive antenna model and location
feed system to your receiver
description of digital reception
accurate description of previous analog reception
Nothing will change until a clearer picture of how far reality is from predictions is obtained. General comments of dissatisfaction will not help determine what the real scope of the problem is.
flavoie 2011-08-18, 10:30 AM charettepa, the smallest possible antenna with the highest gain possible for channel 6 would be a single cut yagi made for channel 6.
flavoie 2011-08-18, 10:54 AM there's actually threads that lay out dimensions of DIY single cut antennas if you'd like a model to follow. You could purchase them too if you found an off-the-shelf model. Wade/Delhi made some.

stampeder 2011-08-18, 12:40 PM Also for DIY'ers there is an existing parts thread that I've moved some posts into:

flavoie 2011-08-18, 03:55 PM I called the Global Toronto 416-446-5311 number which charettepa had provided and asked to be transferred to engineering. They logged my complaint with my full address, antenna location (attic) and antenna type (Delhi VIP-302SR) and took my email down.
The person mentioned they are logging all the complaints coming in.
I had to do this since the first person who promised to call back never did.
charettepa 2011-08-18, 04:22 PM good to see you called back
i have called again
they have again told me someone would call back
but still nothing
In ottawa, well carp actually, I get a partial lock but that's all.
GeoStar 2011-08-18, 07:30 PM Wow just tuned in to 6-1 its DIGITAL gorgeous tv with a super strong signal:D:D
Im in global heaven
PanaMark 2011-08-18, 07:41 PM GeoStar,
how far are you from transmitter. I also have a VIP302SR and I am 70 Km`s from Paris transmitter.I just want to compare apples with apples.
GeoStar 2011-08-18, 08:10 PM I go sking at camp fortune sometimes , oh yea
and its not too far away about 35 kilometers
Ive been getting consistent excellent quality digital picture reception even in the worst storms for local channels this summer with my setup.
The pbs channels are very weather radr restricted.
PanaMark 2011-08-18, 08:12 PM so lets say, you are getting full reception at 35 km`s. hmmm makes me wonder if I will get a signal after all the noise in the air, being channel 6 and all.
Thanks that helped.
roger1818 2011-08-18, 09:04 PM I bought a cheap RCA distribution amp (ya I know its 5.5dB NF is lousy, but it was the easiest thing to buy and I can return it) and connected it to my 5Y6S with an FM trap a couple days ago. Now Global is much more reliable. Not perfect, but it works most of the time. Thinking I should try a CM-7777 or maybe even a Kitstech to see if that makes it even better.
flavoie 2011-08-18, 09:18 PM Roger if you can't get something reliable in the attic with a single cut in the attic we're all doomed in Ottawa ! Did you call them ? I suggest you do...
Thanks for your report
Okay, I'm willing to buy a few things to get Global.
So far I have a CM4228 on my roof about 30' off the ground. I'm running about 75' of coax to the TV (not much choice on that unfortunately).
Here is my TV Fool.
http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3d9e74f8f8f5a118
I get everything I should be getting perfectly (4.1,9.1,20.1,27.1,24.1,17.1) Just that darn 6.1 grrr Signal should be strong even...
Was thinking I should buy this? Mount it on the roof above the CM4228: Antennacraft-y5-26
Then how to do I connect it so I get all the channels over the same coax?
Should I get a CM7777?
Thanks!
