: CHCH Hamilton DTV Transition - Aug. 15, 2011 - update in Post #462
AJB_01 2011-08-22, 12:15 PM Just a quick update. CHCH has been perfect without any issues since my first post about getting it after doing the re-scan. As for the CM4228, analog channels from 9 and above come in about as well as they did with the old CM VHF/UHF monster. Analog 5 comes in but extremely snowy.
jgconnor 2011-08-22, 12:18 PM Digital_Frank, keep in mind that that chart shows the old 4221 not the 4221HD that is for sale now.
I'm definitely getting CHCH on RF11, but then I'm so close to the transmitter that I'd have to do a lot of work to NOT get it. The real test will be CTV on RF9. If I get it, I get it. If I don't I'm am not going to put any effort in to receiving it. It's not that important and they obviously don't care.
arrow201 2011-08-22, 12:21 PM Has anyone in Brampton been able to get CHCH digital since they stopped transmitting on UHF RF18.1 and started digital transmission on VHF RF11?
I was receiving their UHF at a consistent 80-90% but not a flicker on the VHF and don't know whether it is an antenna or receiver issue.
Yes, i'm in Brampton at 410 / Bovaird and i'm getting CHCH. I have an attic install,
DB8 / CM7777. I'm now getting between 54%-58% since the transistion. So far it has
been solid.
Digital_Frank 2011-08-22, 02:02 PM @ arrow201 where is your DB-8 pointed?
Digital_Frank 2011-08-22, 11:48 PM Interesting.... Yesterday 0 db snr, all day today 13-15 db snr and 1/10 bars.
I wonder if tropo or something was changed?
ota_canuck 2011-08-22, 11:54 PM 13-15 db is barely floundering upon the dropoff cliff. You are deep, deep fringe. For better VHF reception, try turning the back of the 4221 antenna toward Hamilton.
Digital_Frank 2011-08-23, 01:00 AM Actually I have a DB-8 and will wait until Sept before I change anything. Who knows how things may unfold...
Marbles_00 2011-08-23, 10:01 AM People who are having trouble in getting CH since the transition...well it may not be because of the reduced ERP. Another member here, who uses MediaPortal like me on his HTPC, started a bug report in the MediaPortal forums. One of the developers reports that CH is using a wrong value PMT PID assignment in relation to the ATSC protocol. I'm wondering if by using this incorrect assignment, some tuners are reporting a non-valid signal, hence not picking up the channel.
Now, I'm not saying that their dismal ERP levels are not a cause for concern. I'm just saying that there could possibly be something else here at play.
I will keep you informed should the CH engineers get back to me about this concern.
AJB_01 2011-08-23, 11:27 AM With all the people posting numbers in this forum I wondered if my Sony Bravia II could do the same. I searched the 'Net and found a few hints. On mine it comes under Menu-->User Support-->Diagnostics. You get a "bar" meter and a load of information on the left of your screen. With the CM4228 pointing due North is shows the following for CHCH:
Errors - 0
SNR (dB) - 31.69
IF-AGC (%) - 45
Bar Meter - 10/10 (98%)
Location is central St. Kitts near the QEW.
Hi Marbles,
Thanks for your observations. CTV analog 9 is currently a blow torch so I am expecting I will still get it DTV post transition....
I have a VHF/UHF Terk indoor combi antenna.
It works fine for VHF analog 5,9,11 broadcasts.
It also works fine for channel 10 and 13 DTV broadcasts whenever there is tropo from Rochester (solidly consistent with the times when I get Rochester UHF transmissions.) ...
Just to update for the CHCH engineers if they are reading this.
Currently, no doubt due to tropo conditions, I am receiving VHF channels
7 Buffalo (67-1,2,3,4)
10 Rochester (10.1,2)
13 Rochester (13.1,2)
If the signal is there my antenna picks it up.
There is no CHCH 11 digital signal here in the east end of Scarborough, not even when tropo is bringing VHF from Buffalo in.
Just to reiterate VHF analog CHCH 11 came in fairly strong (some snow), and the digital CHCH UHF 18 came in beautifully.
Tom.F.1 2011-08-23, 12:04 PM Hi Obed,
I'm getting 11.1 here is Ajax, so the signal must be passing thru scarborough to get here :)
The first couple days after they switched, it was really low, 2 out of 10 bars with breakups. But from the 18th on, I've been pretty solid 5 bars on both my samsungs.
My big complaint about ch is thier audio is about 6 dB higher than everone elses?
P.S. back in the old days ;) the 11 analog signal here was fuzzy, maybe somepeople could watch it if they really wanted to see that program, but i couldn't watch it. And 18 digital was a little higher than 11 is, as it should be with a UHF antenna.
chengbin 2011-08-23, 01:14 PM What channel is CHCH on now? There is nothing on 18 or 11. I used to be able to get CHCH on 18 with a 4221HD intermittently (with 1/3 of the signal bar), but now I have 0 signal.
tvlurker 2011-08-23, 01:17 PM I would think you would need to do a complete rescan to pickup 11.1 on 11 instead of 18.
ota_canuck 2011-08-23, 01:18 PM What channel is CHCH on now? There is nothing on 18 or 11. I used to be able to get CHCH on 18 with a 4221HD intermittently (with 1/3 of the signal bar), but now I have 0 signal.
You will likely have to do a complete rescan to get CHCH digital broadcast on 11RF.
Hi Tom,
Good to hear your signal has improved. I have noted a couple of others on here have managed to pick up CHCH from further afield. I assume you have an exterior roof or tower mounted vhf specific antenna?
I happily accept your correction. For clarity, my reference to no signal was meant in the context of my indoor combo Terk antenna's reception, which effectively has no reception, not even the faintest glimmer.
dh1s13 2011-08-23, 03:11 PM Hi Obed
I am not too far from you,i am at Sheppard and Meadowvale, with my CM 4228 HD FACING southwest on the side of my townhouse.I was able to get CHCH on didital 18rf but since they swith to rf11 VHF not a wisper on my LG Plasma regardless of how many times i rescanned so i give up for now and will wait til Sep 1 to make any drastcic changes.:(
I used to have CHCH 98% of the time when it was on ch 18. Unfortunatelly, now it is completely gone, no signal on ch 11 rescan or no rescan. Oh well, if its not coming back, I'll be able to adjust my antenna more towards Batavia.
able61 2011-08-23, 03:14 PM Whatching chch xplaining to viewers that if u cannot recieve chch try to rescan. I wonder how people are recieving this message if they cant get chch tobegin with?
doomy 2011-08-23, 03:24 PM I know it doesn't make much since, but maybe they think their viewers are so desperate to watch them that these viewers are all going to their friends' houses.
arrow201 2011-08-23, 03:50 PM @ arrow201 where is your DB-8 pointed?
My DB8 is pointed just west of the CN Tower, and just east enough so i _don't_ get
26.1 (WNYB), this was the best compromise for me to get everything i want. Even
though an attic install is not ideal with all kinds of losses, ...maybe there's enough
reflections caused in the attic to bring in CHCH ? ...i really don't know, just that i've
never had a problem with it. At 54%-58%, it's weaker then before, but so far it's solid.
Will see what happens during bad weather.
