: CHCH Hamilton DTV Transition - Aug. 15, 2011 - update in Post #462
majortom 2011-08-18, 12:02 AM Sweet...:)
Yeah I'm not hip to where to search for Canadian stuff either...
All greek to me...I can just about stumble my way through the FCC's ULS as it is..
tvlurker 2011-08-18, 12:06 AM TVFool.com uses the Industry Canada database for Canadian TV stations, so its data is largely correct. It has Longley-Rice plots, too.
majortom 2011-08-18, 12:11 AM good point...
Will use that, compare the old analog...to the post

Yes, but not for coverage contours. Those come straight from the FCC. I don't think they even have Canadian coverage contours.
Their L-R plots, yes, are based on Industry Canada. Of course, at the moment, I can only find a plot for the channel 18 signal, not the new channel 11 signal.

I don't have the analog plots, sorry. Nothing on the FCC site either.
Also, this may or may not spoil the surprise I'm currently working on, but here's something a bit more accurate for CHCH: http://www.rabbitears.info/contour.php?appid=1282749&map=Y

The blue line is 100 feet from my house, and there's no colour over it. Nice clear view of my roof. :(
majortom 2011-08-18, 12:43 AM CHCH_VHF11_ANA_DIG (http://www.wuala.com/whosurbud/Documents/TsReaderDumps/CHCH_VHF11_ANA_DIG.ppt/) comparison in .ppt so ya can easily flip back and forth between the old ANA VHF 11, and the new DIG VHF 11, as seen from TVFOOL.
Edit: Added third slide showing Trip's experimental coverage contours for the post transition CHCH VHF 11

Hmmm...did somebody get Fortran working? :-)
nakedgord 2011-08-18, 02:50 AM Origionally posted by MajorTom:
Post a question in the preamp thread then. Provide all ur system details there including ur tvfool. Someone will respond with advice...
Thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to let this shake out till the full turn over and see if things improve with the analog signals disappearing and/or see if CFTO still comes in for some strange reason.
HDTV101 2011-08-18, 05:01 AM I always believed in ... "If it ain't broke don't fix it"
Channel 18 was working great... now they just made a mess of their digital broadcast... Most people have UHF antennas, like myself, and now I can't even get CHCH because my dat-75 preamp filters out VHF ...
El Gran Chico 2011-08-18, 06:57 AM Now CHCH Program guide data is gone. :(
obe67 2011-08-18, 07:30 AM Ok folks so after changing the location of my uhf and new vhf I am getting chch at about 83% and this morning in the Upper Beaches of East Toronto it was crystal clear.
NOW,, just for those of you who can't get the signal. The first thing that I saw this morning was an announcement that they are changing over to digital.. AND some of you may lose your signal SO... "please contact your cable, satellite or phone company about getting a subscription"... then at the very end as a kind of half assed effort at the truth alternatively (i.e. don't do it) you may need to change you antenna setup etc.. Lets not be cute and try to pretend that they don't understand, misunderstood ... Everything is crystal clear here with their management. Anyways all I can say to rogers and bell is In your face!!! and by the way WBBZ came in crystal clear this morning and I had a record 42 digital channels scanned.
Sorry this might be put in the rant section but after the money and hard work it was insulting to see that CHCH announcement. As for the CRTC I believe there is a movement to get it abolished or seriously changed, I suggest we add to the ranks of this group which is already quite large after the CRTC tried to get UBB internet billing forced upon us that would have further increased the profits of the big two Canadian corporate communism (I like that term :) ) monopolies.
cheers
99gecko 2011-08-18, 07:52 AM There's been nothing for me here in Markham using a CM4221. I used to get RF18-1 and RF11 analogue reliably. I'll wait for a few weeks into September to see what happens with CFTO, before deciding on whether to change my set-up or not.
Disappointing
99gecko 2011-08-18, 07:58 AM If anyone feels like it, the wikipedia entry on CHCH-TV needs updating. I don't think I could provide a neutral edit at this time. :(
[EDIT: I made an update, but it will need updating again by the end of the month]
vap57 2011-08-18, 07:59 AM I rescanned this morning. I am receiving CHCH again, but audio cuts in and out ever15-20 seconds and so does the picture. Signal strength is between 43-48. I NEVER had an issue receiving the station. Still not satisfied.
In more news, when I rescanned, I lost CFTO.
We have to make NOISE NOISE NOISE. What can I do to help?
vap57 2011-08-18, 08:04 AM I can't access their website. "Database Error: Unable to connect to the database:Could not connect to MySQL". Don't know what that means, but could it possibly be linked to what has happened since they transitioned?
mr weather 2011-08-18, 08:13 AM Does your "antenna (UHF)" receive the VHF hi band? So far the 4228 is doing the job for me, that is CHCH.
If your profile location is correct, you and I are in the same city which is within the 60 dBu contour. That is a decent signal. I receive it too without any issues using an "advertised" UHF antenna: Winegard PR-8800.
bladeduguay 2011-08-18, 08:15 AM I rescanned ALL my channels and I now get CHCH just like before, same strength. Some one on here said that if you only rescan for digital channels, you will not pick up CHCH, because it is on VHF.... So I rescanned and got it.
4221HD 30ft Brampton Sony Bravia. And I'm still getting TCT. Oh well.;)
vap57 2011-08-18, 08:21 AM ...."Some one on here said that if you only rescan for digital channels, you will not pick up CHCH, because it is on VHF."
Can someone clarify that statement for me? Does it mean to scan analogue and digital signals?
Biggy 2011-08-18, 08:24 AM Vap,
Maybe I can help you we live so close send message to me with your phone #, I'm going out town today but should be back later this evening.
bladeduguay 2011-08-18, 08:28 AM "Does it mean to scan analogue and digital signals?"
Yes that is what I did and everything is working just like before.
