: CHCH Hamilton DTV Transition - Aug. 15, 2011 - update in Post #462
ota_canuck 2011-08-17, 09:41 PM Biggy,
I think you are confusing the values of digital and analog erp differences with UHF and VHF erp differences.
Broadcasting digital requiring a lower transmiter wattage than what the analog broadcast required is expected, but they should be at 60kw not 6kw. They went from 60kw digital power on UHF to only 6kw digital of VHF.
The CHCH Hamilton analog VHF erp on 11RF was 325kw and now they have only 6kw erp on the same 11RF? As a fox engineer stated in another thread, no station worth their salt in the broadcast industry should have less than 50kw on VHF.
Humbar 2011-08-17, 09:47 PM There are other allocations they could use if they choose to apply for it. RF 35, already on their tower would work when CITS vacates it. They should vacate VHF altogether, too many noise issues.
majortom 2011-08-17, 10:20 PM did anyone else notice Chantal works in "client services" ?
hmmm, who's the client?
x4mer 2011-08-17, 10:33 PM I'm having a weird one with CH. No problems locking it on both my Samsung TV's, but my media computers (both have an HVR-1250) aren't locking on to it via MediaPortal. I have TSReader on one machine and that is showing a good solid signal, so I'm pretty convinced MediaPortal doesn't like VHF for some reason...most likely in my setup.
Same problem, as mentioned in post #122. I'm using 2250 cards with MP though.
ota_canuck 2011-08-17, 10:33 PM did anyone else notice Chantal works in "client services" ?
hmmm, who's the client?
I had some conversations with a few of their advertiser client's today about the loss of the CHCH contour area coverage. These clients were not aware, nor pleased to hear about the loss of viewers that see their ads. Maybe this is just a damage control letter coming from client services.
Hmmm, and they didn't send any reply to me?
x4mer 2011-08-17, 10:37 PM This morning CHCH is finally coming in here in Stouffville off my UHF antenna. It's weak but working ok. I'm guessing this is just a tropo event, since I'm also recieving WEAO, not sure where that ones from. I guess i'll need a VHF Hi antenna aimed at Hamilton to get more reliable reception.
As I mentioned in post #122, I'm using a VHF antenna (Y5-7-13), and even aimed east of south (170') CHCH is rock solid.
x4mer 2011-08-17, 10:39 PM Anyone out there East of Yonge with a VHF antenna getting CHCH
See post #122
x4mer 2011-08-17, 10:44 PM But I found out something interesting - if I turned it 180 degrees away, it was MUCH stronger and MUCH more forgiving of the aim. Maybe one of the antenna experts can explain this but if you have a 4221 and a rotor, here's a workaround!
See post #155. Bladeguay, you can try this too. Since you're in Brampton, aim your 4221 NE so the back is facing Hamilton.
majortom 2011-08-17, 10:44 PM Yup I would expect using a VHF Antenna you'll be fine if your in the intended coverage area.
Question is what's the intended coverage area?
otacanuck, think that was a response from the CRTC, thus the who's the "client" comment.;)
RustyHD 2011-08-17, 10:49 PM Mississauga 403 / Erin Mills Parkway. Stacked CM4221 got 18.1 perfect aimed at Buffalo, 11.0 analog came in perfectly, CHCH on 11 now get absolutely nothing. Rotate antenna and point directly at CHCH tower (max CITS) and nothing on 11.1. I'm thinking 9.1 CTV is also going to be a problem when it moves to VHF high. Looks like a VHF high antenna may be required if transmission power is going to be this low.
ota_canuck 2011-08-17, 10:52 PM Same question keeps coming up:
The old analog 11RF CHCH was VHF and you got it fine, so why do you need to mess with your antenna now?
x4mer 2011-08-17, 11:12 PM Their website is down. Too many people loading the site to complain?
majortom 2011-08-17, 11:22 PM hehe...
Does anyone have a link to their intended coverage map?
Contour, longley-rice or both?
CHCH? http://www.rabbitears.info/contour.php?appid=1282749&map=Y

Biggy 2011-08-17, 11:26 PM Ota Canuck,
Wow, I didn't know they reduced their output from 60kw to 6kw, it's hard to believe that's darn low. I remember seeing awhile ago a thread discussing "Effective radiated power, Canada vs. U.S." but I didn't follow it. I can't believe the CRTC allocated such low output power. There is lot's of unusual things happening with CHCH 11. It is presently coming strong for me at this time, I can't believe CHCH would accept limited broadcast.
We must be missing something here? I would have of thought they might have a power output at least 35 to 40 kw.
Interesting!
majortom 2011-08-17, 11:35 PM Thanks Trip...
While ur hangin around...
I was checking that out earlier, but it wasn't drawing the "contour"
I wanted to see what they "predicted".
It drew OK for me the other day but not today for some reason (clear my cache maybe?), anyhow it looked like a circle drawn from a compass. Not a typical Contour I'm used to seeing from predictions.
tvlurker 2011-08-17, 11:35 PM I can't believe the CRTC allocated such low output power.
The CRTC does not allocate the power. It approved an amendment to a broadcasting license. The technical details are handled by the Spectrum Management Divison of Industry Canada. CHCH might have been able to apply for a higher power than what the IC allotment plan allowed for, but given the overcrowded nature of the Southern Ontario RF environment, the rules may not have allowed it.
Thanks Trip...

The contour came from the FCC and was inaccurate. Because of the lack of any knowledge of tower height, any Canadian contours in the FCC database are wrong.
The reason you saw the contour then and not now is because I've changed some code. I'm not going to get specific at the moment as there's some things going on behind the scenes that I'll announce when it's ready, but here's what you are looking for: http://www.rabbitears.info/contour3.php?appid=1282749&map=Y
That link will probably not last longer than another day or two.

majortom 2011-08-17, 11:52 PM awesome, thank you Trip. That's exactly what I saw the other day...
Is there another set of plots for the old Analog?

I don't have the analog plots, sorry. Nothing on the FCC site either.
Also, this may or may not spoil the surprise I'm currently working on, but here's something a bit more accurate for CHCH: http://www.rabbitears.info/contour.php?appid=1282749&map=Y
