: Rogers Extreme Internet problems

Folks, I've been on the Extreme service with Rogers now since they deployed it. I have the Motorola modem. Download speeds have been spectacular, but lately I've noticed that when I use BitTorrent which silmultaneously downloads and uploads that my throughput is abysmal. And sometimes connections will get dropped all together. If I don't have bittorrent going at all, things are fine. So I can only assume it has something to do with the uploading that is causing an issue.

I have the motorola modem plugged into a Dlink DI624 wireless router and I'm using wired connections to the router.

Anyone else experience similar problems?

what makes you think its Rogers is the problem and not bitTorrent? or other folks using bitTorrent that have pokey upload speeds?

No problems and I'm on the SA DXT2100 modem.

The problem is either with my router, or with the Rogers modem. When my wife is surfing the net on her laptop and I have a BitTorrent going on my PC she complains of slow surfing speeds. The Torrent isn't even getting a fraction of the bandwidth either, it's barely even getting 100 K/sec however the upload is getting up to 50K/sec.

If I stop the Torrent surfing speeds go back to normal for her.

Eventually I'll try to elimiate the router by using a different router that isn't wireless (Linksys) but was hoping someone else had seen the problem before I redo my network.

Nope not your router at all...this is the way cable works(and other Asymmetric connections). They can give you fast downloads but to do so they have to limit the uploads. Here is a link explaining it.

Doesn't Extreme have 800 kbps upload? That's not a significant bottleneck, so I'm not sure that's the answer.

I had that problem when BitTorrent was eating all of my upload bandwidth, 50K is in theory half given we have 800 kilobit max however in reality it's probably eating up about 70-80% and that could substantially slow the regular browsing. It may also have something to do with the number of outside connections to your torrent file. If there are a lot then it may be slowing down your response times during regular browsing.

In any event I have experienced the same thing and I have Extreme, with a D-Link router.

Thanks for the answers. Glad to know I am not alone. I'll investigate how to limit upload bandwidth with BitTorrent to see if I can resolve my issues.

Edit: Found this link: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,6835151~root=poll,swapping~mode=flat

Not only does it show how to limit upload speed, it also includes a link to a experimental BT client that allows limiting in the GUI.

I was very pleased with the Extreme service but now have reservations. I regularly get 500KB/s+ downloads and can VPN to work with less then 15ms latency. Very nice.

I'm starting to notice, though, similar problems with Bittorrent. I find that if I don't limit the aggregate bittorrent upload rate to say 20KB/s then download speed suffers and my connection in general becomes very sluggish. Typically, I have (fantastic) 10ms ping times to my first hop but I've seen it easily go to 6-700ms if I let bittorrent go crazy.

I've seen some chatter around about different firmware revisions for my sb5100 and possible uploading problems but nothing concrete. I'm still within my 30 day return window so I might consider that if I can't sort out the issues before then.

Pings times are the only thing I don't like about Rogers in general. My average pings are about 120. Better pings would definitely seal the deal for my satisfaction with Extreme since I play a lot of online games.

I've been downloading with BitTorrent all night and it's been eating like 80K upload but my surfing isn't all but dead like it was before I had Extreme. Perhaps I do have 20K to work with still like the speed tests suggest.

By the way what do you guys get for pings to say the following sites?
www.cnet.com - I get 130ms
www.oracle.com - I get 112ms
www.google.com - I get 78ms
www.yahoo.com - I get 89ms
www.coe.int - I get 155ms
