: Slingbox Bandwidth Usage

 How much bandwidth on average does the slingbox use for both standard def. and HD video? I am looking at hooking up a slingbox to my Cogeco PVR so I can watch some TV at the cottage. I am worried however that the allowed 2GB month on my Rogers wireless account will be exceeded. Anyone out there have the info on this? Greatly appreciated.

You will be limited by your home internet service Upload speed. You can't stream it faster than your internet service will allow.

So, assume you have 600kbps service, expect it to max this out for both HD and SD (HD won't look good).

2GB is nothing for video streaming. I can chew through more than that with my iPhone hotspot with just infrequent web surfing at coffee shops.
A typical H.264 HD video will usually chew through 700MB hr, but I doubt Slingbox uses H.264

The stuff I've read on this (don't quote me and consider this unofficial) is that you could stream about 9 hours of TV content for a 2 GB cap. That's assuming approximately 500 kbps, which is an average.

You can use this for a rough calculation. In other words, if you were hoping to watch 1 hour of TV per day using Slingbox Player, you'd be way over limit at the end of the month. The numbers above amount to about 18 minutes per day if you used it every day for a month.

Sounds about right - uploading at 500 kbps = 0.225 GB/hr, so the 2GB would be used in about 9 hours.

Hi Jamcam,

I supposedly get 1Mbaud up with my rogers account. My slingbox streams at between 500-800kbps.

I used my iPhone and the slingbox app, and I measured the bandwidth according to the phone's logs for a 10 minute period.

I extrapolated that I could get about 40hrs with 5gb on my iPhone,..... with a 1gb buffer. ( I am allowed 6 Gb/month with telus)
