They want to swap out those old doorstops as soon as possible. The best way to do that is to put the most popular channels in MPEG-4. Not everyone has HDTV, but they aren't going to want to miss their sports. Pretty smart move. Everything will be in MPEG-4 in a year or so, and this is just prep work.

got a response from Ask Jim on receiver upgrade pricing if you subscribe to ST or CI:

DSR 600- for $29.99 (you can trade any of your receivers for this receiver)

DSR 605- $49.99 (you need trade in your 505 for this pricing)

HD PVR 630- $49.99 (trade in your HD 530 for this pricing)

They said the prices above include shipping (shipping isn't extra).

I gotta say those are some deep discounts. Still annoyed about not having all HD still. They said with the launch of their new satellite next year they will have the most bandwidth of any CDN provider. If that's true then there should be no excuse next year with ST being in all HD

I don't think anybody should complain about those upgrade deals. I know the "I paid $700 for the 530, and I'm not paying a cent more" argument, but $50 for MPEG4, more storage, and extended guide is well worth it.

I'm not complaining about the upgrade deal, I agree it is excellent. I'm complaining about the service they are providing in their ST offering. But that's a whole other argument.

This might have been missed but, NBA League pass is back this year for $5/ month (instead of included). It will include the online version as well, which is good considering they rarely show more than 1 game a night.

I'll assume the same standard def/ high def new box requirements are in play here as well.

Should the 530 > 630 price not be $99?....that's the price I was quoted today from ask Jim....

I think if they are forcing you to upgrade then the discounts need to be better. I signed up with SD for NHL CI a year and a half ago. Now i need to fork out hundreds more just to get NHL CI this year again? I'm not upgrading one receiver, i'm upgrading 4. Plus the price of NHL CI went up this year. This is very upsetting. I may leave SD b/c of this.

It's the fact that they are making people upgrade just so they can receive Standard Def channels....if I owned a 505 or 530 I'd be pi$$ed to have to pay money just so I can watch games in horrible standard def. That's brutal. If it was going all HD, it'd be a way easier pill to swallow for most people.

Shaw Cable last year, launched ST and CI in MPEG4, all in HD, AND offered to do a free swap to an MPEG4 receiver to anyone who subscribed to either or both. Now that's how it should be done.

I realize that Shaw Direct has the cheapest ST and CI around, but I'd GLADLY pay more for all HD. I think most people feel the same.

I know, I know, it's a bandwidth issue......

I don't believe it was a free swap;
it was a free 3400 DCX rental just for the season.

You're not going to like this but they will only give you up to two receivers at a discounted rate. Your third and fourth receiver is full price.

I went from a 505 to a 630 for $99 + shipping back in September. I didn't even have to trade the 505 in. I'm not sure if anyone else got this deal or not. They told me if was because my account has been open since 1999.

I got what i think is a good deal on upgrading 4 receivers to the 600 series ones. 2 went from a 505s to 630s. I don't want to post the deal yet until i see the bill and can confirm everything worked out as it was supposed to. Had to subscribe to NHL CI to get the deal. Will post shortly.

Just got an e-mail today (August 3rd), saying it is official: we need receiver 600, 605 or 630 to keep NHL Center Ice and/or NFL Sunday Ticket:o.

I will consider every options before buying. I spent to much on this the past years. 505, 530, 319 to replace the old receivers. Very frustrating times...

Received PART of my upgrade via Purolator this morning.....(upgrading 209>600 and 530>630)....only received the 600...with NO remote......when I called I was told that with upgrades to the 600, I'm to use the remote from the 209, and ship just the 209 receiver back.....seems odd...

i upgraded 2 209s to 2 600s and they both came with new remotes. Seems odd that yours didn't.
