MY RANT: Save your money don’t buy or rent a 6100 if you want to watch HDTV! This unit works great for SD but the picture freezes when watching HD, Bell ExpressVU will not admit to the problem and will tell you that you are the only one with this problem and the trouble is with your installation and it will cost you to fix it. I have two other receivers working on the same dish and they work fine, all receivers have a signal as high as 100% on some transponders.
This problem you have sounds spefcific to your receiver. You may want to request to have it replaced. I've never had a problem watching HDTV channels with the 6100 I have.

It was replaced.... so if it is the unit then BEV is just recycling them, replacing one bad unit with another.

I just ordered the 6120 HD package...

It's scheduled to be installed on August 11 between 5 and 9 pm.
Anyone have any tips that I should look out for during the installation to make sure that they do a good job? For example... caulk the hole thy will drill for the cable or cables to go through the house.

It sounds as though the newest software version (E559) of the 6100 has some problems with HD. Is this still the case or is it fixed yet?

If I check my receiver and it has a software version earlier than E559 is there a way for me to prevent it from updating so that I don't experience those problems?

Thanks.

Tips:

1) Make sure they install the dish properly - I have mine bolted into the bricks on the side of my chimney. You don't want the dish to move around in the wind. Also make sure that there is a clear line of sight (no trees etc.).

2) Make sure the installer does a check switch and also checks the signal strength of the transponders on both satellites (81 and 92). Mine are all above 76% with most in the 90's and 100%. This is important if you don't want to experience rain/snow fading and loss of signal. I have only lost my signal a couple of times in the last two years and for very short duration.

3) I have S/W version 559 and there is nothing wrong with it. It's the actual operation of the receiver that you need to check. I have a picture freeze issue that some of us on this thread complain about. You will know it when you watch HD channels and see the picture stuttering every once in awhile. Call BEV and get the receiver replaced if that happens.

4) S/W version 560 is supposed to be in the stream but it hasn't downloaded yet. You can go in the setup menu and disable the download feature if you don't want the S/W updated.

All ExpressVU and Dishnetwork receivers are now cardless for the exception of the 921/9100 HD DVR.

They are now utilizing an "embedded smartcard" technology where the smartcard info is stored on a chip on the mainboard.

I presently use a 6120 BEV for Hi Def. It does not have a smart card.
but what happens when my remote changes channels on its own , without intervention? This has happened a number of times. Can I reboot since this receiver is cardless? Are you aware of what might cause this receiver to develop a mind of its own

You may be getting interference from a nearby RF remote (as explained in the manual.) Change the address of the remote (as explained in the manual.)

Guys, I've officially popped my HD cherry with the installation of my 6120 the other day. Looks genius on my Sammy HLP56 DLP.

I've read through the 28 pages on this thread, but still need some help with something; screen sizing. This is driving me nuts.

I understand the HD vs SD format features etc.. but why is it that for some channels (eg. TSN-850) when I format HD it never goes to full screen. The stretch only stetches to the right, zoom as well. I've noticed this for a few channels but not all. Trying playing with the HD setting (480, 720 etc..) but found it did little to nothing. Does it depend on the feed from the broadcaster? I'm running DVI to DVI btw.

Also, does anyone know why in the hell some of the feeds are still coming in at 4:3?? I was under the impression that everyone was/is moving to 16:9.

Much appreciated guys.

Set your receiver to 16x9 and leave it. Pick either 720p or 1080i, both are HD [480p is not] and use whatever looks best to you.

TSN and other HD stations are still short of having all programing in 16x9 HD. In these cases either leave the picture at 4x3 or use stretch or zoom modes. I've never seen these stretch only to the right. You may have a defective 6100.

I have read several posts on short 1-2 sec screen freeze on some of the HD channels on their 6120s ... I too am experiencing this on my new installation. I have yet to find an answer to the problem. Any thoughts or answers?
Other than that, I must admit that my new 42" Panasonic (600) is absolutly fabulous in HD....

I've got the exact same system (6120/Samsung HLP5663/DVI-DVI). Unfortunately, not all HD channels are consistently 16/9 HD signals. You can use the stretch or zoom modes for those that aren't.Try Discovery HD, Oasis or Treasure (all are 100% HD) to check out your settings. Top of left of screen should show HD:Normal and screen should be filled.
I set my 6120 @ 1080i as I find in the best. Very happy with my set-up and PQ is amazing !

Thanks Coffenk et all. I was using Discovery and Sportsnet as my base for setup. Actully, the All HD channel too.

Small world that we have the exact same setup, I've tried both settings (780,1080) and found little difference. Left it at 780 for now.

Still wondering why TSN stretchs only to the right for shows like Sportcenter that are still 4:3. If it continues I'll swap it out for a new box.

Thanks again lads, cheers.

This is typical. I have just come to accept it. It has improved some over the last year.

Well you are SOL just like the rest of us.... sorry but that is the truth. BEV will not admit to the problem. However, I'm not seeing it as much as before... maybe they are doing something about it. We can only hope is guess.

Anyone know where to get a 6100 fixed? My problem stated with the unit completely freezing and not responding to the remote or front panel buttons. It's now not powering up at all. I'm in Vancouver.

If it is still under warranty call BEV and they will replace it for free... If not then they will charge you $49 and shipping for a replacment unit.

Has anyone had success finding a 'code number' that allows the expressvu 6120 to control the Panasonic DMR-EH75 dvd recorder/hard drive?

Just bought one and am still fighting on that one. I know the process for trying - but the only number that may work is 739 and the 6120 says it is not part of its assortment of known numbers.

As an existing BEV customer , I'm trying to get as much information about 6120 before i buy it and upgrade to HD. But reading these posts just made me hold on to my plan for now and wait.

I had a 6120 installed just a few weeks ago and I too see the freezing on HD channels for just a second or two. Is this fixed by replacing the receiver?

No it will not fix the problem... but call and complain about it. Mine comes and goes, some channels are worse than others.
