Now that channel 9 in Syracuse is using RF17, maybe it's time for CFTO to go omnidirectional. I'm anxious to see if it carries all the way down to Belleville, from the CN Tower.

The cost to change the antenna on the CN Tower would be in the millions but CTV has nothing to gain by doing it. If they want digital coverage in Belleville/Trenton then converting the Deseronto transmitter site would be much cheaper. More important is the fact that the FCC will continue to protect the channel 9 assignment for Syracuse as another broadcaster or new entrant to the market might want to use it. No country gives up frequencies without getting something in return. FCC will also continue protecting channel 10 Rochester from adjacent channel interference.

Word is, that CJOH, current channel 6 repeater, will be going to RF49, once the digital changeover happens. That's all well and good, but I wonder if the CFTO repeater still transmits, from up in the Kawarthas. I used to receive it years ago, but don't remember the frequency. Would like to try and hit again, if someone knows if it's still operational.

Kingston/Belleville is not a mandatory market, so AFAIK CJOH-TV-6 will not be converting at this time. (There are no public CRTC or IC records of CTV applying for a post-transition amendment to the license at this time, so I suspect it will stay on channel 6 analog for now.)

The CFTO transmiter in the Kawarthas will be transitioning this August, since its current channel (54) is out of the new UHF range (14-51), and thus must convert or shut down.

really off topic but Yes, 54 still going. Will move to 35 but the date has not been released yet- TBA.

That will all be good. I should be able to pick it up, here in Belleville. Typical CRTC/BCE bull. Eastern Ontario is underserved, compared to many other parts of the province, so of course, we won't get any new HD over-the-air. I already have Shaw Direct, but I like the uncompressed OTA better. At least CKWS should flash cut, because they are CORUS and not CBC owned. Don't know if Global on 27, from the Brighton area, or the Bancroft channel 2 will go digital on September 1.

AFAIK, Corus' plans for flash cutting CHEX and CKWS are in 2012 (except for CKWS Brighton which will flash cut in August, but I beleive with only an SD signal for now).

The Global stations will probably be coming up in the next couple of years, but not this summer.

Kingston-Belleville is not a mandatory market because there is only one originating station (CKWS) and the market size is less than 300,000.

Amazing. Nice to see that there's uniformity in the Canadian changeover. I guess this area is second class, in comparison to the rest of the province. :o

Rochester 10 is always reliable out here and so far never seen Barrie at all. Hope they consider a channel change with power increase as we have no CTV2.

I am new to the OTA system. Having moved to just north of Brighton I acquired a mast with a large UHF/VHF Ariel, rotor and amplifier. We have been subscribing to Shaw but find the selection very limiting. As we watch mostly US network shows.
I have been sweeping the airwaves and have been experiencing some variation in availability. I have a Samsung TV and as previously discussed only have the full scan function.
Last night I moved the unit about and can get Rochester, Syracuse and Watertown, I also get global, CBC and a mixed CTV . I wonder if someone can assist with a rotation direction that will get all 4 networks and PBS.
I don't care about CTV or CBC for that matter.
My antenna says due south is 180 as I face south and looking at a map fror Rochester I think it should be at about 185, however, when I set at that I loose PBS and CBS is missing, other are very good. At 150 it gets PBS but still no CBS. At 225 it get Watertown.
Is there a way of finding the mast locations - Lat/Long so I can aim this - is it that crucial or am I just a putz.
Maybe none of this makes sense. Just my wife likes NSIC and it is on CBS starting next week.
Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place.

Follow the new users instructions on the forum to use TVFool to get a "radar" plot with bearings to all the stations from your location.

I'm happy to report that after several weeks of testing, I've not seen any issues with co-channel interference from CKVR Barrie and CFPL London. When pointed at Barrie, I cannot even catch a whiff of CKVR.

This was a concern for me prior to the conversion, as I'm roughly equal distance between Barrie and London.

That doesn't surprise me. Based on my experiments in Toronto north, CKVR is very weak. I get stations that are nearly three times the distance away with my setup, but I cannot get CKVR reliably.

I also have found it’s a non issue here with WHEC as I continue to not receive CKVR no matter how hard I try.

Its not an issue because CKVR is not covering their old coverage area. They have simsub rights in the GTA but dont have a signal to support those right.CKVR needs more power. My CKVR reception is not reliable at all .Check the Barrie forum and you see people cant get CFTO on 9 and cant get CFTO repeater on 21.Barrie now has no CTV 1 coverage. All the VHF stations need more power.

It's not so much a power issue. It's more of a high noise floor issue on VHF. In essence if you could remove the noise, the signal would likely work ok. The other way is to increase power to overcome the noise so the SNR meets the threshold for a lock.

I can receive all the Barrie FM outlets in clean FM stereo.

What's it going to take for the CRTC to realize it bungled the VHF issue in Canada and bump the powers, or will the incompetence drag on?
