WNGS-dt coming tonight .Sound level is very high.Got 4 bars using UHF only antenna. This is probably tropo as ION is at max.

WNGS is coming in strong for me tonight as well - on a 4228HD UHF antenna just south of Kitchener!

Came in strong for me as well (using a Winegard PR-8800). One of the subchannels was blank with a constant tone.

This morning, the station is gone.

Okay let's be sure to keep checking the Tropo thread (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=121819) first before posting about sudden WNGS signal strength jumps. :) You'll see that tropo has been high lately.

If you do get WNGS courtesy of tropo its okay to post about it here, but be sure to indicate the tropo probability because our members are trying to gauge the real signal strength performance as that station goes through its re-inauguration and teething problems.

No confusion using this tool on the fcc site.

Plug in Buffalo, NY, Press GO. Then expand WIVB-DT, WKBW-DT, WNGS-DT
It'll place a Tower ICON on the map at the location of the transmitters,
with some Signal Strength, etc. Obvious WNGS is at the old RF67 site.
U can use the standard Google Maps MAP, Terrain, or Satellite View.

Well, no wonder we have such a difficult time with this station in southern Ontario! It's way south of Buffalo...

Hmm. If you click the gain/loss map there, for WGRZ,WIVB,WKBW, they all show the service contour ending right about the international border line in Lake Ontario. WNGS' contour shows it go to the same extent. WNGS is sure gaining alot of American audience post transition according to that gain/loss map.

WNYO shows as being RF49, but on the gain/loss map, it shows it as broadcasting on D34 from G.I. still.

Yeah, even I couldn't really receive Analog RF 67 OTA back in the day.
If I had to guess, it woulda been like a Grade D PIX using rabbit ears.
Pretty much like WBNF-CA RF 15 is right now with the outdoor antenna.

I really don't believe its the distance, but rather the height of the antenna which is preventing us north of the border from getting a reliable signal. Also RF-7 in the Hi-VHF band is still quite noisy when compared to the UHF band and I can see this on my analyzer. To get a lock on rf-7 you need at least a 20db margin above the noise level. My guess is that they will eventually move to the WKBW tower and that will fix all the issues we have here.

Certainly there are more variables that impact reception beyond simple distance between transmitter and receiver: Antenna height and contour, co-channel and adjacent channel interterence, etc. However, it certainly doesn't help if that signal must pass through a city + 100km to get to you...

I finally received WNGS using my CM 4221 12 feet above ground level in Etobicoke. :) Nice tropo this morning.

btw, sent tvfool some feedback. The forum website they have setup
to report database errors, etc. is still way too slow to start a new thread,
so had to use the "contact us" link, as suggested by tvlurker.

Briefly summarized the confusion issue, and pointed them back to this
thread here at dhc if they need further details.
Let's see what they have to say.

Your feedback to the webmaster has been sent.

What channel is WNGS?67-1?

RF7, which is on the VHF Hi band. It remaps to 67-1. The antenna El Gran Chico has is a UHF antenna, but it does have some VHF Hi band gain as a 'flaw' in its design.

It might be more of a tropo factor than his antenna, the flaw is in the 4228 for picking up VHF.

Well obviously tropo had some effect as well ;-)

I also mention this, b/c I got 4221HDs (stack) and I have never got a scent of WNGS. :( My only option is to get a C5 and then maybe I'll get it, and maybe also have a good chance at getting Erie 12.x..., and Rochester (VHF) during tropo. Cheers!

@goforit

You should try and build a Stealth Hawk and test with it. If I was able to lock onto it (yeah, good tropo that day) with just a "Hawk" in my attic, I could only imagine what sort of success you would have. It could also determine if a C5 is really worth it or not.

I still hope that they aren't transmitting anywhere close to their ERP, and after all the "i"'s are dotted and "t"'s crossed, they increase the power. Then this channel should hopefully be more reliable than just current "tropo" events.
