DXer;

Tropo refraction*can* be very localized, and exist between certain paths and not others.

I received WPTZ, as well as VPT last evening, as well as WNPI and WCFE. Still no sign of WNYF, which is supposed to be LOS at my location. Indoor no-name 4bay at 20 feet.

I too have received WPTZ the last couple of days. I swung one of my antennas, my big CM4242 at Plattsburg a couple of days ago. I have been doing some preliminary testing before I try a dual antenna setup to get WPTZ more regularly. I was kinda hoping no-one else was getting it and it wasn't tropo.

However last night and this morning tropo was pulling in CFCF (12.1), CFTM (10.1), CIVM (17.1) and UTICA WKTVDT (2.1 real 29). 4 more PBSs were also coming in from Mount Mansfield on (33.1-33.4 real 32)

William Hepburn's website has a good summary of the different tropo effects:
http://www.dxinfocentre.com/propagation/tr-modes.htm

Note that the "tropo" stations in your TVFool refer to tropo scatter, not tropo inversion or tropo ducting.

Thank you, tvlurker. The link was very helpful in expanding my understanding of the tropo phenomena, and of TVFool's 'tropo' term

In the case of the Vermont stations, it seems that we have been seeing is tropo ducting, not scatter or enhancement.

Alas, the forecast for ducting tonight doesn't look nearly so good!

For the first time I am able to get a U.S. station - WPBS 16.1, 16.2, and 16.3 (rf 41). Funny that I can't get WNPI. WCFE or WNYF which have a higher nm than wpbs from my location. That's tropo I guess.

I was picking up WPTZ(5.1) last night too. Still doesn't beat my record of that buffalo station(4.1) I got a few weeks back.

The night before last, I was trying to tune in Global TV on RF6 again and instead I was getting analog CJOH from Deseronto for crying out loud! (I'm in north east Ottawa near Montfort) There's nothing left of Global's signal in my south facing appartment.

Way back, I have seen both Rochester and Buffalo from Hawkesbury, too.

During the summer of 1986, I was seeing stations from North Dakota and South Dakota.

That was pretty cool (until all channels turned into PBS and you couldn't watch anything - other than PBS...).

Last night was another great tropo night

I had:

Fox and CBS don't remember which channels: 23 (18.1.2) I think
and PBS 38 ( 57.1.2.3)

And the other PBS channel 16.1 I think.

I still do not have a pre-amp. I just ordered one from eBay at a very good price. Hopefully it will get here before the first snowfall. I can't get on the roof once it gets too cold.

I also purchased a USB TV tuner for my laptop (Hauppage 850Q). Can't say I really like it. I'm having a lot of tech issues. It won't work with windows media centre and the bundled software is clunky.

I will give it another go tonight.

You will probably pick up CBS/FOX more often with the
Amp. I get them daily.

Feast or Famine

Last night and this morning, I managed to get 3 different NBC affiliates.

My experiments with a single cut antenna pointed to Plattsburg, received 5.1,(NBC-real 14) and 5.2 THIS, as usual.

My HD8800 pointed at South Colton (exact same angle for me to Albany) received via tropo Albany 10.1(NBC real 26), 10.2 weather, 10.3 RetroTV

Then this morning I was watching 2.1 (NBC real 31) and 2.2 from Utica.

Albany is the best catch at 215 miles.

WTEN is an ABC affiliate, not NBC. :)

Last few nites and AM thru 9:45 WCFE(38) is a torch!
WPTZ(14) is only starting to sputter as I write this.
Last nite VPT(33) was available so I watched an hour or so.
I don't often scan but I saw some PBS programs that interested me on Monday. My location is blocked to the south to the "normal" US stations for Nepean so if I can get away with only WCFE consistant evenings thru AM I'll be quite happy.
Are these signals coming from Mt. Mansfield? Is WPTZ coming from Tupper Lake? It seems to be consistant with WCFE.

VPT 33 and WPTZ 14 come from Mount Mansfield. The other two UHF channels from there have locals here on the same channels (22 and 43 CHCH and CHRO).

WCFE is from Lyon Mountain. They have a translator in Tupper Lake, but it's on channel 25, co-channel to CBOT.

"WCFE is from Lyon Mountain. They have a translator in Tupper Lake, but it's on channel 25, co-channel to CBOT. "

WCFE is on channel 38. So is it Mansfield or Lyon?

Thanks for the input.
