: OTA: Eastern Ontario & Quebec DXing, Tropo, Odd Reception: 2011
GerryB 2011-07-25, 05:09 PM I can see Herbert's Corners from here, just not South Colton. So channel 32 is not easy to take out.
Im heading to the east coast soon, so if I take some gear out to Grand Manan island in NB and grab WFXT, WGBH, WSBK, and WBZ in digital then I want the title for east coast DX.
stampeder 2011-07-25, 10:24 PM if I take some gear out to Grand Manan island in NB and grab WFXT, WGBH, WSBK, and WBZ in digital then I want the title for east coast DXNow the pressure's on you to do it! :D
GerryB 2011-07-27, 10:33 PM Piece 'o cake Stampeder. Just need a rare sunny day on the east coast
Great night in Ottawa again - all Syracuse channels locked and solid

PanaMark 2011-07-28, 07:41 PM bowhunter, congrats on the catches, however that pic you posted is not PG rated. Perhaps its just me but I see something in the picture.
Regardless great to hear of the nice catches.
stampeder 2011-07-30, 02:12 AM It looks like a man's crossed legs on a beige sofa... (?)
anyways, back to tropo. :)
bowhunter 2011-07-30, 01:14 PM I'm not sure what the heck the image is but I know it was from Buffalo.
Nothing bad ever goes on the American news does it?
I'll try to get more family friendly pics next time, like a Buffalo Sabres commercial maybe... LOL
Anyways, as the heat and humidity build up again this weekend I look forward to seeing what I can pull in again.
bowhunter 2011-07-31, 10:53 AM Buffalo and Rochester and Syracuse perfect again here this morning.
gully rider 2011-08-04, 04:10 PM Hello folks ... just a quick question from a newbie located at http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3d3e47aaf12ccd6c. Could all this tropo activity have killed my WPBS/WNPI reception? It's been reliable for years, but disappeared without a trace over the weekend (though it was working Saturday morning). WCFE disappeared for a while too, but returned Tuesday (Aug. 2nd) afternoon. Just curious because I don't want to replace any antenna components just yet. Many thanks ....
moody 2011-08-13, 01:44 PM I did a scan around midnight last night. My results:
WNPI (18.1, 18.2, 18.3, RF23) came in fine, but I usually get this anyway.
WNYF-LD (28.1, 28.1, RF18) came in loud and clear, only second time I've happened to see it.
And as for Watertown:
WWTI (50.1, 50.2, RF21) locked for the first time ever.
WPBS (16.1, 16.2, 16.3, RF41) locked for the first time ever.
WNYF-CD (28.1, RF35) locked for the first time ever.
This was with a SBGH, attic-mounted, pointed toward South Colton. Unfortunately, after I did the scan and saw these channels, my mythtv box crashed and required a looooong chkdsk on boot, so I didn't stay up to see if any were actually watchable. I didn't have a VHF antenna attached to this lead, so I couldn't see if WWNY (RF7) was viewable - probably would have been.
I tried again this morning at 7am, and WNYF-LD was still coming in flawlessly. I still saw flickers from Watertown but not enough to fully lock onto any of them. I'll try again tonight to see if the behaviour repeats itself.
I was surprised by WNYF-CD - that's really low-powered.
GerryB 2011-08-13, 07:36 PM WNYF-CD has been a big surprise for me all summer. Ive gotten the channel 4 nights out of 7 every week, for hours at a time. RF35 is supposed to be low power but doesnt seem that way. I dont even consider it to be a tropo anymore.
MaxPower 2011-08-17, 07:45 AM What a morning of reception. I tried a scan this morning and picked up the following channels I don't normally get.
2-1 WKTV-HD NBC 60% signal
2-2 WKTV-DT2 the CW
16-1 pbs
16-2 pbs
16-3 pbs (all same as the 18's)
43-1 WNYS-DT
43-2 COOL-TV
50-1 WWTI-DT abc
50-2 WWTI-2
stu593 2011-08-17, 09:47 AM In my previous post, I noted that I was now getting Global digital but had lost CBC French digital. I was very surprised to see that I am also getting 3 USA stations (I think that these are WCE-DT PBS-SD? WCE-DT PBS HD? and WCFE-DT ThinkBright?). CTV signal (13) still analog, but it is terrible compared to last week.
becks 2011-08-17, 09:50 AM There's great Tropo conditions last night and this morning which is why you're probably seeing the 57-1 channels if you don't normally get them.
ve2vq 2011-08-19, 10:40 AM Last night was crazy Montreal stations on clear chs were great after midnight.
CBMT-DT RF20 ch6.1 Local Sun ch at CF was down
But I did not see CBFT RF 19 ! ! others saw it around 6Am
CFCF ch12 Analogue
CFTM ch10 weak
CFJP ch35 strong
CJNT ch62 weak
backpackster 2011-08-19, 11:26 AM When I pulled in CBFT-DT (2.1/19 Montreal) this morning I should have realized it was tropo from Montreal as I too have been getting CFCF (12) and CFMT (10) from Montreal the last couple of nights. Quite good tropo since my HD-8800 is pointed 70deg west of Montreal to messina/coulton.
CBFT-DT may be a more regular occurrence once it goes to full power, but I am not sure what the point of receiving it is...
gully rider 2011-08-19, 03:22 PM Further to my previous, etc. etc. With my antenna aimed towards the southwest, an autoscan on my Samsung LN40B610 thankfully found WPBS 18-1, 18-2 & 18-3 and even brought in 16-1, 16-2 & 16-3. Unfortunately, it wiped WCFE (57-1, 57-2 and 57-3) from the channel list. Rescanning while aimed southeast restores WCFE but wipes out my other channels. From what I can gather, there is no way to retain, or manually enter, missing channels on this model of Samsung. What a pain! Guess I'll have to experiment with a less directional antenna, or perhaps combine two facing in different directions. Thanks Samsung !
GerryB 2011-08-20, 12:34 AM Getting ALL channels from Rochester, Syracuse, Watertown, and WGRZ in Buffalo. Probably can point the antenna for the rest of the Buffalo stations. Very Very strong tropo night here in Ottawa.
ve2vq 2011-08-20, 01:30 AM Confirm, that with only a fixed M4 antenna pointed at Masena,NY
that I am receiving:
RF19 WSYT 68-1 Syracuse, NY
RF28 weak Video analogue FOX program
RF43 WNYS 43-1 Syracuse , NY
RF47 weak signal SNR 7-12 should be WTVH 5-1, Syracuse, NY
becks 2011-08-20, 08:02 AM Yep great conditions last night, got all the Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, Watertown channels, the last scan came up with something like 54 channels. Everything but the Buffalo channels still coming thru this morning
