Picked up WYTV-DT (and it's subchannels) last night (RF 36). Quite a feat, considering that CTS is booming here out of Hamilton on the same channel.

Also had a host of channels--the usual tropo stations--from Ohio, Michigan and Syracuse, NY.

Here's an interesting one. The last two nites in a row, WNLO (UHF 32) and WNED (UHF 43) have been off the air. They're both on Grand Island in Buffalo, unsure why they are down but... Low and behold there is Detroit's PBS station WTVS on UHF 43...TsReaderDump (http://www.wuala.com/whosurbud/Documents/TsReaderDumps/Aug18th2011/)

Ah yeah noticed WNED is also offline. Unrelated note I'm catching a blurry CityTV from Woodstock on 31 from downtown Toronto but that's nothing special :P

Since WNLO is off air right now... can anyone see analog 32 TVO here down near Windsor? Could witness a 2nd TVO transition once they shut the analog off. Hasn't happened yet.

hmmm, there is a hint of an analog signal on UHF 32 right now...2:36 AM
Lemme go try and peak it a bit with the rotor, see if any clearer..

Edit: maybe not, 31 CITY from Toronto's boomin in adjacent.

Yes, Detroit PBS is often a WNED killer for me here in Kitchener.

LOL, could be worse, like wiping out WNED with a distant shopping channel.

I had this half crocked low power 9.1,9.2,9.3 Erie PA WLEP-LP 43RF station coming in last night and again tonight while wned 43RF is off the air.

U still looking for this?

Hmmm, interesting! The 12kw WLEP-LP 43RF station contour at 390ft above ground level almost makes it into Dunnville, but I suppose the WNED flamethrower normally wins the battle ;)

As of 8 AM, I'm picking up 23-1/2/3 (ION) which is (I think) WVPX out of Akron with 3 bars, but over the next 20 minutes it's fading down to 2 bars. With my antenna pointed due south, I'm picking up a total of 16 digital channels (including subchannels) - only 2 of which are local (TVO and Sun). Somewhat odd that I'm not getting WFXP (66-1).

Despite all the talk about VHF being bad for digital, I've been picking up WJBK Virtual 2 RF 7 quite often. They are at 20Kw in Detroit. I suspect it is simply because tropo can be more frequent and stronger at lower frequencies. I keep picking up Detroit but it never lasts long enough to watch an entire show. It's so short lived, some of the channels are often gone by the time the scan finishes. Picture quality is fabulous though. It reminds me of when I first had HD over satellite many years ago and the signal was not compressed to SD quality.

Still no sign of any Canadian digital tropo. (I mistakenly said US in a previous post.) I've had Canadian analog channels booming in from Toronto or Windsor at times but never anything digital but local stations.

As most of you are familiar with my set up I have been enjoying the best summer for OTA since I have my set up (about 2 years).
This hot summer has been a blessing.
Cleveland and Erie have been very good, and on most evenings Detroit too.
For the most part I have had trouble free reception in the last 2 months of the strong channels like WEWS, WKYC, WDIV, WFXP. WJET.

Things I have learned are know work are:
Antenna outside, and check various heights, and locations on your property.
If you live close to transmitters, ie: 30 miles forget about preamps. This is pretty much all of London.
If you go with VHF and amplification, you need an FM trap.
Use good quality coax, and if you plan to feed more than one television consider a good low noise preamp roughly 20 feet downstream from the antenna.
Use a good antenna, it makes a world of difference!

I have been receiving WBBZ during the evenings here in Oakville using a Winegard HD-7080 pointed directly for WBBZ along with a CM 7777 preamp ever since CHCH analog was shut down. This was rarely the case before so I guess CHCH analog was somewhat interfering with RF 7 when using a preamp.

Just a reminder for everyone getting excited about better than expected results with new Cdn digitals,

Conditions continue to be extremely hot around the southern part of the province, even more than the typical summer "enhancement" i've seen over the years. It got to the point today where i picked up weak stuff from London (like CKXT 19 at a paltry 7kw) at 4 in the afternoon!, and some Cleveland and Akron stations are being picked up here inside the house with just a tiny uhf loop antenna with no amp.

Gonna have to wait it out. It's been a huge tropo summer to say the least.

In my apartment 28 WCMZ Flint and 50 WKBD Detroit are the first two DTV signals to start coming in on top of the regulars that I get from Detroit. With a little help, TVO on 32.1 also comes in.
At the best of times I have seen Cleveland, Toledo, Lansing, and Bowling Green, Ohio. This is from the fifth floor facing SSW, so I have trouble with anything from the east, namely London.
The antenna is an old indoor Recoton antenna + an Antennacraft / Radio Shack two piece booster.

So for tonight, Detroit is a complete bust. Only 1 station from Buffalo (WKBW - 3 bars). WNYB is strong (7 bars). WKBN, WYTV, WNEO (Youngstown) all coming in strong (10/10/8 bars). Only getting WJET and WFXP out of Erie. Getting WKYC, WEWS, WQHS out of Cleveland (not WUAB).

Getting 2 new stations out of Akron -> WRLM (47-1/2/3/4 RF 47) and WDLI (17-1/2/3/4/5 RF 49). WRLM is one of those TCT (Christian) stations (like WNYB) and WDLI is also some sort of Christian station (PTL?). However, I'm not getting the ION station (WVPX) out of Akron.

This is with a yagi, no amp, no VHF.

Hey Marc1178, I'm wondering if there is a worse place to be in Ontario besides London for OTA, and I'm thinking that maybe Sarnia is it. What can you get during the day?

ScaryBob
2011-08-20, 12:30 AM
Sarnia is actually not bad for Detroit markets. It's probably not as good as it was when 2, 4 and 7 were analog power houses but at least reception is possible without tropo. Channel 50 (ind) was pretty good at one time as well.

Marc1178
2011-08-20, 12:46 AM
If you have a good deep fringe antenna system, Sarnia isn't bad for OTA. The problems are that CTV, Global, and CBC are staying analog in this area and on top of that TVO is weak unless you are South or East of the City Limits. I also hear that TVO Windsor was allocated 350,000 watts by Industry Canada back in 2009, but is only at 19,000 watts right now.

Tropo was hot this morning. I was receiving Global 29 from Oil Springs with a decent picture.
