PanaMark 2011-08-06, 09:32 AM In addition to those, I seemed to be getting a blank carrier on 43-8,
43-9 and 50-4. Anyone know anything about those?
43-8 and 43-9 are part of channel WNED 17-1 RF43 PBS Buffalo
50-4 is part of 54-1 WQLN RF50 PBS Erie
without getting into detail they are channels that provide updates and such if your receiver can accept them, otherwise useless channels.
Didn't really pay too much attention to the analog channels I was getting, but I was picking up channel 9 (A Channel / CTV?) which I wasn't familiar with - where it that transmitter located?
this is analog channel 9 CTV Toronto, I believe from CN Tower. You had you antenna pointed towards Buffalo for a bit and that is when you would have received this.
Phil81 2011-08-06, 03:35 PM Picked up stuff from Toronto and even Peterborough here. (CHEX-TV 12 at 430 kms, CIII-TV 27 at 427 kms). CHEX was new.
Seen here:

..and CIII Toronto during the news.

Even saw Sun TV RF66 and partially OMNI1 on RF64. Other than that, conditions were variable and stations came and went ranging from central and west MI to central OH and NE Indiana and Erie, PA.
sumguy99 2011-08-07, 01:53 AM So I raised my yagi about 10 feet higher and picked up a few new stations tonight, but some others that I got last night I'm not getting tonight. Very overcast and low clouds tonight. It even rained very lightly.
So here's what I didn't get:
2-1 WGRZ Buffalo
17-1 WNED Buffalo
23-1 WNLO Buffalo
27-1/2 WKBN / WYFX Youngstown Ohio
45-1/2/3/4 WNEO Salem Ohio (near Youngstown)
49-1/2 WNYO (Buffalo)
51-1/2 WGGN New London Ohio (middle of nowhere)
And here's the new stations:
3-1/2 WKYC Cleveland (antenna pointing 195 <-> 225 degrees)
4-1/2 WDIV Detroit (255)
7-1/2 WXYZ Detroit (240)
28-1/2/3 WCMZ (PBS) Grand Blank Michigan (!) (75 degrees?)
61-1 WQHS Cleveland (195 <-> 210)
So it was kinda neat to get the two Detroit stations. But their reception was touchy. The PBS in Grand Blank (near flint) is strange - my antenna was pointed pretty much 180 degrees away from it.
The blank carrier on 50-4 comes in at 120 degrees (that would put it in Erie PA, or a little further up the coast into NY state)
The big winner seems to be 66-1 WFXP. I get that no matter where I point my antenna from 105 to 210 degrees. It's located in Erie, which is 130 degrees from me.
Question: Does Port Huron have no stations (that can be picked up in London on a good night) ?
Question: Are there any Canadian digital channels (other than the stupid Sun channel 19.1) that can be picked up in London? Say, from anywhere in the golden horseshoe / Toronto?
cm023 2011-08-07, 02:09 AM Question: Does Port Huron have no stations (that can be picked up in London on a good night) ?
Port Huron is considered part of the Detroit market. I remember reading somewhere they did have a allocation for a TV station years ago, but once they were swallowed into the Detroit market it was pointless. I have also heard that Detroit stations are not easy to receive reliably full time in Port Huron, this making this a harder OTA market.
Question: Are there any Canadian digital channels (other than the stupid Sun channel 19.1) that can be picked up in London? Say, from anywhere in the golden horseshoe / Toronto?
Now, not reliably.. maybe some with Tropo. After Aug 31st all our stations will convert to digital.. unless you are a fan of the CBC then see the lengthy thread on the CBC not investing in Digital OTA for London.
someguy23475 2011-08-08, 06:22 PM Port Huron was allotted 46 many years ago but it was never built, and eventually it was moved to Bay City (to replace 61). The only reliable signals in that area are from Sarnia, and CFPL. Detroit is hit or miss, especially with digital. Flint is practically non existent.
sumguy99 2011-08-08, 11:26 PM Some strange results tonight (between 10 and 11 pm). I get no Buffalo, Erie or Cleveland stations. I get most Detroit stations - even when my yagi is pointing directly at Buffalo (90 degrees). WCMZ (28 - PBS Flint) is coming in strong even when pointed at Buffalo and Erie.
I don't know what would account for this - maybe the signals were changing faster than I was scanning, but I seemed to have better luck getting 62-1 (WWJ), 2-1 (WJBK / FOX2), and 56 (WTVS - PBS) with the antenna pointed towards Buffalo vs Detroit. My TV registered 62-1 during the scan, but showed no picture, and only with the antenna pointed to Buffalo.
And this is strange: Also with the antenna pointed at Buffalo, my TV registered 43-177 and 43-193 during the scan. No call signs or anything, and no picture.
So what's new for tonight is 2-1 WJBK (FOX) and 56-1/2/3 WTVS (PBS) - both in Detroit. But a lot I'm not getting tonight.
majortom 2011-08-09, 12:55 AM even when my yagi is pointing directly at Buffalo (90 degrees)
curious if you looked to see if it's really facing east in that position? (i.e. a CM rotor??)
sumguy99 2011-08-09, 09:23 AM I don't have a rotor - I'm manually turning the mast. I have a template with a hole in it where the mast goes through so I know where it's pointed. This is a temporary setup - something I put together just a few days ago.
PanaMark 2011-08-09, 05:40 PM indeed, last night there was extremely strong tropo reception from the Michigan market.
I was receiving Detroit, Lansing, Flint, and Saginaw.
I ended up watch Original Gangster over on THIS network on 4-2 WDIV sub channel. RoboCop is on later this month.
sumguy99 2011-08-09, 08:39 PM In my previous post I mentioned that my TV registered channels 43-177 and 43-193 but didn't give me any info on them, or a visible picture. Based on this thread posted to the usenet newsgroup alt.tv.tech.hdtv in September 2008:
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.tv.tech.hdtv/browse_thread/thread/d9fcd3fffc786c82/
someone else had also discovered those channels and linked them to WTVS, but the question as to what those channels are was never answered.

PanaMark 2011-08-09, 09:12 PM Those channels carry updates for tuner software and such but I have yet to see one of my tuners ever get an update. Most PBS station's carry these channels.
Usually it will say "mode not supported" on my Samsung, and my Panasonic does not even register it.
Regardless I just delete them from my channel lists.
I hope this assists a bit.:p
edit: Trip you beat me to the punch, nice lay out.

someguy23475 2011-08-11, 08:59 PM On the analog side, I'm picking up CFTV out of Leamington right now. That's a rare pick up for me, due to their very low power.
Lecocq 2011-08-11, 09:53 PM I'm in Chatham-Kent and for the past 3 or 4 days am getting 19.1 Sun News on a regular basis where I never did before. Have they upped their signal strength??
alebowgm 2011-08-11, 09:55 PM Tropo from London...
Phil81 2011-08-13, 02:10 AM Just picked up WOIO's new Akron low powered RF24 signal from the WVPX ION tower. Didn't even know it was on the air already. I don't expect to see this channel often with it's 11kw strength.
PanaMark 2011-08-13, 07:44 AM sweet pick up Phil....I haven't even bothered to rotate the antenna towards the Cleveland market as the Erie market has been great lately.
In fact this morning Buffalo market stations are hitting the tele's here in London except RF7 which for some reason is catching WJBK from Detroit from the back of the antenna, and RF14 Buffalo's FOX channel, on account there is TVO analog here in London on RF14.
Can't wait to see if I will be able to see WOIO on the repeater transmittter. The problem might be co channel for me here from London over on RF24 with WJET Erie.
Thanks for reporting this.
sumguy99 2011-08-13, 06:48 PM So as of 6 pm tonight (when I started to have a look) my antenna is pointed 135 (Erie PA) and I'm getting 24 (WJET) and 66 (WFXP) at 7 bar strength (I'm 88.5 miles from them). I'm 3.6 miles from 19.1 (SUN) transmitter and it's coming in at 4 bars. (my tv needs 1 bar to show me a picture). 54 (WQLN) is coming in with about 5 bars. I'm also getting 27 (WKBN - Youngstown OH) but only with 1 bar (I should have my antenna pointed 165 for it but I don't). Yagi with no amplifier, about 25 feet off the ground.
Maybe someone can explain this, but I'm not getting 35 (WSEE) at all. TVFool won't even show me WSEE on the list - even when I put my antenna height as 150 ft. I have gotten it on previous nights.
7pm update: Antenna pointed 97 (Buffalo) but getting no Buffalo stations. Still getting Erie WFXP and WJET (5 bars each) but no WQLN.
7:30 pm: Antenna pointed 195 (Cleveland) and I'm getting WKYC (3 bars), WEWS (6 bars), WQHS (5 bars) and WUAB (2-3 bars). I don't think I've gotten WUAB before. Also getting WKBN (Youngstown) at 8 bars, and still getting WFXP (Erie) 6 bars.
7:45 pm: Ok, tried Detroit (245 degrees) and got no stations (other than the Sun station that is). So I switched back to 180 degrees (sort of between Cleveland and Erie) and got all the Cleveland stations, WKBN (Youngstown), WFXP (Erie), and one new station: WVFX (23) ION. Got all 3 sub-channels. Signal strength was only 1 bar. Not sure where that transmitter is - will have to map it. I think that's going to be all for tonight - unless I get any new stations later tonight.
PanaMark 2011-08-13, 07:46 PM @sumguy9
WSEE RF16 Erie CBS is a very difficult channel to pull here in London. Ironically I have been receiving more often lately. They have very low kW signal towards London, too bad for them.
as of 7:35 PM this evening I am receiving all Erie market channel`s
9-1 WLED-LD, 9-2 TUFF, 9-3 infomercial RF43
12-1 WICU, 12-2 WBEP, 12-3 WSEE RF12
24-1 WJET RF24
54-1 WQLN, 54-2 CREATE, 54-3 time shifting RF50
66-1 WFXP RF22
Equipment and proper filters are required IMO to get decent reception from the Erie market. You`ll need a VHF antenna if you want 12-1 WICU RF and a channel 10 trap to tame CFPL. Be very careful if you introduce amplification in our surrounding area, it actually can be worse for the tuners.
As far as relating signal strength, I have a few televisions that display various signal being received from bars to actual percentages.
as sweet, over on 3-1 WKYC they have the Browns vs Packers game!
