: Rogers Price Increase: March 1, 2011
guzuta 2011-01-13, 12:32 PM Just got my price increase notice. Looks like most cable packages going up $1-3, home phone packages and long distance plans $1 each. Sorry if this was already posted somewhere, I didn't see it.

thenewdc 2011-01-13, 05:39 PM So what else is new. You can't win. Doesn't matter who your provider is, you're still screwed.
I add annual Rogers fee hikes to death and taxes as the only things you can rely on.
That's it, I am out. Going over the air. Between that and the internet, cable is irrelevant.
becks 2011-01-14, 09:12 AM I think that's it for me, I'll switch to a 3rd party internet provider and download any shows I want to watch. I have no problem with rate increases if there are improvements, but I'm yet to see any of those
SMCKINNON24 2011-01-15, 01:09 AM You will notice there is a new VIP package called VIP Ultra Movies Package.
I found out from sales today that there will be alot of new HD channels and channels in SD that will be launched this year.
bdoyledimou 2011-01-16, 12:38 AM Rogers should wait until they have the new channels launched before billing for them.
I can't see any improvments over what i had last year, or the year before that.
krectus 2011-01-16, 01:38 AM becks, while I hate to come to the defence of Rogers on anything. To say that they haven't improved their cable service is pretty much a lie. They are adding channels on a regular basis, improving their on demand content including adding HD on demand all the time and adding new features like the new auto HD.
And their annual small increases is nothing to really get all prissy about...they are annual increases, they do it every year as does every other cable provider...ever...in the world.
JamesK 2011-01-16, 07:09 AM ^^^^
TVO and NASA are now available in HD and, IIRC, we now have some left coast HD channels that we didn't have before last year.
stucatz 2011-01-16, 10:45 AM This is the new negative billing! Add some new channels, tell
you it's included, then raise the rates. How can you complain!!!

And they keep doing it, and will continue to, because like sheep we just swallow it without voicing any dissent. Rogers is making millions, they don't need to keep raising rates by incremental amounts each year. But they do.
canadalisten 2011-01-16, 01:20 PM People talk of Rogers adding new channels. Where are they? The last channel I can remember Rogers adding was Disney Playhouse, and unless I want to go back to my childhood, that channel does nothing for me. Hopefully Rogers will add new channels to Atlantic Canada's lineup, but not holding my breath for it. The last time I did hold my breath for it, I needed to be revived.
metalhawk 2011-01-16, 08:10 PM Rogers may add channels, but at the same time numerous channels have been removed from the VIP package as well.
becks 2011-01-17, 08:45 AM Really krectus you're going to defend them? Sorry but for the yearly increases I've been paying I don't see the same in yearly improvements. Sure they add a channel here and there but 99% of the time it's useless channels that are only taking up bandwith which results in the HD channels I actually want to watch being compressed more and more each year. Also, a lot of these so called "improvements" esp to the pvr features are years behind when they should of been released and Rogers doesn't even provide us with the most up to date firmware so we can have features that are available from other providers. Sorry but I find Rogers a total cash grab company with very little thought for their customers. I can understand an increase every few years or so when necessary upgrades are needed, but this is now a yearly thing which is totally ridiculous. /Rant

Umm then why is it (VIP Ultra Movies Package hilighted below) under the current options at 116.46$ increasing to 119.96$?

krectus 2011-01-17, 12:45 PM I agree that Rogers still has a lot of work to do. Their HD quality is barely HD and they need a lot of work on their PVR functionality and ON Demand could be much better. They are falling behind in a lot of aspects.
I for one have scaled back to a lesser cable package last year and have voiced my complaints to those who will hear it.
But I dunno what to tell you boys, that's capitalism! Rogers main, number one goal is to make as much money as possible, you can't really yell at them for doing just that. Yay capitalism!
I downgraded from Digital VIP to Digital Plus today. Didnt feel I needed to spend the extra money for channels I didnt watch.
Funny thing is I have always had an SD box and got my HD over-the-air. I upgraded to a Cisco 4642 HD box to see what Rogers HD was like, after going to Digital Plus, it's still $5/month cheaper than VIP with an SD box.
I ended up getting free rental of the HD box for 1 year and 20% my internet for 1 year.
Sad part is that Roger HD is nowhere near the quality of OTA HD.

This thread is for discussing the price increase, if you wish to discuss programme pricing, please use the following thread, which, by the way, has a great spreadsheet on the channel differences you've questioned in post 17.
