Rick Dude 2012-07-10, 05:42 PM Unless anyone can confirm co-channel interference on Global CHAN 22 due to weather conditions, I have another theory.
It was a very hot day when the drop outs occurred and they became shorter in the evening as the temperature fell. This shows a classic case of equipment overheating and going into shutdown mode to protect itself. Then, as the equipment cooled down slightly, it started up again. As I think the carrier disappeared, I suspect the transmitter output or pre-driver stage was the culprit.
Archerotor 2012-07-10, 07:38 PM I don't know if temperature alone would be the cause. 25 degrees Celsius isn't that hot for equipment failure. Otherwise, you'd hear about it a lot more from areas like southern California, where it consistently gets much hotter and there are many more transmitters and translators to be affected. Maybe ask some people on the TV fool forum in the US. It could very well be that the smoke particles are causing problems with our generally lower powered digital signals.
Rick Dude 2012-07-10, 09:26 PM This is the first summer with the CHAN digital transmitter at full power. If the installation was only just adequate for cooling and it got it a bit warmer, the transmitter gets overheated. I agree that TV transmitters are operating all over the US and Canada, but it depends on the installation quality.
rimor 2012-07-11, 12:10 AM How do you figure that? CHAN-DT went full power on June 29, 2011.

25C is the perfect temperature for the batteries that companies used for backing up their equipment...not sure if you've ever been inside some of these rooms, the airconditioning is turned on fairly high especially with equipment providing lots of heat...
i think its just too much interference in the daytime...
Ndnile 2012-07-11, 11:34 AM Both 8.1 (rf22) and 26.1 are back up and running for me no issues 18-26db.
I receive 25 (22.1) at the same time and there has never been a co-channel issue for me (they are not co-channel) as I have 2 (42.1) one from omni vancouver the other day star Seattle and I have received both multiple times with no issue for the display channel overwriting each other that only happens when 2 channels are using the same RF with different display channels. I think it was them fine tuning the new setup in tandum with the smoke issues.
Archerotor 2012-07-11, 02:34 PM So will CHAN 22 be having a subchannel or a separate channel for their all News channel? Any idea when it'll be up and running? It is to be OTA?
JesseBlue 2012-07-12, 09:09 PM re-scanned and managed to pick up kiro and komo but lost chan...that usually is my most steadiest station and now its gone....
will rescan tonight in hopes that i get the rest of the seattle stations even if they are dropping....
Rick Dude 2012-07-15, 11:44 AM Further to my earlier comments about CHAN-DT, I do believe that it has been on reduced power the past few days. On 14th July, signal quality was ~92% and 15th July it now checks in at ~95% quality. Normal for me is 100%.
CKVU-DT has a lower transmitter power of 8.3 kW ERP along with CHNM-DT. On 15th July CKVU-DT quality measures ~82% and the normal is ~97%. This is why I suspect it is on reduced power.
All other Mount Seymour transmitters show 99-100% quality on 15th July. My location is Port Moody with a clear line of sight to Mount Seymour, 7.8 miles (12.5km) distance. Coquitlam Ridge blocks signals from the south.
I am in electronics design and appreciate dealing with component power dissipation for reliable design. On a very similar note, last year I noted my PC seemed to be running very sluggishly in warm weather, but was fine when cooler. Upon opening the case, I found the cooling fins on the CPU totally clogged with dust. The result was that the fan could no longer cool the CPU and it was shutting down briefly to protect itself and then starting again. This was not causing a complete shut down of the computer, just an apparent slowdown. After vacuuming the dust out of the cooling fins, I then taped an air filter over the air feed duct on the side of the case to prevent this happening again. I also installed a utility that monitors the core temperature so I can keep an eye on it.

The CRTC hasn't issued a decision on whether to approve it. The application was for a specialty channel, not for an over-the-air channel.
tvlurker 2012-07-15, 09:45 PM And it's highly unlikely that:
1. the CRTC would approve a specialty channel for carriage OTA
2. and even if it was approved, it is highly unlikely that BDUs would pay for a specialty channel that was available for free over the air, although arguably Shaw Cable in Greater Van might :-)
Ndnile 2012-07-17, 11:29 AM Here is an email from Gerry over at chan 8 (rf 22) vancouver.
They will be on the tower this week installing Pattison antennas should be back to full power for good next week as that will complete the major fm projects.
stampeder 2012-07-20, 01:43 AM Thanks for that NDNile - I hope you can invite Gerry to come and join us here as a member. We have lots of members from within the industry. :)
Rick Dude 2012-07-20, 07:43 PM Checked 20th July and now getting 100% quality from CHAN-DT. So, they are back on full power again.
Ndnile 2012-07-23, 01:47 PM I am receiveing "Global" chan 8 (rf 22) at between 17-26 db SNR in Victoria now. They are back up to full power.
Archerotor 2012-08-05, 03:21 AM Did the same dropping out for the 6 o'clock news tonight (Aug 4th), but was good for the show coming on after the news, post 7pm. It was hot again, 28- 30 degrees Celsius this time, in West Vancouver. Wonder what the issue is with the higher temperatures and the dropouts.
dave604 2012-08-05, 10:43 PM What is going on with the Rogers-owned OTA stations CITY 10.1 and OMNI 42.1? They are out yet again. It seems like they are off the air every second week.
Sunday evening Aug 5
Archerotor 2012-08-06, 01:30 AM Yes, in addition to intermittent dropouts with CHAN-DT UHF 22, CHNM-DT UHF 20 and CKVU-DT UHF 33 are both showing good signal strength but no sound or picture this evening (Aug 5th). Again, a problem when the weather is hot. A coincidence, or could they be doing work for a radio antenna again?
Has anyone contacted any of the stations or Rogers technical people?
dave604 2012-08-06, 04:43 PM CITY and OMNI are back - yay!
levibluewa 2012-08-06, 06:01 PM Hi Dave,
I just noticed 10.1 was back, but the signal level seemed to be down 62%, normally 73-76%...also 17.1 seemed down 65%, usually around 86%. Is there something going on at Mt. Seymour?
