No Sound on CHNU-DT

I called and they said they have people up at the transmitter today and hopefully it will be solved today tomorrow at the latest. They were very curious where I was calling from they wanted to know how the signal was here nice to see an interest :)

I have been getting sound on CHNU on 21.1 right along, on the west side of San Juan Island.

Interesting. I would think that the Victoria repeater channel 21, which is still analogue, would pick up directly from the Abbotsford transmitter. The sound is probably the wrong format on the Abbotsford transmitter.

The Victoria repeater is digital on channel 21.1, it flash-cut on August 30th

OK. I saw on another web site it would be November 30th before it went digital.

With many thanks to dtvinvictoria, I have new TSReader data for the Victoria and Vancouver stations (but not K24IC-D or CHNU-47, as those were not receivable). Here's what stands out at me.

CBUT and CBUFT aren't just at 720p, they've also cut the bitrate down to about 15.25 Mbps. I'd say I'm not sure why, but I think it's either because the feed is at that rate, or they don't want to have to downgrade later on to add Mobile DTV services.

CHEK is feeding MPEG-2 audio, as suspected. Also, the video bitrate is 2.5 Mbps, not too bad for an SD subchannel when an HD is present, but they could really bump that up since the rest is basically being wasted.

CIVI and CIVI-2 have joined CIVT in providing TVGOS service.

I'm not really sure what to make of KBCB's recent addition of HD. It's at 9.6 Mbps so if there is any actual HD content on it (and I doubt that) it probably looks really miserable.

That's what stood out. The data will appear on RabbitEars later this evening. If someone can use TSReader with CHNU, maybe I can look for the audio problem people are experiencing.

The null packets 16 plus Mbps that would be suspect too :)

KBCB 24.1 and 24.3 are both showing the NBC Shopping Channel.

Another note, CHEK's TSID is wrong. If anyone here is in touch with CHEK, can you tell them their TSID is 16679? They have it as 4127, which is right if you're using hex (0x4127 = 16679).

The new data is now up on RabbitEars. :)

CIVI-2 17-1 occasionally has lines like interference or data missing, but not macro blocking. I'm getting a good strong signal at 90% and this is the only channel I have this issue. Could it be their equipment or a poor quality signal? I have direct clear line-of-sight with the broadcast towers.

Re: CHEK-DT

I have a Samsung TV and I am getting sound with CHEK-DT, but the sound is way lower compared to the other channels. I have to double the volume on my TV to get equivalent sound of the other channels.

On my TV, the volume of analog CHEK is the same of that of the other local digital OTA channels.

Are other people who are getting CHEK-DT with audio having the same low volume audio issue?

rimor, audio level on 6.1 here is the same as all other channels.
One thing I did notice with 6.1 however is that it is right in sync with Bell satellite channel 255. I thought this was strange because ota is always 3-4 seconds ahead of satellite.

Rimor - CHEK engineers are aware of their audio problems (Mpeg-2 instead of AC-3) and are waiting on parts. Once that has been resolved (no ETA when I spoke to him last week) then I'd revisit the audio volume issue and address it if required. They've got changes in the works.

I've also noticed that there are occasional very small horizontal lines- some don't go right across the entire screen, but some do- they appear and quickly disappear. (Similar to what you would see from a video tape.) It's almost like the 'blocks' are so small you can't see them clearly, but they form a neat, thin horizontal line (that doesn't freeze the picture), and then they are gone, in a duration of about 1 second. I wonder if it's a signal/multipath issue; but I am experiencing it as well.
