Interesting.
Though I'm not sure what it has to do with anything :p

Me neither, as long as I can remember up to the Analog shutdown, WNED has always been a public Broadcaster on Channel 17. So what ur saying is PBS / WNED had been broadcasting on the "commercial frequency" for over 50 years? If that's the case the whole commercial/non-commercial allotment thing is completely meaningless.

Don't even recall any reference to a Channel 23, until WNLO came along.

it clarifies Trip's comment about 23/WNLO

WNED was broadcasting on CH-17 as far back as 1959. In fact I have a Toronto Star Tv listing from 1959 that shows it. It was a NET affiliate at that time, same as PBS today

It has to do with my observation that non-commercial border stations seemed to be better able to maintain high-power omni-directional contours in the latest Canada-US digital agreement than similarly situated commercial stations.

On the other hand, it might just be a coincidence.

I find it hard to believe that their decisions could possibly be based on station status of 10 years ago. Though.. who knows, with the way government works :p

"it's already in place" argument doesn't really work, as they had to change channels entirely, and many stations were forced to change contour (e.g. WUTV)

Thus my original comment
what does (a station's status 10+ years ago) have to do with anything (in post-2009 broadcast spectrum) ;)

Perhaps nothing. Perhaps CW is not a "threat" to Canadian broadcasters, and thus no one complained. (On the other hand, Fox 29 gets to carry the SuperBowl once every four years.)

Or it could be luck of the draw, plus the fact that none of the American broadcasters could know at the time they had to make their final channel election where exactly all the Canadian allocations would be.

WUTV and WNYO were last in applying for their DTV licenses and the CRTC realized how good the reception of earlier stations WGRZ,WIVB,WNED were and the fact that WUTV takes Canadian advertising resulted in protectionism thru blocking with directional signals.

That's one way of looking at it.

Another way is, if they were the last to apply, they were stuck with trying to squeeze into the overcrowded transitional allocation environment.

Southern Ontario was FULL, and in the transitional environment, twice as many stations needed to find space. Canadian broadcasters were stuck with a bunch of allocations in the high sixties, for which they would have to buy equipment with no or low resale value. WUTV and WNYO had to squeeze in where they could.

WUTV and WNYO had to squeeze in where they could.

Why did WUTV not return to RF 29. I bet RF 29 would not have been directional since it was not before 2009.

Some non-existant Canadian allotment bumped them off of UHF 29. I really dont understand how a Canadian proposal can just force them off of the channel they've been using for 40 years. This makes no sense. Another good one is why did WNED go from UHF 17 to UHF 43. Is not 17 a better allotment?

Perhaps it's the allocation for Channel 17 @ Kitchener, which is for (never-to-be-used) post-transitional CBLFT-8. That station is currently on Channel 61.

Has anyone noticed that WUTV FOX has been extremely hard to get the last couple weeks? It was coming in just fine and now my receiver registers there's a signal of reasonable power but SNR is garbage. Wondering if it's just me or not.

EDIT: I should mention all the other channels I receive are fine, it's just WUTV

WBXZ-LP, on UHF 56 not sure what's more of a waste.
It's normally a Home Shopping Channel.
For the last two to three weeks straight it's had this card up.
Wonder what the "video trouble" could be?

I've been using the same setup for over a year now. Everything has been pretty much decent. Antenna is roof mounted, pointed towards the buffalo stations, I can see the CN tower from my roof. Pretty much no major problems for the last year.

Tonight a load of shows that I record with my SageTV PVR had numerous cutouts. I checked the channels and mostly the Buffalo channels are at or near 5% signal strength. Usually they're not a problem at all except for maybe 2-1 NBC. Right now that channel is no longer reachable.

Is anyone else in the Mississauga area having similar issues?

The heavy fog/weather is most likely the culprit. I noticed that a slew of channels got remapped on me - WUTV 29.1 remapped to 14.3/.4, WIVB has been down, CFTO remapped to 40.4, Suntv Hamilton on 15.1...down. Surprisingly, I kept on getting MyTV on 49.1, and it is further away from both WUTV and WIVB from me...go figure.

*UPDATE*
As of this morning, due to the dense fog, I ended up loosing 2.1 (and subs) and as my youngest watched WNED (17.1) that went out too, as well as 49.1. The only buffalo stations I have left are ABC (7.1), TCT (26.1), and CW23. Though I got back SunTV, the dense weather is taking a toll on CFTO and I noticed that even TVO is showing alot more noise than usual.

Alwzn4vr, I'm sure once this fog goes, you will have reception as usual. It is just really thick out there.

Isn't WBXZ supposed to go to DTV on CH-34. They have an approved application for it.

Lost a number of the Buffalo stations yesterday also. Luckily it was a good night to have these dropouts since I was watching hockey anyways.. I wasn't too worried about missing these stations. My antenna sits on my balcony so I could play around with the aim but I was having problems all night with anything from the US. The only channels that didn't drop out were 17, 23, and 29. The rest of them were hit and miss or entirely gone throughout the night (2,4,7,26,49,51). These channels are for the most part rock solid for me (except 51) so I just chalked it up to the heavy fog over the lake.
