jgconnor 2011-04-11, 09:01 PM Back up. Just as House is ending. Oh well, will have to get it from another source.
I'll be glad when Global is up to full strength. Fox isn't the most reliable for me.
majortom 2011-04-11, 09:23 PM yeah WUTV was completely toast around 7 ish. Zip Zero Nada signal. No idea why, weather was partly sunny here, no storms near me at least.
mr weather 2011-04-12, 05:00 PM It was warm yesterday in GTA so there may have been some fog over the Lake Ontario (since it's about 10 degrees cooler than the air over it).
I notice stuff like this during spring and fall.
broadcastboy 2011-04-12, 05:06 PM Power issues on Grand Island yesterday from late afternoon on. 3-phase voltage all over the place. Detectors in the transmitter won't let it fire up without good power. They have no back up generator. It took a long time for NYMO to restore stable power.
CenturyBreak 2011-04-12, 06:39 PM Thanks for the update broadcastboy. I presumed, like mr weather, that it was a variation of the 'evil tropo' we always get in warm weather here in Burlington!
For majortom, sunny weather without storms is the worst situation for WUTV from May to September, due to the 'evil tropo' mentioned above.

That's interesting. For me January and February are the worst for WUTV.
Does anyone know if they will be changing their contour after the Canadian analogue shutdown?
CenturyBreak 2011-04-12, 07:23 PM It depends on which part of Burlington you're in, I suppose!
In north-central Burlingtonville, the temperature difference between the shoreline and Lake Ontario means that just after sunset every sunny warm/hot day from May through September, WUTV-DT disappears... luckily that only means House reruns fade out around 8:45, rather than first-run. ;)
My understanding is that there are no plans for a contour change after our analogue shutdown... I wish there were, as that would likely overcome the 'evil tropo' dropouts, and we'd only lose signal on the hottest summer evenings... that applies to the strongest Buffalo stations (usually WIVB-DT) as well. :D
majortom 2011-04-12, 08:50 PM Just guessing when u lose WUTV your not losing WNED or WNLO? which are both nearly at the same location, but not using a directional pattern.
meanwhile WUTV disappears occassionally because ur barely receiving it now, since ur in a null of it's directional antenna pattern. If ya could somehow optimise while WUTV is weak, ya might fair better?
I could tell it was completely off the air as there was no signal whatsoever. I'm in it's main lobe, and it's normally one of the strongest, so was pretty obvious.
wilspin 2011-04-12, 09:42 PM Glad to hear it was not my DB8 letting me down. First time for a while I could not watch Simpsons at 11pm. What is with the directional transmitter anyway? Never use to be this way in analoge.

Last year I sent an email to WUTV. They informed me that it was Industry Canada's request (demand?) that they limit their broadcast signal into Canada to avoid interference with one or more Canadian signals. WUTV is quite frustrated by this as they know that the GTA markeplace is very rich for advertising dollars.
I can only hope that post-transition, that they are allowed to increase their signal to the north, but I have no information to suggest that this will actually happen.
While I do have LOS to their transmitter, the signal is not strong enough for me to rely on it.
Jase88 2011-04-13, 09:46 PM If I can pick up Global (which shows House and Chicago Code) here in Kitchener, I'm surprised that some have difficulty with it in Burlington and the GTA.
Jase88 2011-04-13, 09:47 PM It's down on Rogers too.
Rogers picks up the Buffalo and area stations via OTA as well.

I got the same message from WUTV as well. They definitely seem interested in providing more signal into Southern Ontario.
I suppose we could complain to IC...but I doubt it would do any good.
SpitsFanSec108 2011-04-13, 09:59 PM Whats with Industry Canada requesting signal away from Ont.??? Ive read this in a couple posts. We seem to have the same problem here in Essex Co. with Toledo Ohio stations being asked also. Why is WUTV abiding by these requests anyway.whats Industry Canada going to do if they increase signal coverage,? this is purely censorship at its worst.Just my 2 cents.

Hmm, I looked through the list and the only station that "may" come in conflict with WUTV's signal is CITS out in London (on RF14 to). So I decided to take a different approach and requested Industry Canada to explain why WUTV has been requested/demanded to adjust their signal away from Ontario. We'll see what sort of reponse (if any) I'll get.
majortom 2011-04-14, 08:13 AM while ur at it, shoulda asked them if CITS RF 14 from London is required to be steered away from the US. i.e. - is it OMNI or directional. If not, why not?
Marbles_00 2011-04-14, 09:44 AM I think it is CITY that is directional. That, I don't think, was any demand from IC or FCC, or broadcasters in the US complaining. I think CITY was trying to direct its signal towards it's "major" intended audience...the main Toronto population.
Hopefully that will change after the transition. From what I've been getting, a Roger's Engineer informed me that they should be transmitting at 5kW, and their antenna gain is around 14dB. Even at 75% power output, their ERP should be around 100kW...omni-directional. If your getting CBC now, then you shouldn't have a problem with City come this September.

Here was the response that I got from WUTV. He says it was the CRTC, but I would have thought that it was Industry Canada who controls the "airspace". But I, obviously, don't know for sure:
The CRTC has restricted us from broadcasting into Canada over the air. It seems our digital signal is very close or the same as a channel reserved for a Canadian station. This would be why you can get other Buffalo stations, but not us. We are not pleased about it, but there is no other choice.

Humbar 2011-04-15, 07:56 AM What are you talking about?? I get a 100% reliable signal from WUTV Northeast of Toronto.

That's good for you. Not all of us are so lucky. The fact is that WUTV sends only a fraction of it's total power to the north, so depending on your circumstances, it may be enough or not.
If they were "allowed" to increase the power to the north, we'd all enjoy the signal that you receive.
