Elmsley,

What kind of antenna do you have?

Some other odd reception for me in Kingston last night, Sept 27, around 10 PM.

No picture or sound, but a re-scan "add" last night also picked up:

30-1 rf 30 CKWS-TV (CBC) out of Brighton Ontario. No picture or sound, but the convertor box added the channel and call sign to the channel list.
Never had that one show up before.

Brighton ON is about 100 km / 60 miles west of Kingston, on Lake Ontario.

I had other abnormal long distance reception last night too.
Buffalo direct OTA from Kingston - diagonally across the lake.
Posted that in the Lake Ontario DX thread.

Strange night for reception last night. Weird weather conditions. Approaching weather fronts and rain. Strange South to North winds. Humid but no rain yet.

Syracuse was coming in abnormally strong and well too.
90% in some cases. ex 9-1 and 9-2 WSYR Syracuse - ABC at 90%

... and the elusive, rarely seen by me 3-1 3-2 WSTM-NBC out of Syracuse at 30-40%

mrvanwinkles I experienced the same with ckws 30-1 while camping at presquille in Brighton this past weekend. I did a manual scan for the chanel using my tivax converter and got 100% signal with no picture or sound. It seems as if the feed from kingston to the Brighton transmitter was cut off.

Hey everybody,

Tropo has been WILD tonight! I came home at 11pm to see all UHF Rochester stations coming in (WROC, WUHF, WXXI, W42CO) and then Cleveland, OH's WEWS (RF15) joined the party briefly. Erie, PA's WQLN (RF50) also arrived, making tonight a Tri-State Tropo fest!

Then things got crazier! I started getting Clearfield, PA's WPSU (RF15) and Johnstown, PA's WJAC (RF34). My jaw dropped when Greensburg, PA's WPCB replaced WQLN on RF50.

I've noticed some unusual blinks on the signal meter too. RF40 and 46 blinked, as well as RF48. I'm guessing RF48 might be Pittsburgh due to WPCB coming in. But 40 and 46 are complete mysteries to me!

Hope some of you are up catching this awesome reception! :)

But 40 and 46 are complete mysteries to me!

RF 46 might have been WVVA.

Seems like WPSU was a new one for a few people last night as it was for me. At 196 miles it didn't break any records for me, but it's always nice to see something new show up.

I was also able to get all Rochester stations (including RF42) as well as rf17 [WSYR] and rf24 [WSTM] from Syracuse.

Too bad so many of the Syracuse stations are on the same rf as local stations.

Wish I had had more time to play around.

I picked up 2.x, 17.x, 26.x, 29.x, 49.x from Buffalo and 51.x last night from TO
where x denotes main and sub channels. I usually don't get these.

Lost Global 6.1, City 31.1 and CFPL 10.1 which are on more local towers (Woodstock/Paris) which I receive off the back side. Not sure if this was due to co-channel or overolaod issues.

Must have been Syracuse as getting many stations from Syracuse and Rochester,Utica WKTV rf 29.Toronto stations need to power up to prevent tropo interference.

Definitely strong tropo tonight. All over the map, too. So far I've picked up:

3.1 WSTM Syracuse
3.2 WSTQ Syracuse
3.3 CNY Syracuse
8.1 WROC Rochester
8.2 BOUNCE Rochester
9.1 WSYR-1 Syracuse (this one clobbered CFTO)
9.2 WSYR-2 Syracuse
24.1 WJET Erie
24.2 WSEE Erie
51.1 ION Batavia
51.2 qubo Batavia
51.3 ION LIFE Batavia
54.1 WQLN Erie
54.2 WQLN-S1 Erie
54.3 WQLN-S2 Erie
55.1 WBNX-1 Cleveland
55.2 WBNX-2 Cleveland
61.1 WQHS Cleveland

First time I've seen Cleveland in a few weeks. WQLN Erie comes in most nights, but it is rare to see it in the day time like I did today.

All this is on a little Terk HDTVi. I seem to be in a bit of a sweet spot, as I bring in 22 reliable channels, including CHCH. It will be very interesting to see what a more powerful antenna can do. Maybe I will ever be able to get CBLT, which for some strange reason has been giving me no end of problems since the digital transition. Ahh, the joys of OTA.

Getting 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 from Syracuse up here in Stouffville tonight. Also picking up the TVo repeater from Paris. Funny though, still can't get NBC.. Plan on reaiming the antenna soon..

Also getting an analog 29 CBC - need to figure out where that one is from!

Tom

Update: 29 CBC is from Kitchener!

South of the border I just had the best DTV night of my life. Usually I get just CBLFT, TVO, and CFTO if I specifically aim the antenna for it. Tonight I was getting CBLT, which sometimes comes in as well as CHCH and CIII, which I've never seen before. I also got a Channel 8 and a channel 28 to scan in, but the video didn't lock. (WROC and TVO Kitchener???)

This is all on a set of 30 year old Rabbit ears in UHF mode resting on a ceiling beam, so about attic-level. :D

Today my new (old) rotator went up. On my first scan, mid-afternoon in Toronto (Pape & Danforth), I got WWNY on virutal 7.1 from Watertown NY (I think).

Ohio absolutely booming in this morning. I was rescanning to see if I could pick up the Buffalo channels I lost last night when scannng, and to my surprise loads of Ohio channels pop up. I've got:

3.1 WKYC Cleveland
3.2 WXPLUS Cleveland
5.1 WEWS Cleveland
5.2 WEWSLYN Cleveland
6.1 WSYX Columbus (new)
6.2 My TV Columbus
10.1 CFPL London
10.1 WBNS Columbus (new)
17.1 WDLI-1 Canton (new)
17.2 WDLI-2 Canton
17.3 WDLI-3 Canton
17.4 WDLI-4 Canton
17.5 WDLI-5 Canton
18.1 WHIZ Zanesville (new, but very weak signal)
23.1 ION Akron (new)
23.2 qubo Akron
23.3 ION PLUS Akron
24.1 WJET Erie
27.1 WBGU Bowling Green (new)
27.2 Encore Bowling Green
27.3 Create Bowling Green
53.1 WWHO Columbus (new)
54.1 WQLN Erie
54.2 WQLN-S1 Erie
54.3 WQLN-S2 Erie
55.1 WBNX Cleveland
55.2 WBNX-SD Cleveland
61.1 WQHS Cleveland

Nice to see them, but WDLI took out WNED on 17, while ION killed WNLO on 23. Also WBNS took out an earlier tropo channel CFPL on 10.

Another record for the little Terk. So many new ones today.

Nice pickup, to get Scranton from as far east as the Kawarthas. Not getting tons tonight - a couple of Erie stations (WJET and WQLN), a couple of Rochester stations (WXXI and WROC) and ION from Batavia. Yesterday morning was my best day ever, with a number of new pickups, and a new distance record too, which was Columbus, Ohio.
