WNLO 23 Buffalo at 79.5 miles

I have some reception in the 20 mile range, however, the majority of my reception is 50-59miles away with WNYO at being 59miles

In the summer, [through tropo] I quite frequently get ION Batavia at 80 miles and WEWS Cleveland at 150 miles for extended periods of time [days/week] depending on weather conditions.

I get all the south BUFs* 24/7- they are 70 miles away; I also get WNYO which is 75 miles away. All that with no amplification, and an antenna that is rated for 45 miles. (*No WNGS)

Jase88 should pipe in, he probably has the distance record for 24/7 reception.

Hey! I don't even get WNGS anymore since whatever they changed back on December 22nd. I used to get it 100% 24/7.

In terms of distance (UHF): WNYB-DT. Religious station (TCT affiliate) from Jamestown, NY., @ 95.7 miles on channel 26. This station always comes in strong. Not sure of it's ERP, but it must just be blasting out.

WIVB (ch 39) comes in close @ 107.7 miles, but does drop out sometimes in the winter, thus technically excluded.

Furthest decent reception on VHF: CKNX (/A\ repeater Wingham, ON) channel 8 analog, @ 58.3 miles. CKVR (/A\ Barrie) analog channel 3, @ 75.4 miles, is perfectly watchable using a VIP307SR high-gain VHF (which I've since taken down).

Most impressive to me: CITY-DT Toronto @ 57.4 miles on channel 53. Extremely impressive as this station is currently putting out approximately 2kW ERP. Only possible due to the high gain on that channel from the XG91.

You are on the escarpment though. That easily gives you a 50 meter (minimum) advantage to areas surrounding the lakes.

How's WUTV relative to say WNLO and WNED, and any sign of WNGS there in St Kitts? Good weather or bad? Off topic, just curious.

All 3 are 10/10 on the meter with:
WNED @ 34.0 dB
WNLO @ 30.20 dB
WUTV @ 30.80 dB

So if WNED has the lowest ERP of the 3 off GI, why do they have the highest dB?

WNGS:
I have signal, but can't lock. If I had a VHF antenna I guess it would be receivable.

WOW. That is going to be hard to beat!

I used to get about a dozen channels (CBC, FOX, CTV, some Buffalo) when I lived on the second floor of a house near downtown toronto. Then I moved north less than half a KM, but am on the 20th floor on the north side of my building, and there's no other tall buildings for miles... I get nothing

I got a years special deal fro Rogers but now it's almost up and I'm looking for alternatives - boyfriend really wants the sports channels, I want CBC and thats about all... any recommendations? I asked the management if they had an antenna on the roof I could hook into but they thought I was nuts... what did everyone do 20 years ago in buildings like mine?

Where is the CN Tower in relation to your apartment? Is it on the South side? If so, then you are basically out of luck in getting any reliable OTA. Also you can't get the sports channels like TSN and Sportsnet via OTA, only Universal Sports (sub-channel of NBC), so your boyfriend would be outta luck. The only thing you could do is put in a request to move to a South side apartment when one comes available, which would aid in putting you LOS to Buffalo, and CN Tower (depending on where that is in relation to your apartment complex)

What would really help us though is your general location (major street corner) and TVFool report. That way we could aid you better.

For Hamilton Mtn. I'm on the low end at 192m (above sea level)- with my tower, over 200m. The west mountain of Hamilton is much higher- 230m, while Kitchener is very high- over 300m.

Areas near the 407 and north Toronto are also good- 200m plus. The WNYO tower is on land of 350m elevation and goes up considerably toward the other south BUFs- no wonder they are so strong. ION (WPXJ) is lower at about 300m, while Grand Island is the lowest, less than 200m.

WNYB is a whopping 530m above sea level (plus the tower), and I think omni-directional- no wonder you get it.

Yeah, I reread my post and was a little harsh. It's always worth a shot to put up an antenna and just see what you can get. For the cost/time to build a M4, SH, dipole, or GH, its worth the experiment.

But kino distinctively indicates that there aren't any other buildings for miles, so a reflection signal is most likely not possible.

Solar winds usually only have an effect at the magnetic north and south poles. Unpredictable behaviour is most likely due to recent solar winds hitting earth's magnetic field & the uncertainly of where magnetic north&south happens to be at any given time during the polar reversal process.

During this historic polar reversal "the magnetic field does not vanish. It just gets more complicated,"

See post 15:
They've also learned what happens during a magnetic flip. Reversals take a few thousand years to complete, and during that time--contrary to popular belief--the magnetic field does not vanish. "It just gets more complicated," says Glatzmaier. Magnetic lines of force near Earth's surface become twisted and tangled, and magnetic poles pop up in unaccustomed places. A south magnetic pole might emerge over Africa, for instance, or a north pole over Tahiti.

EARTH-DIRECTED SOLAR FLARE: Keep this in mind in case of strange reception over the next days.

Sunspot 1158 unleashed the strongest solar flare of the year so far, an M6.6-category blast. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded an intense flash of extreme ultraviolet radiation.

The eruption produced a loud blast of radio waves heard in shortwave receivers around the dayside of our planet. In New Mexico, amateur radio astronomer Thomas Ashcraft recorded these sounds at 19 to 21 MHz. "This was some of the strongest radio bursting of the new solar cycle," he says. "What a great solar day."

I was getting WNYO and ION last night. All Buffalo area stations were very strong (exception WNGS, which I could sniff, but couldn't get a lock on).

Hey guys just wondering if anyone else is having difficulty with there buffalo reception, mines dropped right out over the last week and now the only ones that come in are 23 CW, and 26 TCT, all the others are just below the viewing threshold at like 13.1 or so on my tv's SNR meter, needs fifteen to show a picture, usually there at 20 DB or more. Kind of sucks 2,4,7, and 17 haven't come in for days in the day time and my wife tells me there not coming in most evenings either. Just kind of confused, haven't changed my setup at all or turned the rotor, is it just the weather? Thats all i can think because of all the melting snow? anyone having the same issue?
