Why is the Cadillac Escalade so popular for thieves?

Woohoo! I'm number one! I so much loved that car..22,000$ for 160hp aint to shabby. The hoodlums loved to steal those! mine was only broken into once thankfully..
I think Honda Civic has been at the top of the rankings for about the last 10 or 15 years.
Apparently, the older models are most stolen because they are used for parts. My wife has a 2001 and I often wonder if someday, we may come out of the house or shopping mall and find it gone.

Isn't that what Tony Soprano drove in The Sopranos?
I find it interesting that most of the vehicles are between 5 to 10 years old. That tells me they may be being stolen for parts.
TKG26 2010-12-16, 01:35 PM Honda: Fast and the furious. tuner car of the 90's
Cadillac Escalade: every single RAP video has used them for the last 10 years it seems. Along with the honda one of the most Pimped rides of the last 10 years or more
I suppose im profiling car theives as SpeedTV,MTV watching teenagers...

Let me guess, you are between the 18-25 age group, single with no kids? Practical this car is not, and I bloody well don't see the fascination considering the insurance that people are paying. I sound like am getting old here....now where is that crown vic :)
TKG26 2010-12-16, 01:44 PM Today:Late 30s 3 kids 2 pets.... I bought the car in 2000....so at the time i almost fit your demographic :)
Today we have a 2004 4dr civic with a 2005 kia sorento.. :(
ScaryBob 2010-12-16, 02:08 PM I missed the detail that most of these are also sports models. I remember those Hondas now, the most dangerous cars to drive with the highest mortality and insurance rates. Do I *really* want one of those? An Escalade would be nice but way out of my price range. It's also interesting that these cars are the least desirable to some people due to safety or environmental concerns but wanted by people who are willing to steal them. That certainly tends to profile people who want to own these vehicles.
TKG26 2010-12-16, 02:37 PM just like guns. Honda's don't kill people,people kill people :)

If it's easy to hotwire and can be used to transport the goods that are stolen in a home breakin, it is a very desirable vehicle.
gobisbay 2010-12-16, 05:00 PM Almost every vehicle sold today has an immobilizer. Those were virtually non-existent 10 years ago. That is the biggest reason most stolen cars are from the early 2000s. Although many are stolen for parts, which is why very popular vehicles (especially customized ones) are stolen often. In Atlantic Canada, Neons are near the top of the list (anybody who owned one probably wonders why anyone would steal it).
In another 10 years, it will be very difficult to steal a vehicle unless you're extremely skilled (of course, 20% of vehicles stolen now due to the owner leaving it running and unlocked).
immobilizer: That's why today, if they wish to steal a vehicle from your driveway, they often break into the house instead and use the key left near the entrance....

You're making the assumption that everyone leaves their keys near the entrance? LOL
DSgamby 2010-12-16, 05:41 PM some leave it in the entrance. lol

Actually minivans are extremely popular for thieves because they're great for cargo and they're just so damn average that people don't assume they're used for illegal activities.
If the people in charge of these lists actually compiled them properly and didn't just repeat the same models in different years, I bet you'd see Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager appear in the top 10.

Mounties in Nanaimo are giving out steering-wheel locks to owners of the most commonly stolen cars, in an attempt to reduce auto crime.
Dubbed Operation Lock It or Lose It, Nanaimo RCMP and ICBC are handing out the anti-theft devices to anyone who owns a pre-2001 Honda Civic, Dodge Caravan or Plymouth Voyager.
These are cars top the list of most stolen vehicles in B.C., said RCMP spokesman Const. Gary O’Brien
mr weather 2010-12-17, 08:26 AM It is/was common knowledge that nearly every Chrysler product built in the 1990's could be started by jamming a large screwdriver in the ignition and turning.
A lot of the higher-end models often end up in a shipping container and halfway to Russia before the ink dries on the police report.
Thankfully neither of my vehicles is on the list!

It's well known that some cars are less safe than others due to design. Combine that with an large engine and immature driver and you have an organ donor machine. I agree that a person needs to do something stupid to cause and automobile accident. Just like with guns, some cars make it easier to kill or be killed.

Well then if they want to steal it they just have to remove the club and fill it with gas. Its always on E
