AutoHD shouldn't make any difference as all it did was remap the channel numbers. Have you called Rogers?

Haven't had a chance to call since my schedule's too busy right now for a tech visit. Hopefully in a few days.

AutoHD shouldn't make any difference as all it did was remap the channel numbers.

That's the funny thing though. All channels were fine, including HD. New firmware arrived, no problems, rock steady on all channels, including HD.

AutoHD started a few days later. HD channels are unwatchable.

I just got a Cisco 4642HD yesterday and I must say I like the Auto HD feature.

We can do what we did before with the SA SD box and don't have to memorize or dial into channels in the 500 range. It's a no-brainer.

I see how it could be a problem for people with PVRs but for this HD newbie, it's great.

I have read the whole thread but have yet to see this mentioned - Auto HD should be good for your HDTV. I'm not sure if all manufacturers have this warning, but my Samsung LN46C630 manual states:

Wide screen format LCD Displays (16:9, the aspect ratio of the screen width to height) are primarily designed to view wide screen format full-motion video. The images displayed on them should primarily be in the wide screen 16:9 ratio format, or expanded to fill the screen if your model offers this feature and the images are constantly moving. Displaying stationary graphics and images on screen, such as the dark sidebars on nonexpanded standard format television video and programming, should be limited to no more than 5% of the total television viewing per week.

Avoid displaying still images (such as jpeg picture files) or still image elements (such as TV channel logos, panorama or 4:3 image format, stock or news bars at screen bottom etc.) on the screen. Constant displaying of still pictures can cause ghosting of LCD screen, which will affect image quality.

While 5% is a very conservative number and likely impossible to achieve, Auto HD should minimize it without me even doing anything.

im not shure if this falls under new channels, but my parents have always had basic or cable plus, tsn has always been in SD wit their package, then i went over 2 days ago, and the tv was on, i was flipping through and noticed tsn is hd now, they live in mississauga, formerly maclean hunter cable territory, tsn was only hd when u subscribe to a sports theme pack, they don't. what i also noticed is tsn is now autohd, so its hd on channel 30 now, which means maybe they lifted the carriage requirement for tsn hd or they laxed it now? interesting

TSN is now AutoHD in Toronto too - wasn't that way before. There are a bunch of autoHDs in the channels above 28 now too - for example Discovery. Perhaps they can AutoHD the channels you subscribe to, where before they only AutoHD'd (mostly) the basic channels. Yes I realize that TSN-HD (and Discovery) are usually part of the extra pack (which I pay for)...

Tsn-hd is in free preview until April 30 and auto hd as well in London.

Speculating here maybe part of deal with Bell to make TSN HD part of a lower package as part of the other recently added Bell HD channels.

Unless they're planning a permanent change to bring TSN HD as part of a tier package, i think the auto-HD is just temporary to ensure that customers who don't regularly follow Rogers news will be able to take advantage of the free preview.

Thing is, it affected a bunch of channels above channel 28 that were not AutoHD before - like Discovery (at least for me).

That's odd, Discovery has always been auto-HD for me.

It may have been this way for a while, but I certainly recall several optimizations last year where I showed my clients AutoHD functionality and Discovery was not AutoHD, especially for people who had not purchased the HD Pak. Now, it's possible this changed months ago or perhaps even longer since I don't look at this regularly, but if you read earlier posts in this thread you'll see that most channels outside of basic were not AutoHD.

Discovery was Auto HD right when it became HD last year on Rogers. Same thing with Bravo and Space. I'm also pretty sure all the somewhat recent HD channels were auto HD with the exception of Spike. (I'm talking about Comedy, Teletoon, BNN, CTVNN)

As for TSN HD, Rogers is still listing it as part of the HD VIP pack, or HD Specialty pack on their website, which, granted, isn't always up to date. I tend to think yyzlhr is correct in thinking that this is a temporary auto HD, and when the free preview ends, they'll mention on the guide/info about it being part of the above HD packs and to tune into 506 to view it after ordering it.

You could be right that this changed at the time of all those HD channel additions last year. There are still some "anomalies":

The following are not AutoHD (for me)

APTN
TCM
A&E
TSN2

APTN East is a different schedule than APTN HD. That is why no Auto HD.

And TCM depending on the movie, you can't see it in HD in Canada. You can see the SD version but not the HD version. Although this only happens less the 3% of the time

MCIBUS: Your post has nothing to do with AutoHD, the topic of this thread. HD rights are discussed in a separate TCM thread.

alebowgm Thanks for reminding me why APTN is "special".

57, with all due respect, TCM may not be Auto HD because of the reason MCIBUS said. Not saying for sure that is the reason, but its a possibility. Rogers argues the content isn't the same on both channels, and therefore doesn't apply it.

I was refferring to why TCM isn't Autio HD because of that very issue.

Sorry, you're both right. My brain must have been in neutral when reading the post.
