: SD channels now Re-Direct to HD (AutoHD) Read Post 1.
alebowgm 2010-12-03, 02:21 PM 57, see post #63 (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showpost.php?p=1184571&postcount=63)... what I should had said is that Rogers says claims impossible to turn Auto HD off for those who don't want it... yes they have the SD alternative in the 100+ range, but for people who don't want to tune that high, they are SOL...
That's a whole different story isn't it?
canucktunes 2010-12-03, 02:33 PM Just got an automated call from Rogers about this. It is now available in Kanata, at no extra cost.
MCIBUS 2010-12-03, 05:02 PM Got the same call about 1/2 hour ago. Don't like this at all. I should have the option to except or not except it. I don't like being "forced' to except somethng I don't like.
There not even playing 'fair'? Why is it that all the Rogers Sportnet channels get AUTO-HD but not TSN/2? Rogers favouring their channels over the competion yet again?
alebowgm 2010-12-03, 05:05 PM The Score DOES have auto-hd, its just tsn 1/2 that doesn't...
MCIBUS 2010-12-03, 05:09 PM ^ But why not TSN/2, To me they are dissing CTVglbemedia?
Although I don't care for spoprts, if your going to do this for HD channels, then do it for all the SD-HD combo's treat everyone fairly, not favor one over another?
alebowgm 2010-12-03, 05:12 PM Go back in this thread to post #70 when this was first brought up and discussed... the reason is there is no reason outside of the fact that MAYBE TSN/TSN2 isn't freely available in HD to all subs such as Sportsnets and The Score are, so they opted not to include it... if that is the truth, then a channel is only available for Auto-HD IF they are available in the 2~99 range AND the station is available WITHOUT additional subscriptions in the 5xx range.
MCIBUS 2010-12-03, 05:36 PM Well which ever the case maybe I still think we should have the option to turn it on or off, as to why Rogers hasn't offered that option I'm not sure why.
Perhaps when its available to all of Rogers Ontario & Rogers Atlantic they might give us this option or at least hoping they will,
alebowgm 2010-12-03, 05:38 PM See post #99 and #101... although I do agree with you, the Rogers CSR I spoke to said the option is not available and won't be coming...
gzero 2010-12-03, 05:53 PM Simple explanation; TSN and TSNHD are in separate packages.
There's also no reason to have an "option" for Auto-HD or not. You can always view the SD channel, just not in the place you could previously.
Auto-HD is great for the vast majority of people - it will take them to the HD channel on their HD STBs on their HDTVs. Those (few) people who have "off combinations" like an HDSTB and an SDTV, or a desire to record SD, will simply have to learn the channel numbers for that.
Any time that options are added (like the option to turn a feature on/off), this slows down the STB and uses RAM, etc. Better to keep it simple.
You just can't please some people. ;)
MCIBUS 2010-12-03, 06:16 PM Why do I get the feeling we'll see this eventally be available on all providers be it Rogers, BTV or what have you?
As well as a easier way to have a channel be it SD or HD(depending on your box?) As i have both HD & SD boxes the SD is still on 18.as an example(in Ottawa) CHCH 18 the IPG SD # and on HD Box 18 HD # IPG. So when they referr to the channel you just tune it in be it SD or HD.
The more I look at it now, I'm starting to see what your saying 57. Still would like the option to turn it on or off, but we can't have everything we want.
Got my update today, though to the best of my knowledge I never got a phonecall. Did get an email from them in my junk folder. I guess I'm not important enough for a call?;)
Rogers TV HD is gone here in Brampton. It was listed for 1-2 days but now channel 10 stays in SD and channel 510 is not available.
One thing I don't like about this feature. I have a reminder timer set for Channel 518 at 11PM to watch the CTV news. I used to use channel up and channel down to see what's on City and Global. I've set the timer several times but it always reverts to Channel 8 and although City is only one channel away, Global is not. Not a big deal, but a bit of a pain.
Paolo 2010-12-05, 08:46 AM I don't see how auto HD would need any extra cost? channels are all pretty much frequencies in the Mhz range, but we just use numbers to make it easier to rememer them or tune them.
its just mapping of frequencies to a physical number on a dial.
on SD boxes, it maps the frequency of the SD channel to the number.
on HD boxes, it maps the frequency of the HD chanenl to the number.
They are not utilizing any extra bandwidth for this, its just channels re-mapped.
Eventually when they get more HD feed, I see this as going to promote the HD channels even more.
dheian 2010-12-06, 07:18 PM Still having the stuttering/pixellation problems with the sub-100 channels.
Could this be because we're got an SDTV? The numbers I mentioned earlier (level's at 1 dBmV and the S/N at 37) are still the same.
Do I need to get a tech in? We seem to have the problem once a year, but this time it started immediately after the autohd switch and only on those sub-100 channels.
Sometime I wonder if it's the weather...we're in an apartment building and I notice the Rogers techs often leave the wire box on the outside wall open.
wlmckay 2010-12-12, 12:55 PM We received the AutoHD last week and since then, when we tune to US networks (Fox, ABC, CBS etc) we get a black screen. It seems to work fine for Canadian feeds and the sports channels. Technician not available until Tuesday!
wlmckay, Welcome, have you performed a cold reboot of the PVR? Have you checked your signal strength and S/N ratio on the affected channels?

dheian 2010-12-13, 12:21 AM 8300HD:
As I posted elsewhere, ever since the AutoHD switch, the HD channels have been breaking up like mad (basically unwatchable stuttering and pixels every 5-10 seconds) while the SD versions of the channels have been fine.
Checking the levels and signal strength, they seem okay, I think, based on the FAQ here. The level's at 2 dBmV and s/n 37dB. Is the s/n too high? It says 35's good, so are the extra 2 dB's killing my signal? On pg 15 of the diagnostics, chan5's show about 598 overflows in orange and pink while chan6 has 25 overflows.
Just wondering too: We're currently using the HD box on an SD TV. Hopefully Xmas will bring HD to the house. Is there any chance that I'm noticing this after the AutoHD switch because the PVR has to do extra work to downconvert the signals?
