I've found that it's hit and miss as to whether it will detect new files on a NAS on its own, or I have to reboot so that it rescans. Anyway, a reboot should do it.

I also noticed it will rescan after I power it down from the front panel (holding the on/off button for 5 seconds).

I was wondering how well it would work for short home movie clips. Most of my home movie files are 30 seconds to 2 minutes long. Can you set the WD Live to play through them or would you need to play each file individually?

Put them in the same folder and use the repeat option, you can set it to play the clips sequentially in the folder.
