Muskoka on 23. I hope that doesn't impact my WPXJ on 23.

Muskoka and Batavia would both be deep fringe to you, so you'll get a surprise each time you tune in:p

Man, I hope not. WPXJ comes in rock solid most of the time. It's an everyday channel for me. I might have the opposite problem of most people -- too much CHCH!

My combo antenna doesn't pick up much off the back so I'll be all right, I hope. Once I get my router, I'll definitely see if I can catch it when I'm pointing north.

CHCH TV3 is on the Global tower near Midland. The distance is 150 km with hilly terrain between the Midland tower and the CN Tower. The peak elevation between the Midland tower and the base of the CN Tower is 222 metres. WPXJ is 139 km with a clear path to the CN Tower.

I used Google Earth to get the distances and path profiles. The elevations are at the tower bases. The radiation center of the analog channel 67 transmitter is 510 meters which puts it above the peak terrain point but at a distance of 116 km. At best, Toronto would get a diffracted signal. Unless you can receive the CHCH channel 67 signal or Global on channel 7 you are not likely to experience interference from CHCH digital on channel 23.

Thanks GeorgeMX! That was a lot of investigating. Once I add a rotor, I'll put up a post of the real-world experience of attempting to pull in the new CHCH on 23 from my location. I'll be surprised if it comes in.

I like having ION, qubo, and ION Life on WPXJ available 24/7 if possible.

Does anyone know if they have posted a timeframe for them to go digital tomorrow???

CHCH 51-1 Alvinston ? Where does that signal come from?

The transmitter is located there, approx. half way between London and Sarnia in Lambton Co.

Yes, the most recent update is CH-51.1 on AUG 22, 2011 and posted in post #320.

I knew that...I was wondering if anyone has seen any time posting on when the transition will occur???

I don't think they can predict the exact 'time' with so many variable engineering factors pending. I would think they would shutdown analog at August 21st at midnight and work their way through the issues regarding the tower/equipment throughout the early morning hours of August 22nd.

Do you ever get CHCH analog or did you get any analog or digital CHCH reception before the transitions began?

I got CHCH analogue in a very snowy state....But they are predicting an INCREASE in their coverage area post-transition, so I may just pick them up...if only at night. We'll see soon!

If it was very snowy in analog,.. then I'd not expect too much success, but in your case it will certainly be interesting to see how much their predicted coverage area translates into reality. Please keep us informed on/after August 22nd.;)

CHCH 51 may have moved their analog antenna to a lower height to facilitate installing a new antenna at full height. At any rate, I don't predict a lot of reception issues in London. There will likely be a dead zone in the lee of the Byron "mountain", across low lying sections of south east London.

Here's what gives me hope here. TVfool gives me -15NM for TVO 32 in Windsor and I have a lock on them with 3 bars. For CHCH 51-1, it gives me -14NM....if that is accurate, I will get a lock on 51-1....

51-1 is 83.6 miles from me with only 1 edge. 32-1 is 53 miles from me and 2 edge! By the way, TV Fool didn't even show CHCH recievable for me on their analogue transmission.

TV Fool predicts a fairly substantial signal increase for CHCH 51 here. That's LOS at 34 miles, though I'm not convinced it's actually LOS at my location. It's probably closer to 1 edge.

I think I saw that they are supposed to increase the height of their stick quite substantially, which may be why they are showing up 1 edge for us!

And cranking out 190 kW's doesn't hurt either. Compared to the wimpy 19 kW's for TVO 32-1 Windsor.

CHCH-TV-51 is 64.6 mi from here, though we will be getting more signal than those off to the northwest from the directional antenna. The pattern from RabbitEars (chch-dt-51 (http://www.rabbitears.info/oddsandends.php?request=ant_pat&ant_id=8471&rotation=0&erp=190)), shows us at around 150kW. Detroit/Windsor area gets 60-100kw or so. Most of the time it's WLAJ-DT that takes out 51 here. Currently have to point the antenna at it to have a chance at a semi decent picture.

There is also the bazillion wind turbines the CHCH signal has to travel through before arriving here. Analog 51 is already very "fluttery" here from nearby turbines scattering the signals, along with almost every other station from the NW-NE. Incredible amount of TV signal damage here due to these things.

I am also concerned about CHCH using 23 from Muskoka. Being all the way up in Stouffville, I can get CHCH 67 and Global 7 from Midland, with fair regularity. I've already wondered how much of an impact Global 7 has on my inability to get a semi reliable WBBZ.

If I lose ION once CHCH's transmitter goes live on 23, then I'll possibly be losing out on 4 channels (ION), and getting a useless duplicate (or nothing) instead. Even worse if WBBZ failure is caused by Global 7 (then it's 8 unique gone for 2 useless dups).

CHCH-TV-2 (London) channel 51 switches to digital 51.1 today. Once the transition is complete, I'll check in with forum readers with my reception results.
So far this morning, it's still a snowy analogue picture for me. ;)
