I bought a 34HF83 last month at Future Shop and got quite a good deal on it. However I'm somewhat disappointed in it. I have some geometry issues which I understand is pretty much guarenteed with tube-based sets. My main concern is there are these sort of smudges behind the front layer of glass. It dosen't effect the picture much, but you do notice it while watching something with a bright background.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Not sure if I have the same problem but I have noticed a shadow on the sides of my 34HF83. It's only really noticable when watching HD broadcasts and especially when watching hockey with the bright ice surface. At first, I thought I had dust on the screen and tried to clean it off with a duster. Not sure if it's a warrenty issue or not though. Anyone know?
Cheers,

I also noticed that, but it is not as annoying as two horizontal lines present in all Sony direct view TV sets, including the 34" wide screen. I had a chance to compare 34" Toshiba, Panasonic, JVC and Sony in the same store and to be honest the overall quality of Toshiba picture was the best. But there is still this annoying horizontal jerkinig problem in 83 series Toshiba sets I reported earlier. I believe the jerking problem exists in pretty much all 83 series Toshiba HDTVs. At least as of today I haven't seen any non-defective set. Your TV jerks in HDTV mode every minute after you turn it on, then every two minutes and so on. The jerking disappears in 1-2 hours of continuous work, but if you switch your set off and let it cool down the jerking appears again.

Wow, my Sony must be counterfeit then because I don't have those 2 lines. I am so disappointed
Try looking at your screen from a side angle while it's turned off. It's easier to notice if there's some natural light coming through a window. I can see what appears to be smudges on the top right and left corners of my screen, on the inside of the glass.
After looking around the internet a bit I've noticed quite a few people are having this issue with these particular sets(30HF83, 34HF83, 34HFX83).
There's a thread about it over at AVS about it right now... http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=398696
I feel like asking for a replacement, but I'm worried that I may get something worse. Plus it's so freaking heavy, I can't drag replacement sets back and forth to my house until I get it right. I bought this particular set because IMO it really is the best bang for the buck out there. I'm at a loss, I just don't know what to do.

34HFX83 owner checking in - Gaga, I have had this TV for about 4 months and absolutly no sign of the jerking you describe. TV was purchased from and calibrated by John Golitsis. I have the Rogers SA3100HD, and watch on HD channels about 10-15 hrs per week. Just wanted to let everyone know that not all of these TV's are affected by this apparent defect.

Yes same here, no HD glitch. I haven't had a HD box for a while but I did have it for 2 weeks or so and there was no problem with the image. In my case it was the box itself that I had to take back as it kept rebooting on it's own and freezing.
The true 1080i HD was awesome on it. Only 1 thing is that you got diagonal lines for a sec when u tuned to a hd channel from a non hd channel. That Im sure is normal for any set. I can't wait till I get a box again. I want the cable company to get issues worked on and more channels before I take the plunge again.
I emailed Toshiba last week and they are having a service technician come out. I really hope there is something that can be done. Is it possible that he can remove the front layer glass to clean behind it?
