downbeat 2011-08-31, 02:14 AM Analog CFCN (CTV, Ch. 4) and CIAN (CTV Two, Ch. 13) are both off the air, since sometime after midnight.
At last check, analogs CICT (Global, Ch. 2), CKAL (Citytv,. Ch. 5) and CBRT (CBC, Ch. 9) are still on.
And CBRFT (SRC, Ch. 16) should see no service change whatsoever.
Mike FM 2011-08-31, 02:49 AM CFRN up on 12 DT, analog gone.
CITV still on 13 and 47 DT, analog long gone
CBC English on analog 5 DT 42
CITY on analog 51 low power DT 17 full power
OMNI analog 56 low power DT 44 full power
CTS on 30 DT full power analog long gone.
Access / CTV Two gone
CBC French still on analog 11, no DT
hwgasdfasdf 2011-08-31, 02:57 AM Yup, it's back, but with the same breakups they had before they shut the transmitter off (because they were 100% ready to go!)
Watching TSReader at the same time as a TV shows that the breakups are indeed little bursts of continuity errors. Is everyone else seeing this as well? I'm 99% sure the problem is on their end.
And yes, the audio sync has been HORRID on CBC all day - not to mention the level going up and down drastically, and commercials in completely the wrong places during the news. Apparently confidence monitoring isn't something many stations are actually doing!
Hey CTV - If you don't have any transport stream monitoring equipment, I can rent you a box - ASI, ATSC, ITU-B QAM, DVB-S/S2/DSNG, Turbo Coded 8psk or Qpsk, DVB-T, DVB-C - whatever interface you need, I have a card for it, or a way to get it to ASI! REASONABLE RATES / HOUR!
downbeat 2011-08-31, 03:28 AM We're batting .500 here in Calgary when it comes to timekeeping from our local DTV stations.
Only PSIP data from CICT, CFCN and CKCS are showing the correct time.
The other three are off by hours.
tripod 2011-08-31, 09:44 AM Digital Only
7.1 CISA Global
13.1 CFCN-5 CTV
17.1 CJIL Miracle
46.1 CKAL-1 CityTV
Analog Only
10 CBRT-6 CBC
23 CBXFT-3 SRC
It looks as though Lethbridge has completed the Digital Transition (for now, we'll see what happens next year for CBC or SRC).
downbeat 2011-09-01, 01:34 AM Just noticed Citytv CKAL-TV analog Channel 5 is already off the air.
downbeat 2011-09-01, 01:59 AM CBC Calgary analog CBRT-TV Channel 9 just went off in the middle of an athletics program.
downbeat 2011-09-01, 02:01 AM Finally, Global Calgary analog CICT-TV Channel 2 just went off in the middle of a sportscast — the local news wasn't even over yet!
And that's all from Calgary, folks.
All local DTV stations have been operating for a few weeks.
The only remaining analog is CBRFT-TV on Channel 16.
Mike FM 2011-09-01, 02:01 AM Both CBC in Edmonton analog are gone.
56 analog remains.
Global on 47 left the air at 12:02.
Mike FM 2011-09-01, 02:04 AM Global left the air at 12:02 just to have CBC French fire up and re-map to 11.1 seconds later.
That's it, all of Edmonton is digital now.
Merry Christmas to all and to all, goodnight!
j0dest3r 2011-09-01, 02:15 PM LOL! I was just going to tune into the Global noon news with my UHF ANT at work. Oh well CBC news will have to do lol!
Finally nice to have it all done!
audacity 2011-09-01, 02:53 PM I checked again prior to going to work this morning and the 12.1 signal was still the same (higher quality) as I reported last night. So far, it looks like CTV changed something on the transmission end.
Another hypothesis is that weather conditions allowed for better "tropo" for the past 24-hours, and those conditions weren't present a week ago when I was experiencing issues with 12.1, but it is a weak hypothesis because the signal from 13.1 (also VHF-Hi from the same tower) was not exhibiting the same signal problems. I imagine that the "tropo" for both channels with be either good or poor at the same time.
05snopro440 2011-09-01, 03:10 PM Before the required digital transition date, CFRN was doing some testing and their signal quality did indeed decrease. I got that information from CFRN directly. What you get now is what it will stay like.
Mordak 2011-09-02, 10:02 PM Is anyone else noticing that the CBC on 5.1 in Edmonton isn't as reliable since they switched from 1080i to 720p? I am getting frequent dropouts and errors over the last two days, and can't think of what else may have changed.
j0dest3r 2011-09-02, 10:13 PM I will check it out later and let you know. I have 5.1 on the downstairs TV.
audacity 2011-09-04, 11:41 AM Is anyone else noticing that the CBC on 5.1 in Edmonton isn't as reliable since they switched from 1080i to 720p? I am getting frequent dropouts and errors over the last two days, and can't think of what else may have changed.
I have my HTPC recording stuff on CBC all the time and when there is a reception loss it logs the event (SageTV). I haven't seen any log entries about problems with CBC Edmonton.
envirogeek 2011-09-04, 12:36 PM Is there anyone in the know who can say whether CFRN is firing on all cylinders yet? I'm curious that we're not seeing really good reports of success with CFRN.
I realize this is a very small data set, and that we are not perhaps operating under optimum conditions of distance and antennas, but - why are we all able to receive CITV, from the same tower, from the same height, with the same ERP, and a lower TV Fool NM(dB) - yet not have good success with CFRN? Do we all need better antennas for 204 MHz (CFRN) versus 210 MHz (CITV)?
We have 4 different users (audacity, j0dest3r, envirogeek, staeit) reporting not so good results with CFRN, with 4 different antennas, from 3 different directions, at distances of 10/31/42 miles.
Enquiring minds want to know...
Mike FM 2011-09-04, 10:09 PM You might as well add my name to that list. I thought this new transmit antenna had a slight vertical element to it and I've kept this in the back of my mind while I'm moving my rabbit ears around.
CITV works great, rabbit ears extended fully, horizontally - great signal strength. When I start folding the antennas upward, the signal degrades fast but RN is working the exact opposite way.
I know this sounds crazy because both transmitters are going into the same antenna but it's almost as if CFRN has more signal on the vertical component. I can have my rabbit ears straight up for CFRN and have 70% signal strength, indoors, completely hiding Looma with concrete.
Transmit phase issue? Linearity problems?
It's just very odd.
envirogeek 2011-09-05, 05:49 PM I sent an email enquiry to CFRN earlier today. Will just have to wait for a reply.
downbeat 2011-09-07, 02:43 AM CBC Calgary now displays as CBRT-DT instead of CBC.
