Just as an FYI — CBC Calgary's website now acknowledges CBRT-DT is available over the air. Of course, there's no explanation on how to get the signal … I suppose that's what we're for. :)

tanker and j0dest3r, please use the following thread: CBC/SRC DTV Transition Status (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=123571)

Now that CBC has successful switched their OTA signal to digital, does anyone have information on when CTV are going to make the switch?

CFRN and Global will be going live around the deadline Aug 2011. Global is already live but on a temp setup about half power or so.

Whatever the problem was with the sound, it is now working absolutely fine! Well done CBC engineering!! Now all that is needed is a contribution from the CBC Calgary studios as a main production centre in order to get CBRFT-DT approved for ongoing OTA transmission. I wonder??? ;)
Seriously - CBC already has an HD microwave link from the local studios, how much cost can be involved to adding the French channel to it and re-using the 1.5 Kw UHF transmitter once it becomes available next year from the English service???

All that is missing is getting an HD signal from the originating station in Edmonton. CBC probably doesn't want to pay for this new infrastructure, therefore the most likely (if unreasonable) explanation for their current DTV conversion policy.

downbeat - My feeling is that since a CBC English feed exists in the Calgary studios, why wouldn't an Edmonton SRC feed already exist or be very easy to add? Network studios such as Calgary most likely have access to a number of feeds and after all HD is the new standard for both cable and satellite in any case. I got the impression that it's purely a case of trend setting or otherwise CBC policy!?

I agree that it is a case of the CBC making a policy and sticking with it in all markets. Interestingly according to the CRTC Report Cost Estimate of Digital Television (DTV) Conversion for Canada (http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/publications/reports/dtv0903.htm), it would cost about 230 thousand dollars to convert CBRFT. Interestingly it is estimated that the conversion of CBXFT (Edmonton) will cost the SRC 3.2 million dollars. Now maybe only doing CBRFT would cost more as that cost assumes that CBXFT has been converted, but some of that also comes from moving CBXFT from channel 11 to 42.

Now that CBC HD transmitters have started broadcasting in Calgary and Edmonton there is one more thing that needs to happen before the channel is truly useful to me: I need guide data.

Yes, I can hack it in, but to get things to work "by default" in PVR software that licenses the Zap2It data (e.g. SageTV, BeyondTV) then Zap2It needs to be updated to include the new stations.

I've already done this for the Edmonton station (CBXT-DT), but I imagine if a few more people do it for their new stations it would spur them to get this stuff updated.

So, if you have a moment, go to this URL (http://www.zap2it.com/services/site/help/zap-faq-contact-channel,0,5059403.htmlstory) and fill it out telling them about the new CBC transmitters.

I did this a week or so ago myself. They said it has been submitted to their DB team to be updated.

I just got back from Calgary and have to say, what a mess the CBRT PSIP is.
Is anyone else annoyed that when you tune 21 in, it just shows up as 'Calgary'?
I hate to tell someone else how to do their job but if CBXT Edmonton gets it right, you'd think CBRT would too.

Are you referring to audio dropouts on the Calgary's CBRT station? I ask because I watched part of a hockey game last night and the audio was dropping out every few seconds. I watched a bit of the CBC News at Noon today and noticed that the audio dropouts were still present, although not happening as often. The signal strength to my Sony KDL-52W3000 is showing 98%. Is anybody else experiencing this problem?

Thanks

Visor - My earlier posted comment was concerning CBRFT not CBRT. Yes CBC are aware of this CBRT-DT issue and it is thought to be associated with the STL. CBC engineering are working to resolve the problem. You may have also noticed pixellation on occasions.

Thanks for the clarification, Billsmith. Except, what is an "STL"? I don't see this defined in the FAQ, and Google search comes up with "Standard Template Libary", which I don't think is what you're referring to. :p

Thanks,

According to my source at CTV Lethbridge the new transmitters for the tower (a few flat deck semi trailers of HD goodies) are currently parked at the tower SW of the city ready to install. Starting next week???? But unfortunately they don't have any HD cameras yet.

CITYTV is fine in the NE. Strong signal, no out of sync. I don't remember I have had out of sync audio/video on CITYTV in the past.
