Also, CKAL is channel 5.

I think he meant CJAL (ACCESS Edmonton on 9) not CKAL (CityTV Calgary on 5).

roger1818 - Yes - Originally - I thought the guy was confused but now I think he is not. I believe that he's referring to Calgary since it is closer to the border (<350 Miles) or neighbouring markets as you say and that is why I suspect that it may have something to do with the US.

Yes - it may also be that CJAL Edmonton will need to go from channel 9 also - but he still maintains that ACCESS analog transmitters will continue on the air past the analog switch off date! I am going to be very interested to see what actually happens on this upcoming August 31st!

23skidoo - yes - Calgary will lose VHF Channels 2 thru' 9 and I am also not disappointed with this move. I have purpose UHF antennas and a cut channel 12 - 13 antenna for ACCESS only. This arrangement really will be better here in Calgary.

Has any one contacted the CRTC to see if Access will be allowed to be on analog past Aug 31?

The local station is still awaiting delivery of the new transmitter! :( However, the DTV HD STL microwave link is now in place and commissioned. I hope that that CBC can still make the end of the month on air date! I guess that the corporation's top brass must have great faith in their local station guys! However in my estimation, they are great guys!

Interesting quote from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Access_(TV_channel)

As of February 2011, neither station has begun broadcasting in digital. CTV, which owns the station, is in a dispute with the CRTC as to whether the station's Edmonton and Calgary transmitters must be transitioned to digital because this is a satellite undertaking.

Maybe CIAN and CJAL will stay on the air in analog after all - It appears that CTV simply do not want to shut them off? The station in Edmonton appears confident that they will stay on!!??

I don't know when this happened, maybe today is the first day, I noticed today the CFCN local news at 6pm today was still in 4:3 format but the 2 side bars had a blueish graphic added instead of the plain black letter box sides. Perhaps they are getting ready to produce the 6pm news in 16x9?

Nice! that is great news~~!! Does anyone know if they have been doing some set upgrades in Calgary and Edmonton? When Global went they kind of all went on a similar timeline.

March 17 2011 CKAL-DT 49 (49.1) seems to be off the Air today? Anyone else?

Didn't see any problem on 5.1 CKAL-DT (real channel - 49) Calgary today.

Calgary CBC in HD starting April 1st (http://www.cbc.ca/calgary/community/mt/2010/10/cbc-calgary-in-hd.html)

The page mentions Shaw Digital specifically, but it would seem to make sense that they'd switch OTA at the same time, wouldn't it?

I think they kind of have to according to the CRTC however, Telus TV does have CFRN Edmonton HD whereas they are not OTA yet. Shaw isn't picking it up until they HAVE TO. That way they can up sell you on HD Plus to get a CTV station. Shh!

The Channel 21 CBRT-DT provisional 1.5 Kw English service transmitter will be switched through to it's antenna at the CBC mast and should be radiating test signals next week! The external mask filter has been fine tuned and the STL M/W has also been commissioned. This is a heads up to start scanning the band soon folks! :D

Fantastic! It seems like we've been waiting forever for another station to go ATSC in Alberta!

Sorry if this has been asked before, but does CITV Edmonton have any plans to boost their power output on their HD Channel. I am unable to receive it due to my distance from transmitter/antenna.

Thanks

Glenn

VE6DKK - During the next 2 months the plan is for CITV-DT on Channel 13 and CFRN-DT on Channel 12 to be switched on. From what I understand the combiner was ordered only 2 weeks ago and the antenna also is on order.
I did hear that CITV-DT may have an initial temporary service from their existing Channel 13 analog antenna but I'm not sure how this is progressing.
Perhaps Mike FM will maybe kindly fill us in more precisely on timing and details. In any event the new higher powered permanent CITV-DT service will be on Channel 13 VHF Hi at 25 Kw ERP from the "Big Looma" tower. The transitional Channel 47 UHF service from the CITV site in downtown Edmonton will be discontinued once the "Big Looma" site is in full operation.

Just like Bill said... CITV-DT will be moving from 47 physical to 13 physical in August. Both CFRN-DT and CITV-DT final transmitters will be located where they currently are transmitting in analog. 'Big Looma' site SE of Edmonton: 53.22.58N 113.13.01W
Glenn, for where you're located, I'm happy that CITV/CFRN are staying on the Looma site. You should have very little trouble receiving them come September.

April 1st potential launch date for this transmitter. All they are waiting for is the STL from Downtown to Sherwood Park. Haven't seen anything on the spectrum analyzer as 42 is being run into a dummy load instead of the antenna.

On CBRFT Channel 16. The last few days, need to crank up the volume to 100%, and even then, can barely make out what is being said. Same on 2nd television elsewhere in the home. Other stations are normal. Happened before, usually on weekends (technician not available ?).

Must be a local issue, but who to call or email ?
