and Sharp TV

My converter box was able to decode the callsign on 41 using just an indoor antenna, which would lead me to believe that with a good rooftop model it should come in here no problem. Sadly the signal's not strong enough for it to lock.

How long is Global Toronto broadcasting on two channels? My HDHomerun is seeing both 41 and 65 as 41.1.

I really wish they would boost the Oil Springs signal, especially since the Stevenson transmitter has no coverage in Windsor.

Global RF41 (41.1) loud and clear here in Hamilton West Mountain (as to be expected). Global RF6 (6.1) is not even registering...also as expected, since I was getting the analog signal, but with alot of snow.

RF6 may just be a tropo channel in the future...but no worries with RF41 booming in.

I rescanned last night and get two 41.1. There is a definite difference in signal strength between 41 and 65.

Depends where you are in Windsor. My parents in Forest Glade receive it without issues.

Digital signals from Toronto are pretty much impossible for me to get with an indoor antenna here in East Hamilton Mountain. I have one television in my home that is connected with rabbit ears and a loop antenna. I can get channels 11, 15, 17, 23, 36 and sometimes 5. I was hopping that the TV would at least get 19 and 41 as the analog signals on these two channels was not bad. Looks like I am going to have to find a way to connect this TV to my attic mount antenna. For those that rely on OTA reception with an indoor antenna, many people in Hamilton are likely going to find that they can't get much more then 11, 15 and 36.

I figured I'd be able to get Global and TVO because their ERP is higher then what CBC is currently pumping out.

Well there should be a signal there because its within the contour, and looking at Rabbit Ears (http://www.rabbitears.info/contour.php?appid=1283359&map=Y) Forest Glade is in the 'Yellow' likely to receive range. But North of EC Row and West of Ouelette (which arguably is the downtown core of Windsor, and its also the University area of the town) aren't in the contour and other DHCers have noted trouble in South Windsor as well. There isn't adequate coverage in Windsor on CIII-DT-22 and CIII-TV-29 from Oil Springs is the only hope for many unless Shaw boosted the power of the Stevenson transmitter, even marginally by a few kW.

Honestly, in the past for me CIII-TV-29 surprisingly came in better than CIII-TV-22 anyways.

Thanks for all the reception reports regarding CIII Paris Channel 6. :) I've just moved several into their appropriate local reception results threads in order to keep this main thread clearer for reporting Global's many DTV transitions in progress.

If you lose track of where your post has gone, simply go to the DHC Quick Links menu and pull down to "My Posts". Another method is to go to one of your previous posts anywhere on the DHC site and click on your own user name to the left to get to the "Find More Posts By..." menu item.

cheers

Ft.Erie TV55 is gone now. Does anyone from Ft.Erie get 41.1 0r 6.1?

It looks like Global has done a good job of getting their signal to reach Fort Erie. I was watching Global last night with a signal level around 60% with no drop outs. It was only a 1 night test so only time will tell how reliable it will be. Daytime could be a bit more difficult, we'll see.

This is a good opportunity to see how our gear handles a physical/virtual channel conflict...

So we have 65.1/41.1 and 41.1/41.1 - do people see two 41.1s on their tuners? Or just one (I guess hard to tell which one is loaded?), or something else?

For my Sony Bravia, I tried the "Add Digital Channels" scan (with RF65.1 mapped to 41.1) and this failed to add any channels at all. I had to do an "Auto Program" which effectively wipes all channels and starts from scratch -- after that ran, I ended up with a 41.1 from RF41 and a 65.1 with no remap. Both channels were labelled "CIII-HD" which is what my pre-change scan had.

For the Bravia, it's easy to tell which channel is which by going into the menus and chosing the "Signal Diagnostics" item under the "Product Support" heading. The physical channel, as well as a lot of other interesting stats are reported.

For me, the new signal on RF41 is definitely stronger:
RF41: 87/100 bars, 30db SNR, 30% AGC
RF65: 60/100 bars, 25db SNR, 55% AGC

For those of you who know a little more about this sort of stuff, a question. Am I right in assuming that the lower the AGC percentage reported, the easier the TV is finding it to receive a channel?

Yes. AGC stands for Automatic Gain Control, so the weaker the signal, the more gain it applies to do its decoding.

I called Global today to discuss reception in London and they've added a menu option "Press 4 if you are not receiving an acceptable signal from your local transmitter." Doing so took me to someone in engineering who assured me that currently CIII is not running at full power and that I can expect improvement after the 31st.

I hope that is the honest truth.

Just to reiterate my question from earlier: any idea when RF65 is being shut down? The 1st?

I'm just asking because my HDHomerun shows both RF41 and RF65 as CIII 41.1 and I'm not sure how MythTV will handle this if I rescan to add the new Global location.

Me too. It does make sense. They're still running two transmitters even if both are digital. I don't know if they have to lower power to do other conversions, but who knows?

Nothing is for sure for another few days. Wow! Another few days! It seems like we've been waiting forever and now it's here!

I just wanted to say congratulations to Global to have completed the transition in mandated markets.
Whether you're installing a new transmitter, converting an older one, installing microwaves, installing PSIP generators, running wire, applying for licenses, etc... it can all be very daunting. Some of us complain why channel numbers are the way they are but don't understand the time, man power, technical, political and financial factors involved in an enormous project as such. So to the hard working men and women involved in this transition process, raise a glass and offer a toast.
Cheers to the Global transmission techs.

I'll second that Mike. I can't personally speak for the others, but the Stevenson transmitter works great!

Just need some EPG...

It works great? It may physically work great but it seems under powered from the sounds of it to me...

I'm also impressed by Global being so proactive - it's a real commitment to OTA that their competitors don't seem interested in matching. Kudos to all involved!

Now, that said there is some room for improvement - my reception of Global Halifax (6km from transmitter) being 26 of 100 bars, SNR 18 dB, AGC 55% does suggest perhaps another underpowered transmitter. Don't let your good work go to waste or hurt your reputation for service by cheaping out on the ERP...average 410W seems kinda low to me!
