: CTV & CTV2 DTV Transition Status (closed)
roger1818 2010-09-08, 09:47 PM I take it that subsim isn't a priority either on HD programming which is literally almost every show.
There is no HD /A\ so there is no channel to simusub to. I wonder what percentage of people watch programs in HD. Not everyone who has an HDTV has an HD source (either OTA or with an HD box) and even those who do often tune to the SD channel numbers. It all makes having an HD channel less important.

Oh I'm aware there's no HD channel as I was commenting on no plans to go HD. I would think it's a little bit of a priority for a for-profit corporation that might be interested in advertising dollars and considering CTV is subsim freaks that wish everything was by their rules I would think this be a bigger priority but than again thats why shows are on /A\ channel and not CTV.

Very true. They put second rate programming on /A\ and wonder why the stations don't make money. Unless they can turn them around, they may still shut them down (they would never sell them as they would be embarrassed when someone else makes them profitable).

I rarely watch SD on my HD set. I also choose Blu-ray over DVD, if available.

That doesn't surprise me. People on here are quite educated. I am talking about the masses who just buy a TV and plug it in.
Jase88 2010-09-09, 03:37 PM I wouldn't agree that /A\ Channel presents second-rate programming compared to CTV. Tonight, for example, /A\ is showing the season premiere of The Vampire Diaries, which is a very popular show. Though in my house, we'll be catching the program on WNLO Buffalo, as it'll be in HD from that station.
ScaryBob 2010-09-09, 03:50 PM Anyone who has a choice will not watch programming on A. The channel here uses secondary feeds for much of its programming. Programs are often riddled with compression artifacts and dropouts. Then there is the big gray /A\ logo they use to cover up the source network logo. I would guess that CTV is putting no money whatsoever into technical upgrades for these stations. Even if they convert the transmitters to ATSC, they will still look like crap.
FunkyTown 2010-09-09, 04:51 PM I wish CTV never bought A. It was so much better before they bought it. We even lost my favorite news channel. I always loved the A-News with Sandra Blakey. Ever since CTV bought that network it's been going downhill.

I think in some circumstances /A\ provides an option for CTV when they want to simsub two shows at the same timeslot.
I remember at one point Lost was airing on /A\, as CTV had chosen to air another show (Dancing perhaps?). Anyway, what that did for CTVgm, was capture simsub revenue for those locations that had an /A\ affiliate. Not everyone watches HD.

Not to mention during the Olympics.

Educated or elitest. Why does some have to not be smarter to watch SD either because it's cheaper or because there's a wealth of more content out there in SD.
I just finished a Barney Miller marathon...sure it would have been nice if the discs were in HD but I'd rather focus on the content than how it's presented.

If the industry pushed for subchannels with simsubs they wouldn't need these secondary nets anymore.

First of all, don't confuse education with intelligence. Someone can be educated and unintelligent and likewise someone can be uneducated and very intelligent.
Secondly, there is a difference between choosing to watch a program in SD because it isn't available (or conveniently available) in HD and not knowing how to watch something in HD when it is available.

Shows like Barney Miller will not benefit from HD anyway. Many were shot in NTSC video. They would benefit from being on an ATSC digital subchannel though. Shows that were shot with film would benefit from being converted to HD.
If the industry pushed for subchannels with simsubs they wouldn't need these secondary nets anymore.
We may see subchannels eventually. Then nets like /A\ would effectively become SD digital subchannels for older 4:3 programming. The CRTC is currently preventing subchannels. I'm guessing the the CRTC probably made this ruling to force networks to convert to HD. That is backfiring since the CRTC also relaxed simsub rules and HD simsubs are taking place where no local HD channels exist. That effectively eliminates the need for digital conversion in many markets. CTV has stated that they will not convert to digital in non-mandatory markets. Almost simultaneously, they have applied for and won simsub rights in markets where no CTV transmitters exist. Does anyone else see a problem with this?

There are some people who don't realize you need a HD STB to get HDTV over cable.

That I'll certainly give you. If ppl are watching their new HDTV's with no stb or a non-HD digital box and thinking it's HD then that would be foolish however all other concerns about my reply seem to be debating semantics.
I've seen HD...and to be honest I'm not that impressed. Even if an HD show is on I'll offten still be watching it on my Magnavox H2160MW9's tuner instead of switching over to the one inside of my TV.
Jase88 2010-09-12, 03:16 PM Technically it's not necessary to use a STB to view HD digital QAM signals. Most TV's with an ATSC tuner also have a QAM tuner. And many cable carriers throughout North America do in fact deliver some HD channels in clear-QAM.
Carriers like Rogers have decided to deliver HD content only via an STB. 'Cause they want you to rent/buy a box for all sets within your home.

They have? That is very surprising. When did that happen? If true, I defiantly have a problem with this!
FunkyTown 2010-09-12, 06:08 PM Why would they buy simsub rights in areas where they don't transmit? The only thing I can think of is they plan to transmit in those areas? Is this strictly OTA or could they have purchased this for Bell Fibe or Bell Satellite?

Yes it is possible but I don't believe any Canadian BDU's offer HD clear QAM. Most don't even offer any real SD channels for video via clear QAM.
Cogeco being on of the rare exceptions with basic and digital basic on clear QAM but SD only - for the rest the most you'll see is a barker channel.
