That local Niagara channel was denied OTA and thus did not get onto basic cable in the area. They were on a digital channel with a high number that no one knew of their existence.Way to support local original stations CRTC.

Agreed; this would absolutely disadvantage CHCH in Hamilton. Although CKVR will not solicit local ADs in the region; national advertisers will more likely go with CKVR over CHCH.

It's also a big slap in the face to people in the Niagara region who have wanted their own TV station for years and have been denied that opportunity in the past.
The link I gave you in post 234 gives you the ability to comment on the proposal. Rather then rant about it on this forum, put your comments on the record at the CRTC.

You're right though, it could amount to nothing. But if you don't try, ....

Agreed though that a Niagara focused station would be better, but I'm always happy to add a new station to the list of ones I receive.

Did you notice in CTV2's application to the CRTC that they attested that their repeater transmitters would not financially impact the other OTA stations including....TFO.

I wonder if they know something we don't about TVO's digital transition?

Probably a typo. Likely meant "TVO".

If they use 42 from Hamilton Omni with 500kw ,there would be no need for the Niagara repeater.

You're thinking like a viewer, and not from a regulatory perspective. ;-)

The purpose of these two transmitters isn't to accommodate OTA viewers. Rather, they simply want to secure simsub rights for these two regions (Niagara & Hamilton).

500KW on 42 would beat the daylights out of WNED on 43 for many viewers.

A new Niagara local station would fight with CHCH for advertising and viewers. CHCH would be weakened and it would be hard to see how a new station would make it at all. In reality, CHCH is the local station for the Niagara Peninsula.

The only reason CHCH is supporting this is the money CTV is paying for rent on the CHCH tower.Okay George move 200kw on 42 to Niagara and no problems for WNED.Poor use of spectrum to have 2 repeaters when 1 will do.Look at Sun same thing .Why not repeater for CFPL ,they are in worse financial shape. How about a CHEX repeater for London since CBC not interested. Also the Niagara repeater on 42 will cause problems for Global reception in Fort Erie area.

According to their application, there is potential interference to 0.1% of the population -- some 7,000 people clustered in a very small area west of Niagara. Does it mean the interference can't be overcome with some effort by those viewers?

It means Global has a good reason to intervene in CTV2s application. Why is not the Hamilton transmitter alone enough to get simsub rights for all of Niagara? The coverage is there on their map.

I plan to intervene in opposition to both transmitters. My rationale is as follows:

- Niagara Region is in need of a locally-based television station. The population is large enough to support it, if it is available at least OTA and on basic cable.
- Barrie/GTA-based news programming is of little to no relevance to Niagara Region.
- If Niagara Region and GTA advertisers want to advertise on the Buffalo stations, there is no reason they should not be able to in a free market. The addition of a Niagara-based television station would also enhance competition with GTA and Buffalo stations for advertising dollars; such a station could even attract advertising from Buffalo/Niagara Falls (NY).

What I would like to see is a Niagara-based television station with a rebroadcast transmitter in Hamilton in order to improve the chances of attracting national advertising dollars. A CTV2 station would be ideal; I just don't think rebroadcasting a Barrie station is the right way to go about this.

I was just watching CTV news and they had a little story about the guys who do the tv towers. Anyways they were showing the Barrie CKVR tower. They commented that they removed the old analogue and put up another to do the old analogue but at reduced power. Also the report mentioned that a new digital antenna would be up by tuesday. If you get a chance, watch the news tonight because they should air it again.

If we're lucky they'll be transmitting in short order since they don't have to shut anything down for this one.

p.s. it was the 6pm edition of cfto news that I was watching.

just my two cents i'm really excited about CTV2 from barrie going to be available in the hamilton area, seeing as i don't really have much of a chance at catching the barrie feed from here in brantford. Anyways i was reading through all the posts and the documents and i didn't see anywhere that it said when this was going to be happening? Is it for Aug31? anyone know?

Saw that article on the guys changing out the analog, for digital antenna heads. I think they mentioned that they had another dozen to do, before the August 31st deadline. Those dudes must make top dollar, to scale those towers.

The 11:30 pm cfto news report did re-air the original report. I hope some members were able to view it. I tried finding it on the ctv news website but was unsuccessful finding a link to that particular report. I will be be monitoring rf channel 10 starting on tuesday in the hope of being the first to report that CKVR has gone digital. My assumption is that everything on the ground has been done already and that they only need to hookup to the new antenna and flip the switch. Who will be the first to report that CKVR has gone digital?

mrpeter105,

Thanks for telling us about the CKVR tower changes.

I'll be watching for your post this week hopefully letting us all know that your TV has caught a sniff of CKVR in digital on rf10.

I've got my new combo 7-69 antenna on the roof ready to get CKVR if I can. Exciting!

Are you saying that they'll be broadcasting on CH-10 digitally on Tuesday?

As you know, news reporters often get the facts wrong when it comes to the digital OTA transition. So take it with a grain of salt, but the reporter on that CFTO news story said that by Tuesday (tomorrow) the digital transmitter will be operational.

Maybe in testing mode, who knows?

Anyway, if CKVR digital comes to life, you'll be hearing about it here. What a nice summer bonus if CKVR goes digital early!

If they start up early i wonder how much problem with analog adjacents will cause us in the GTA.
