Achannel in London is planning the switch on or about September 1st of this year. Unfortunately any HD for the newscasts will not occur for some time.

I actually meant he was telling me about CKCO, as he knows what is going there as well

NOOOOOOOOOO

Not CKCO Sarnia. What else I am gonna compare analog to digital with.

Seriously though, I hope that they go near their assigned MAX. Which would be an ERP of near 810kW.

Then I will not need to worry about getting CKCO from Kitchener site.

In their application it states that the transmitter will be capable of around 30kw but only 8.9kw will be used. Are they expecting to need more power or is it normal to over size the transmitter?

I just read the engineering brief which says the 6 KW transmitter will be operated at 2.5 KW to produce 11 KW ERP in the horizontal plane. Operating the transmitter at full power would produce around 30 KW ERP as you suggest. Selection of a 6 KW transmitter could mean that the transmitter line does not have a closer power transmitter (ie. 3 KW) or the engineers believe that VHF ERPs will be increased overall and more power will be required in the future. If all VHF stations increased power by 3 dB, the interference ratios would remain as they are now but signal strength would double improving reception for difficult urban areas.

GeorgeMx, I haven't read the engineering brief, but if I understand what you are saying, that is very encouraging. It sounds like they are anticipating the same problems they had in the US with DTV on VHF and expect that they will need to apply for an emergency increase in power (like they did in the US).

To bad they can't do this up front, but I guess IC has their heads buried in the sand and have not bothered looking at the US results and learn lessons from them, but instead want to check if physics in Canada is different than it is in the US. ;)

I've updated this thread's title as per the info in the following thread discussion: Bell Media’s /A\ Network to Become "CTV Two" This Fall (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=141102)

As before, please keep this present thread focused only on the OTA DTV transition status and issues regarding the CTV and CTV Two stations. Discuss any and all other aspects of the /A\ Channel -> CTV Two change in that other thread.

CKY Manitoba has their new antenna installed and looks like more work to do on the tower, jin pole still attached at top. Getting ready for the transition I expect. Nice to see progress!
Will post pictures in the appropriate section..

man I can't wait. Between CTV and Global that's 95% of what I bother to watch.

I wonder if CTV plans to introduce CTV 2 as a sub-channel in certain markets that don't have A channel.

Wont happen, against CRTC rules for sub-channels... i won't elaborate as it's a discussion for a different thread, as this is the transition thread...

Well if thats the CRTC's stand then the CRTC is an ASS, digital TV this should be considered an opportunity for broadcasters both in providing more variety while sharing an reducing costs, Of course the government can't collect HST/GST on my OTA viewing.

That's not exactly the CRTC's stand. The CRTC has said it is open to broadcasters multiplexing on a single transmitter licensed OTA stations in small markets.

This would apply, let's say, should CTV wish to convert CHRO (analog channel 5) and CJOH-TV-47 (analog channel 47) Pembroke to digital using a single transmitter in Pembroke.

That's not the same case as introducing CTV2 in markets in which is was not previously available OTA.

If this gets approved, it will be great for Toronto OTA users because people won't be forced to buy a separate VHF antenna pointed at Barrie in hopes of getting CTV2. Looks like people in Toronto would have a strong possibility of getting CTV2 CKVR Barrie with their single 4221hd antenna. If they get CHCH they'd probably get CTV2.

I really hope the CRTC denies this request but I'm assuming they will rubber stamp this application.

CTV/Bell only reasoning is for simsub rights for US programs in the Hamilton,Niagara area. They claim approval of this will not impact at ad revenue from CHCH or any other Toronto OTA station is absolute bull.If ratings go up because of simsubs then an advertiser will lilely choose CTV2 CKVR rather than CHCH.CKVR is not licensed to serve GTA,Ham,Niagara areas. That said the CRTC will rubber stamp this.It will be easier for OTA users to get CTV2 in the GTA.

Agreed, even as an OTA supporter (and someone who wants UHF only) if they were looking to launch a new Niagara based station station instead of looking to rebroadcast CKVR in the LOS to Buffalo then I am all for it, but not this...

Agreed; this would absolutely disadvantage CHCH in Hamilton. Although CKVR will not solicit local ADs in the region; national advertisers will more likely go with CKVR over CHCH.

It's also a big slap in the face to people in the Niagara region who have wanted their own TV station for years and have been denied that opportunity in the past.

As far as OTA audience is concerned, this will be good for CHCH. Right now, probably a lot of people in the eastern GTA are willing to sacrifice CHCH for good Buffalo reception. Now there will be two interesting channels coming from Hamilton to make it worth people's while to perhaps make their single 4221hd setup into a two-4221hd setup. CHCH will be the beneficiary of that - which is good because I really enjoy CHCH.

I have a fuzzy recollection of a Niagara based local station throwing in the towel after only a few months. Didn't someone have a thread about that here on Digital Home? The extra local channel came-and-went without getting any traction. This was recently.

We're all lucky to be getting CTV2 on UHF in the GTA, I think.
