: QC - West Island, Southwest QC, Cornwall and Eastern ON - OTA
Steve_M 2011-11-16, 08:56 PM OK, I tried the indoor loop up at approx. 30ft up the tower and I get;
2.1 SRC
3.1/.2 WCAX (CBS)
5.1/.2 WPTZ (NBC)
6.1 CBC
10.1 CFTM
12.1 CTV
15.1/.2 Global
17.1 TVQ
33.1/.2/.3/.4 VPT (PBS)
57.1/.2/.3 WCFE (PBS)
62.1 Metro
the 2 PBS were the weakest, but all were watchable.
Next I McGyvered a basic GH with an old broom handle and 12ga. electrical wire, stuck on the tower outside the 2nd floor bedroom about 20ft. up;
I get all of the above but NBC & Metro are tropo dependant.
Videotron Illico cancelled this morning (was going to cancel my trio, but got a decent discount to keep internet & telephone). Being old-school, I was always against paying for TV. Thanks everyone!
Todo list;
strengthen the GH, put it up at the top of the tower.
Steve,
youre getting there now
all thats missing FOX, and ABC
A moded bow-tie antenna will nail those 2 down
or if you insist on your GH, an added yagi will get you ABC anyway ;)
northbear 2011-12-06, 11:12 AM CKMI improved,I can pick up stable signal:71%.
northbear 2011-12-06, 10:39 PM CKMI gone again.
StephenF 2011-12-19, 12:39 AM Live on the second floor of an apartment in Dorval.
My first attempt at a SBGH yielded about 19 channels (if you include all the sub channels like 15-1, 15-2 ...) which come in quite clear.
It is sitting on a channel pointed N/S right now until I find a spot on the wall to mount it.
FrankTurbo 2011-12-27, 08:21 PM I need to get station that are 114miles to 129miles from me but they are putting out over 650k watts of power so should no be a problem.
WNNY-WVNY-WPTZ-plattsburg-Burlington just to name a few.
The rest are under 100miles. most are 40 to 60 miles.
so I should be fine with CM7777 and my DB8 at 70' in the tower with a rotor.
I do live in Hawkesbury but we have local tv station here TFO and TVO
but they are weak like under 40k watts maybe even 8k watts.
rabbit73 2011-12-27, 09:28 PM FrankTurbo:
It's not the transmitter power but the signal strength at your location that is important with OTA.
WVNY is not going to be easy:
http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3d4033cf89344918
If you enter your exact address at tvfool and your antenna height, it will give a more accurate report.
Using the interactive map feature of tvfool with the antenna at 70 ft does help:

FrankTurbo 2011-12-27, 09:41 PM Yes I know it's like 120miles from me.
SET up- DB8 70 feet up the tower with rotor and a CM7777 preamp with a VHF on top
hope it's enuff Was getting 21 channels with old antenna and a cheap ebay pre amp.
ota_canuck 2011-12-28, 01:26 AM FrankTurbo,
120 miles away?
Here's a line of sight calculator tool for LOS reference: http://www.naval.com/sight/index.htm
Given your 70ft TV antenna height over the curvature of the earth, the broadcaster's antenna would have to be at about 6000ft.
Note that the calculated result is based on a perfect terrain such as the unobstruced surface of the sea. So, you'd have to determine your antenna's height above sea level and the broadcaster's antenna above sea level.
Maybe 60 miles+ is do-able on good skip/tropo days, but not for a reliable 24/7 signal.
A preamp won't increase the distance of your antenna's reception capability and/or correct the curvature of the earth's surface. The preamp can only amplify whatever signal your antenna receives and ensures that the signal gets a boost throughout your cabling lengths to your TV.
FrankTurbo 2011-12-28, 02:04 AM Well I was getting the station that are 114miles from me with a old 98 ice storm beat up antenna so I was sure I could get the channel that is a few miles away but like you tell me won't be posible.
But trust me I will try I a old CB'er DXer so try I will but maybe that station is too weak
for my goal.
I just did a google earth mesurment and WPTZ is 112miles from my house and the WNNY and WVNY is almost at the same distance
but WPTZ come in fine at my house. but not WNNY and WVNY they are low power station.
northbear 2012-01-05, 08:27 AM since the holiday season, WVNY(22.1) is quite stable. I can pickup it most of time in everyday. 71% strength.

northbear 2012-01-09, 01:57 PM Yesterday, I rise my 8bay antenna, I got WVNY signal quite stable. The signal's strength gets 72-76%, before it 70-71% and depended on weather.
I still not get 15.2 CKMI. Maybe someone tell me why.
FrankTurbo 2012-01-09, 01:59 PM Thats global very good station.
re do a full scan from scrach I did last night and got 3 new channels
I'm over 40 channels now.
FrankTurbo 2012-01-14, 11:08 PM I get CBMT CBC on 6.1 Montreal and I get ckmi global on 15.1 maybe why I don't get many channels from Ottawa the Montreal channels are going over them?
I'M 1/2 from Montreal and Ottawa
tvlurker 2012-01-15, 12:14 AM FrankTurbo, Global Ottawa has a very deep null towards the east, so it is very unlikely you would get it in Hawkesbury. If it was just a question of multiple 6-1 virtual channels, most tuners let you select multiple channels with the same virtual number by using the "up" or "down" key.
AETGSA 2012-01-16, 02:39 PM Does anyone have any trouble receiving WCFE (57-X) or other U.S. channels in the West-island ?
It seem ever since the extreme cold started lately, U.S. channels seem harder to get.
Blackburst 2012-01-16, 05:33 PM Not in the west island, but I can confirm that I had problems with some of the border stations this morning.
Lost : WFFF
Pixel Break up : WPTZ
Overall low signal strength by 25% on WETK, WCAX
WCFE was normal.
But, WNPI was coming in very strong. Also WNYF was coming in as well. So that would indicate signals coming in from the west.
Also noticed that TFO (Channel 39) and TVO (channel 48) stations in Hawksburry where coming in as well.
I'm sure this is all temperary. Things will straighten out with the change of the weather patterns.
FrankTurbo 2012-01-16, 07:18 PM The Hawkesbury station are like 8miles from me, but only run in analog.
unless they change to digital?
I get 65.1 perfect now.
still no 22.1 and 22.2 but like I was told it will take some work to get them in.
northbear 2012-01-17, 01:02 PM FrankTurbo:
If you want to get WVNY 22.1, my suggestion is that rise up your antenna as high as possible.
I live in pincourt, I use 8bay UHF and cm7777. After I rise my antenna, I can get it stable.
