Just wanted to let the world know that I've got WFFF!

I've applied the 4228HD hack (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=111383). I made 2 baluns optimized for real channel 43 (19.2 cm) and combined them using a normal cable splitter. The reception is much improved. Most of my channels are now close or above 90% strength... it's almost too good to be true! On top of that, I now have WFFF, at 50% during the day, which makes it very watchable at night. I recommend everyone with a 4228HD to make this hack (using home-made baluns), it's well worth the effort.

thanks for replying.
Can i get those channels with a home made coat hanger antenna?
if not, what would be the cost of all this stuff?
thank you :)

mehdijabrane, this thread will give you a good idea of how much our members usually spent on OTA gear:

How much would/did you pay for OTA? (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=32189)

If you want specific price information you can only use this thread for Quebec:

Hi,
I just bought an HD TV. A friend of mine lend me its TERK HDTVa to try but I did not obtain good results. I was only able to get 1 HD channel (besides all regular local analogic channels in my area). I think it is because there is a big hill (Mont Royal) between my appartment and most local HD transmitters.
So I think I'd better use an outdoor antenna on my roof. After reading reviews and the decision chart in this forum, I've chosen the CM4220 or CM4221. These antenna are UHF antenna.
My question is:
Does it mean that I won't receive any of the channels (HD or analogic) lower than 14 with these antennas?

Thanks for your help,

Vincent

Don't waste money on a 2bay 4220 unless you live within 20 miles of the stations that you expect to get. A 4bay 4221HD is designed for UHF 14-69, however it may still bring in your local and some of the higher powered VHF-Hi 7-13 stations.

For Rural/Fringe areas [+40miles from the broadcast towers] distant or weaker VHF signals may not be obtainable with any reliability with any of the UHF antennas.

With my Monoprice antenna i get:

3.1 WCAX-DT
3.2 WCAX-DT
5.1 WPTZ-DT
5.2 WPTZ-DT
17.1 CIVM-DT
33.1 WETK-DT
33.2 WETK-DT
33.3 WETK-DT
33.4 WETK-DT
57.1 WCFE-DT
57.2 WCFE-DT
57.3 WCFE-DT

It's outside on my wall at about 15' high.

Hi everyone. I must say, this forum as been very helpful to me. I just installed my CM 4228HD on my roof (approx: Corner Sherbrooke and Baldwin) and those are the channels I got;

WPTZ-DT
CBFT-DT
CBMT-DT
WCAX-DT
WCAXtra
CIVM-DT
CFJP-DT

I'm using a normal uhf/vhf 10 db amplifier with around 50 ft of RG6. I would like to know if investing in a pre-amplifier (CM-7777 perhaps) would improve my signal reception and or allow me to have a lock on WFFF-DT/WVNY-DY.

My tvfool report says that I should be able to pick up those two stations with an attic mounted antenna.

Thanks a lot !

Hello OTA Members

I wonder if someone could help me lock on to channels 43-1-2 wfff and 18-1-2-3 pbs.I get wfff 50% of the time and pbs 10% of the time.
My equiptment consists of a 40 ft tower,a uhf vhf fm deep fringe ant and on top an 8 bay UHF with a pre-amp UNDER the deep fringe and an amp inside the house. Also 45 ft of rg6.

ALL equiptment is app 15 yrs old and was installed on a new tower last year.Everything is made by cnannel master.

( Ideas I have) Separate pre-amps,GO higher,BUILD THE DBGHG HELP!!!!!

Hi Keychaine

Wow, that is darn far to be even catching Fox 44-1 :) I'm surprised you can even do that.

Are you combining both VHF and UHF signals from two different antenneas? If so, try just UHF antenna into the 45 ft of rg6 (you'll lose ABC if you even had it since that is VHF) and see if the Fox signal increases.

But you are so far...might have to resort to combining two channel master 8 bay antennas :)

Hi keychaine

did you tried to turn around your antenna and watch the signal strenght ?
I have a VHF-UHF-FM combo antenna at the cottage at Ste-Marguerite-du-Lac -masson, and i discovered 3 years ago that aiming the antenna ( for me ) to the north, instead of the south, i was able to catch WCAX 55%, WPTZ 40%, WCFE 45% and WETK 40% most of the time, FOX still too weak ( 15%)
The idea is that the american signal are bouncing in the top of a mountain higher than my location...

good luck:)

Hi Yuprules,
THANK YOU for your imput.Yes both combine at pre-amp.( old 300 ohm imput cm with 75 ohm out.). FAQ site says older equip. is better. My new tower helps. I,ve designed a new instalation consisting of rotor app. 8 feet of the ground with adj height and adj tilt.New rotor freezes. I,ts cold up there.I,ve though of putting a new pre-amp (Research coms) and running a new rg6 with an a-b switch in the house?

Also my pre-amp now is under my combo ant.Woulden,t it be better to put the new uhf pre-amp just under the uhf ant? I was told i could gain 3 db.

Hi Mille,

Thanks for joining in.Tried that-no bannas.BUT WCAX does just that. Thank you for your input. Check out my other post.

Before you buy new equipment try just one UHF signal in (no vhf) if possible on your antenna. You seem to have two cables coming out of your antenna, uhf and vhf....so try just UHF alone without any input from the VHF to see if that helps.

Hi YUPRULES

IN a week or two I will do as you suggested .ALSO Ifeel like slowely adding while testing 6 feet to the height of my uhf antenna and removeing my combo.( which was under the uhf ) ,completely off. Now I can put my pre-amp closer to my uhf ant. What do you think?

Not a bad idea to get rid of the combo during your testing. Also if the combo is too close to your UHF, it might interfere.

Removed vhf connections on pre-amp.Lost channel 13 and had no gain on uhf.Too much wind to remove combo. So....I gave it a look and said " I"LL BE BACK" Not knowing future of channel 13 I may or may not have to buy a 10y13s once I remove the combo. In the meantime I"m looking to put an extension, lifting my antennas higher.

Have you tried a better branded amp one such as channelmaster or PCT (they have outdoor ones)?

Although an "expensive" risk for testing purposes.
