: News channel ratings in Canada
travisc 2010-06-25, 11:23 AM I thought I'd start a new thread to avoid taking the Quebecor news channel thread farther off topic again. With data taken from Cartt.ca, who got the data from BBM ratings from August 31, 2009 to June 6, 2010, here's what the ratings actually are:
- CNN & CNN Headline News reach 3.1 million Canadians (18+) per week with an average minute audience of 22,000.
- CBC News and CTV News Net reach 3.3 million Canadians (18+) per week with an average minute audience of 21,000.
- CP24 reaches 3.5 million Canadians (18+) per week with an average minute audience of 22,000.
- FOX News reaches 100,000 Canadians (18+) per week with an average minute audience of 2,000.
Flame on! ;)
Fox is even lower than I would have imagined... Personally I can't see Fox News North being succesful here unless they tone it down quite a bit (compared to Fox South that is). There is a small conservative base in Canada but I think (and hope) that they are much more moderate than their American counterparts.
james039 2010-06-25, 01:13 PM Well, obviously fox news has fewer viewers when it's only available on a higher digital tier that you have to ask for. I suspect it's numbers would be the same as the others if it were on basic cable.
what gauls me is the amount of subscriber revenues goes to CBC and CTV and yet only a small percentage of Canadians watch them.
CP24 which you have to subscribe for with most vendors (and is in less households) has better numbers!
These channels should NOT be in basic packages where consumers are forced to pay for them.

Agreed... and neither should Fox News North be near any kind of basic package.
kirjtc2 2010-06-25, 01:50 PM I'd like to see how MSNBC's numbers (or even BBC World's) compare to FNC's. They're hampered by the same restrictions.

I agree, I'd also like to see the individual numbers for CBC NN, CTV, CNN and HLN, rather than have CBC NN/CTV and CNN/HLN grouped together.
Also, it'd be interesting to see the numbers for the others not mentioned, like RT and AJE.
MCIBUS 2010-06-25, 02:50 PM I wonder what CP24 sub base would be if BTV didn't carry it. After all more or less its geared towards Toronto?
As for Fox News(South) if they want to yap about right wing things and slam Socialists ideas, preach conservatism they should be allowed to do so.
Just like a news net work should be allowed to preach socilism and yap about Captalist lap dogs mobo jumbo, they should be llowed to do so..
Bottom line don't like it don't sub & watch either way..

+1 We need less stuff people are forced to buy on basic - not more.
However, if Fox News North get approved, then expect Torstar to start drooling over all the carriage fees and for them to apply for a left leaning news net to get in on the game as well.
What's good for the goose...

Smaller base but they shout much more and they control CTVgm, Canwest Global and now the CBC unlike America where they just have Fox.
Plus, unlike America, the left and centre (NDP, Lib, Green) seem happy to attack each other instead of working together therfore I could see Quebecor being just as right wing as the Fox service if they do end up on the tiers since they won't need to attract a wide viewership base to be certain of a revenue stream.

You've seen Ezri Levant on TV right? Plus right wing TV pundit Charles McVety has been said to have had personal meetings with Harper so I'd tend to suspect they're just as right wing or perhaps even more so.
travisc 2010-06-25, 10:14 PM I tend to think the more narrow availability of FOX News is just an excuse... After all, right-wingers tend to be pretty hardcore about this channel so I would think if there is that big an audience in Canada, they would go out of their way to ensure they got that channel.

Would be nice to have a thread without politics.

I believe you'll find plenty of those in threads which are not about news channels who exist to a large degree to cover politics and who often have an idelogical bias of their own.
kingcyrus 2011-04-20, 11:07 PM where can i find the ratings for sun news this week?

You are absolutely correct. In most cable systems in Canada you need to rent-buy a digital box in order to get Fox News. Newsworld and Newsnet are in the must carry basic tier.

I couldn't agree with you more and that also goes for Sun which I support.
Emerald_Boar 2011-04-21, 07:23 PM No one watches RT or Al Jezeera? Both are quite good.
Even though Press TV is not on any cable/Sat services. I find it interesting to watch as well <:

Boca Junior 2011-04-22, 11:25 PM Well for what it's worth, I believe that "news" channels (define amongst yourselves) should ALL be on the basic tier (assuming one subscribes to satellite or cable) no matter what their political leaning. That way everyone has the ability to making their own decisions, without paying extra for one or the other. Everything else can be optional.

Huh??? These are pay channels. Putting them all on basic will boost cable/satellite bills even more.

Howsabout the being able to make the decision not to subscribe and pay to ANY of them?
