so on a wonderfull saturday night i decided to test my CM 4228 for the 1st time. Brought it out and tested it at 8 feet off the ground pointing south. received the same channel line up as my bowtie home made antenna except for 1 new, some kind of test channel that was looping a short video of the town of Aylmer Channel 46.1 with a streaming text at the bottom :this is a test channel for crc.gc.ca: I found that really interresting.
anyways here is the lineup that i got:
4
4.1
6
9
9.1
11
13
14
17.1
20.1
24
30
32
34
40
43
46.1
60
65
66.1

Global and CJOH were clear as if i was watching them on cable and same for TVO, i was really impressed with the quality upgrade on all channels. Next step is to bring it up on the roof and see if i can get PBS.

Let us know if you pick up American stations. I'm in Aylmer with my CM4228 in my attic. I'm not getting any US station. 66.1 barely comes in.

Funky,

Do you get the 46.1 test channel in your attic ?

Is it still on the air? I find a lot of those channels come and go. So I deleted them from my available channels.

Reception Report: Danford Lake Kazabazua Quebec

Channel Master 4228hd (not hacked)
Channel Master 7777 pre-amp mast-mounted
Split to two TVs
Grounded
Mounted on peak of metal roof at cottage on a seven-foot fence post.
Cottage is on a hill so the antenna is really only about five-to-ten feet above ground level at the road.
Antenna is pointed upward toward the tops of the trees.

Analogue:
4 CBC CBOT watchable
8 CTV CJOH watchable (from Cornwall)
9 Radio-Canada CBOFT clear
11 CHCH watchable
13 CTV CJOH clear
24 TVOntario CICA watchable
30 CIVO clear
34 CFGS watchable
40 CHOT clear

Digital:
CBOT 25 (Virtual 4.1)
CBOFT 22 (Virtual 9.1)
Solid, reliable signal - though they only show as 40 percent solid.

Didn't get:

SunTV CKXT 20.1 -- TV Fool shows it as my strongest digital channel, but I noticed it has a weak ERP?

Global TV CIII 6 -- Not much of a surprise since this is low VHF and I'm using a UHF antenna. Worth noting is that I get CBC Channel 4 analogue using this antenna - but not as strongly as I should. C'mon Global move to a new channel!!!

CHRO "A" Channel 5 analogue -- I'm not getting a rotor for the cottage. Low VHF.

Other Channels on TV Fool show as being -30NM(db) -- I'm guessing they are not worth the effort from my location.

As it is a cottage, a couple of channels are fine. I wouldn't put in a tower. Maybe a rotor someday. I'll wait and see what happens with the Low VHF channels and their locations before making any new efforts to get them.

Reception was fantastic late this evening.
From 1130pm to 0130am, 3 distant american DTV signalswere very strong;
ch 23 with 18.1 PBS sd, 18.2 PBS sd and 18.3 PBS HD,
ch18 with 28.1 Fox and 28.2 WWNY
ch 38 with 57.1 ARTS
Suspect that a Weather front helped the signals , before wiping out all signals just after 0130am sunday

Oh, I'm in Gatineau (Aylmer sector) and cannot pick up any of these channels. How are you doing it?

I am in Champlain Park with a 45 ft radio tower, for my amateur radio. I have a M4 antenna, 9.0 x 8.75 ins, no reflector & CM 7777 low noise amp mounted at the top of the tower. My signals are split inside the house to feed 2 HD tvs and one old large crt type tv.
All local DTV signals, with the leaves down, come in at 97% scale, with only 66.1 reading 80 to90 %

Saturday night the signals could have been aided by a tropo duct, but I believe a large wet weather front coming from the northwest provided the extra signal reflection. As soon as the rain storm covered the Cornwall Ont area , all signals disappeared.

Sunday nothing was to be seen of the US signals.
I use Ch8 CJOH Cornwall and Ch36 CKWS Smith Falls, both very weak analog signals, as a guide.

Interesting setup you've got there. 45 feet is quite the height. Plus is Champlain Park on a hill? I've heard of the Champlain Bridge but never the park.

Between Vanier and Allen, north of McConnell if I am not mistaken. I was recently at the North end of Wilfred-Lavigne and that location has a nice view to the south too.

I'm down closer to the river so my elevation would likely never permit me the US stations.

Me too, I live near the arenas in Aylmer, have Terk amplified silver sensor clone, get City, Sun, CBC English and French, Omni 1 and on rare occasions Omni 2. I have to turn the antenna back and forth between Mt Cascades and Herberts corners to accomplish this. All the signals become weak when the weather gets bad. I am waiting for the digital switch over to decide if I should invest in an good outdoor antenna. We cut off cable a while back and don't really miss it. Just bought a 1080P TV and can watch some HD shows for free!

I don't know if it's the weather or what it is, but the only channel from Hebert Corners I'm picking up tonight is CHCH. Usually that channel is the worst even on a fine day.

Are others having any luck picking it up? CityTV, A, and CFMT are off air for me.

Yes, us too, last night nothing from the south had to watch Cornation Street; started to get into it!

Everything is back working today. They must have been performing some maintenance.

HI,

I was wondering what the best OTA antenna to use without going DIY. I've done a lot of googling and reading all sorts of stuff. Here is my TVFOOL report for my location:

http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3dda320fd3b33171

I have a few questions:

1. Would an OMNI antenna be OK for where I am ?
2. If I put it in the attic, will there be signal loss ?
3. What are the best antennas for my situation if I cant use an OMNI
(without going DIY) ?
3.1 Do I need two antennas, one pointing to Manotick and the other to Camp Fortune ?
4. Do I need a pre-amp ?
5. Do I need a amplified splitter if I want to send it to 3 tvs in my house ?
6. Anyone in Aylmer getting good OTA experience ? Especially with HDTV ? What are you using ?

HI,

I was wondering what the best OTA antenna to use without going DIY. I've done a lot of googling and reading all sorts of stuff. Here is my TVFOOL report for my location:

I have a few questions:

1. Would an OMNI antenna be OK for where I am ?

Might be
OK, but you won't get PBS.

2. If I put it in the attic, will there be signal loss ?

Yes, somewhere between 10 and 20 dB, depending on the attic construction.

3. What are the best antennas for my situation if I cant use an OMNI
(without going DIY) ?

I'll let others answer that. It depends on what stations you want to get.

3.1 Do I need two antennas, one pointing to Manotick and the other to Camp Fortune ?

Your Camp Fortune stations will come in no matter what, and with digital, the multipath will most likely be taken care of.
I would point one antenna at Herberts Corners/South Colton, and you should be able to get everything (all locals, plus PBS and probably CBS/Fox)

4. Do I need a pre-amp ?

You're quite close to Fortune, so I would try without one. If you do find you need one to get more reliable reception of the American stations, be sure to turn on the FM and or VHF traps to avoid being overloaded by all the FM stations at Fortune.

5. Do I need a amplified splitter if I want to send it to 3 tvs in my house ?

Not for the local stations, but perhaps for the american ones.

Can some give me the coordiate for the Manotic OTA station. I was able, using google earth to get the Camp Fortune ( 45°30'7.98"N 75°51'1.03"W), but not sure about Manotic or other ones in Ottawa.

I am installing my antenna this weekend and want to use my GPS for more accurate pointing.

Thanks
