Wing, a couple of weird requests. 1) Could you post a picture of your antenna as it is on your roof and 2) what balun are you using with the 302.

My exploits have been futile as far as Global goes. I tried moving the rabbit ears, adding my CM 7777 - nothing works yet I receive Global without an antenna (I had previously removed the FM filter) with just coax on my computer. I guess I'll have to go the dedicated folded dipole route for Global, but I'll wait until CJOH does the flip.

My notes may be well off, but, a total length for 82 MHz is 69" or there abouts using 12 AWG??? I can't remember how to use the online calculators.

Maybe it's time for another build party?

Balun, I don't know which one I have Jeff at OTA gave me one for the 302 when I bought it.

I'm heading back to the roof I'll take some pictures. I called global, the tech actually called me back. He said they are having big issues in Ottawa and said it was because the CRTC gave them the mandate for the strengths and they will be doing something in the next couple of days. But they are trying, it is frustrating for them because they know the numbers CRTC gave them, won't give them the coverage they want.

Photos (disregard the mess of wires, I taped them up cleanly afterwards):

EDIT:

And the best I could get global.

OH OH OH!!!! I am able to get garbled audio and video on MythTV!! Progress!!!

I get nothing on my Samsung, but I get a lock and garbly goop on my MYTH! Any way to boost that more?

Hey there...

Wondering if it is possible to pick up any US channels living in the College Square area? Here's my TVfool:

http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3d9e74e83a7de9ec

Right now I just use a Philips rabbit-ears + UHF loop setup on the second floor, aimed out a window at HC, and I get all the Ottawa digital channels clearly except OMNI2, and I'm hoping that will be resolved once they move to channel 20. 11 and 13 also come in crystal clear, 43 comes in with snow, but I'm assuming I'll get the digital version of these no problem come September.

Do I even have a hope of sniffing a US channel if I put a channel master & preamp on the roof? Or should I just stick with the current setup?

wing: out of curiosity, what did you use for a mast (the black tube plugged into your j-mount)? Does it just slide into the j-mount? Looks nice.

Paul, 1 1/2" fence post :). Home depot, $11 slides into j-mount, drilled hole through it and lock it in with a bolt, nice and solid.

Good stuff, thanks!

I'd like to get more height out of my j-mount, to clear some trees.

wing, is that big tree in the way of your CF Line Of Sight ? I am wondering (out loud) what is the effect of trees against VHF Lo.

jfgroves, you're looking at probably WNPI (PBS) most if not all the time, and maybe WCFE (PBS) most of the time but worse than WNPI. Forget about picking other US channels reliably all year long. As a guide, look at the channels at -10db NM or above, forget the others. You'd need a rotator to go back and forth between these 2 channels if you wanted to get them both.

VHF-LO and FM Radio signals are seldom affected by trees. VHF-HI signals are almost as good through trees. DIstant UHF signals are terribly attenuated by big, thick trees like spruces or cedars, especially during/after rain or snow. In the summer the big broadleaf trees like maples, beech, oak, etc. etc. also drain UHF signals.

According to my compass the tree is dead on line of sight, but I get a much stronger signal pointed between it and another tree. So much so I do not think it is the tree attenuating the signal, because it is from 0 - 17 db difference.

There is a house behind the tree, could be that as well.

I. Going to call CRTC today, global tech told me they are the ones that need to change so they can improve the signal.

Wing:The setup looks good. I only thing I could suggest is the VHF antenna should be higher off the roof, but then it may become too close to the UHF. I would still move it up a foot.

Do you get channel 5 analog from Pembroke? Since it seems you do get all VHF analog stations well, I am still leaning towards a tuner/PSIP issue. Global is doing strange things to people. Hope you have lots of hair.

Global is indeed having a PSIP issue presently, the channel won't scan in wmc/7mc and some tuners. They did change the mismatched tsid I reported but with the wrong one, but the good news is they are listening and taking action on that front.

backpackster, oddly enough it works better lower.

I took the UHF antenna off the roof. Put the VHF antenna up by itself and tried way at the top of the pole and middle and bottom. Bottom was the best signal.

I do not get channel 5, never tried aiming there though. Oddly my Samsung TV doesn't get 6 at all, it will lock and display a black screen. My 2 Hauppauge 950q's get it but it is receiving too many uncorrectable errors.

Shingles are grippy beneath the feet. I just climbed up and stood on the roof. But my roof is pretty easy to get onto and around on.

The coming down is the scary part. :o

Please keep in mind that this thread is for reporting your local reception results from this area and discussing ways to improve them. Here in the OTA Forum there are many, many specific threads covering a variety of topics and issues that are not covered in local reception threads like this one. The OTA FAQ lists many such threads.

I've moved several recent posts into threads that cover their topics better. If you lose track of where your post has gone, simply go to the DHC Quick Links menu and pull down to "My Posts". Another method is to go to one of your previous posts anywhere on the DHC site and click on your own user name to the left to get to the "Find More Posts By..." menu item.

Your post made me smile, I did the same thing.
Although I did reduce the length of the additional pole.

Apologies stampeder, I will post my latest EyeTV scan and a screen shot of GlobalHD.

Now getting 13-1 (CTV) at 82% (similar to CBOT) and Omni2 (14-1) at 62% (strongest of my HC signals, when I didn't get it at all when it was on 66).

Still not getting CITS (42-1), CHCH (22-1) or CTV2 (43-1). I think I need to raise my antenna some more.

Paul you just answered my question. I was wondering what had become of chch.

I'll have to do some tweaking or finally invest in a new 4228.

I'm curious what jrmclean is picking up now as he is in my immediate area. Wish I could get my antenna on the roof!

BTW, I am getting 42-1 and 43-1 with decent signal. But I'd trade those two channels for 22-1.
