I live in Bank St and Heron Rd area of Ottawa. I have a brand new Samsung TV.
I use a set of 1990's rabbit ears with the UHF circle antenna attached. This is what I can pick up for English TV stations
4-1 A+
6-1 A+
13-1 A+
24-1 A+
43-1 B+....was getting it up to about a week ago..now can't.
60-1 B+...was never able to get it...but presto picked it up a few days ago.

Wish I could get 65-1 for that late Sunday football game.

That's pretty good for a set of rabbit ears. (We're in the same neighbourhood, btw.)

I have been getting errors on the signal quality screen of a 26 Sony Bravia.
signal stength is good at 75 with SNR at 20 or 21 but the errors keep incrementing and it screws up the reception.
other channels are fine with those values.
All other local channels are fine including 6.1, 11.1, 14.1, 65.1 etc
does anyone know the cause and the solution.

Is it possible that intereference from a wireless router could be hampering my reception of Global??

Doubtful about a Wifi router (either 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz) would cause interference.

Global is just a painfully weak station which transmits from too low to the ground.

It could be the processor in the router causing interference in the 86 MHz range, not just the actua RF output in the ISM band. Also, what IF do these devices use?

OttawaGuy999, the easiest thing you can do is turn off what you think is an offending device, and check your reception of Global with a signal level meter on your TV or tuner before and after your device is turned off, or even disconnected from the wall outlet if you like. Repeat with the next device.

OttawaGuy999, you should also make sure you have the right antenna for channel 6. If you have just a 4220hd in an apartment, this won't do it. You would need to add rabbit ears with a HLSJ or UVSJ to your setup, and locate the rabbit ears very close to a window because VHF is attenuated quite a bit by walls.

Another tip I mentioned at the Kanata meeting was to turn off all breakers in the house except for the circuit your TV is on (and pre-amp if you have one and it is on a separate circuit) and check your reception. This will tell of you if it is something in your house that is causing problems. If you can receive it, gradually start turning on circuits until your reception goes away. There could be more than one thing causing problems so turning things off one at a time may not work.

Thanks for the tip. In my case, I have located 1 offender which is part of my TV breaker, but I think i will be trying this anyways to rule out others, since i am quite sure that with the array of gizmos I have, there could/will be other offenders. The big old fridge is close by, i am not sure if it is part of the same breaker, but I wanted an easy way to turn it off without moving it to rule it out. This will do it...

According to the Electrical code, the only thing allowed on the same circuit as a refrigerator is a clock (historical from before battery operated clocks were common and people would often have a wall clock in the kitchen), so it "should" be on a different circuit.

Excellent ! Thanks again, now i'm getting excited to turn off the fridge.

Roger, I suspect the "fridge" flavoie is talking about is a spare fridge in the basement. While of course the issues would be the same as a fridge in the kitchen, does the the electrical code rule apply to refrigerators that are not located in a kitchen?

It is indeed my main fridge in the kitchen i was talking about. My main HT room is my living room, right next to the kitchen where the fridge is located. A wall is shared between the 2 rooms, thus my assumption that it was possible that some of the circuits were shared.

That would definitely be against the Ontario code.

Although in my original post I did put the word "should" in quotes since not all houses meet code. ;)

flavoie: When I turn the router off, the break ups and pixelation improve. In terms of an antenna, I use a simple wire dipole antenna that I picked up at The Source for about $10. I get Global about 80% of the time which, considering the antenna, really isn't all that bad I guess.
