Thanks for the info. I will check them out.

Right now, I only have a very old RG59 that's about 100 feet from the basement to the top of antenna, would changing it to a RG6 help a bit? I'm still getting CTV at 100%?

Thanks again.

Yes, changing from RG59 to RG6 will help you with UHF. The losses will not be as great at VHF channel 13 for CTV/CJOH. Also, for 100 feet, you may need a preamp to help more with UHF, particularly the PBSes.

What kind of antenna are you using? Do you get all the UHF channels from CF (4.1 24.1 30.1 34 40.1)?

I get all those UHF channels but 34 has allot of snow. What I find weird is when doing a scan on my Samsung, every time it hits channel 17 and 20, it pauses and continues without detecting any channels on 17 and 20. I guess it because it's on herberts corner tower.

I'm almost tempted to climb my tower and move the tower to point towards HC since all the ones on camp fortune comes in clear. Would I loose all the ones on CF?

Thanks,

34 appears to have lowered its power significantly a month or so ago, so it being snowy is to be expected.

Whether you lose CF channels or not really depends on what kind of antenna you have. If you post a link to your TVfool results it will give us a better idea. Use the online maps feature, specify the height of your antenna above ground, place the antenna location precisely in satellite view. Also, click on "view lines to transmitters" to see if the path to herberts corners is obscured by trees or other building. Then click on "make radar plot", and share the resulting link.

mbourd25, between a preamp and coax change, I would spend my money on a preamp first. Even though the loss is higher on RG59, the preamp will more than make up these losses and at that point you may only care about making sure the connections on your coax get redone if they don't look secure. At that point, I think the main reason you'd want to change the coax is not because of signal loss but because you'd want a better shielded cable to reduce the interference this older coax picks up from the surrounding environment. That interference would be different based on channel/frequency, I think...
Of course if you'd notice a kink or something bad in any area of the coax length other than just the ends, that upgrade alone would help too. Just my 2 cents.

Last personal note about coax cables if you're about to make a change; in my opinion compression type coax F connectors make a much better, tight and usually weatherproof end than crimp type connectors.

Hey,

Good tropo night for NBC 5.1 (Real 14). It's comming in at 50% power.

Enjoy.

Hello everyone, I think I have antenna issues.

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/picture.php?albumid=805&pictureid=4298

Several weeks ago I move my no name 1980s combo antenna outdoor. Now that the digital revolution is finished, I can't receive ANY VHF station. UHF is fine all with S/N of +25db. However

13-1 13 db no picture
9-1 16 db pixialted
6-1 random no lock nothing.

My current work around is a home build rabbit ears in door at ground level. which pulls in 13-1 & 9-1, but still no Global (6-1)

Things I think is wrong:

Metal chimney is interfering
My combo have a busted limb
Signal is too weak to move down 50' of RG6
Mismatch between RG6 and RG59

Any ideals to fix my Predicament?
Could I fix it or should I gang a UHF antenna or Just buy another antenna?
Do I need an amp?

Perhaps you could post some pictures of the antenna (inclusd a closeup and a long shot) so we could see if there is any obvious damage.

I am not sure this is the best place to post this.

But I record "The Colbert Report" in Ottawa on 13.1 OTA.

A great many times, the last few minutes is cutoff when 13.1 abruptly stops transmitting. It happened almost every weeknight this week (mon-Thur). I have seen this happening even before the Digital Switchover.

I was watching live one night when it happened, and every channel I have tuned on that Tower (4.1,6.1,13.1, 24.1) went offline one by one until they were all offline at 1:15 AM.

Anyone know what is going on with that?

4.1 and 9.1 down atm for me.

6.1 has went from 100% clear to have some slight pixelation over the last two days. Global SNR is ranging from 16 to 17 atm.

I'm in Sandy Hill and I get:

4-1 CBOT-DT (CBC Ottawa) 1080i
9-1 CBOFT-D (SRC Ottawa) 1080i
11-1 CHCHDT1 (CHCH) 480i
13-1 CJOH (CTV1) 1080i
14-1 OMNI2 1080i
24-1 TVO 1080i
30-1 CIVO-DT 1080i
40-1 CHOT 1080i
42-1 CTS-HD 1080i
43-1 CHRO (CTV2) 1080i
60-1 OMNI1 1080i

with a $5 pair of rabbit ears. I'll try a better antenna and report back.

Hello,

Is this because of a good weather. I can get, (5.1,2), (18.1,2,3), (28.1,2), (57.1,2,3).

Thanks,

The last three (18.1,2,3, 28.1,2 and 57.1,2,3) can be received by some in the Ottawa area all the time, we are within their outer range. If you can't typically get them, then, yes it's because of good tropo.

So...I finally caved in and replaced the cheap RCA indoor antenna I'd been using with a CM4220HD. Since I live in an apartment, I can't mount anything on the roof so I placed it in a window facing south-west. Although it's definitely an improvement, I only receive the following:

4.1
9.1
13.1
14.1
24.1
30.1
34 (analog)
40.1
43.1

Oddly enough, I don't receive RF17 (City TV), RF22 (CHCH), RF27 (Omni 1) or RF42 (CTS). According to my TV Fool report, RF22 and RF42 have a higher NM than 43.1 but I don't receive either RF22 or RF42.

In terms of signal strength, the HC stations vary between 50% - 60% and the CF stations varybetween 65% - 75%. Would a pre-amp help me receive the missing HC stations?

Here's my TV fool report:

I also have had no success locking onto CityTV on 17. Because of my fortunate placement, in a townhouse sitting on the line between CF and Manotick, with good lines of sight in both directions, I can do well with indoor antennas attached to an HDHomerun3 tuner, mounted on a second-floor South-facing wall. I have a Philips SDV3132 which is good for the Omnis, but has no VHF twigs, and a Rosewill DA3920A with a built-in preamp that gets everything else. By tweaking and rotating the Rosewill, I can pick up everything, including Global, CBOFT, and 42. City, though, is completely unreachable. I can rarely even get a signal lock, and when I do, I get a 0% stream extraction rate.

Snowdog,

I suspect you have/are encountering maintenance issues with the transmitters.

Even though the official transition occurred Aug 31st, the work preparing for the transition occurred over several nights typically after midnight during August.

And even though the transition has now occurred, work continues on tweaking the system (sometimes even during the daytime).

EPA,

My TVFool profile is rather similar to yours. I usually get WNPI and WCFE at night during the summer (although even with improvement I made this summer, I expect to lose them over winter as I did last year).

And yes there was strong Tropo this morning coming from Watertown. I picked up 7.1, 7.2, 16.1, 16.2, 16.3, 50.1 and 50.2 this morning. I've never had 7.1/7.2 before.

I agree it is probably something like that but this happens so much, I am surprised I haven't seen complaints about it. I suppose a small proportion of people are getting their TV OTA and a smaller proportion is recording Colbert or any other show post 1AM on weeknights.
