: ON - Ottawa, Vanier, Gloucester, Orleans - OTA
dwhitten 2011-09-03, 10:26 AM I'm on Grenon Ave just South of Richmond Rd. We have a 4 bay digital antenna on the roof pointing south and a preamp. We set everything up just to get WPBS, which we have been getting for the last 2 years since we went OTA.
Can't get WPBS at all, it doesn't even show up in a channel scan now. It started maybe a day or so ago.
For the last couple weeks it had been coming in better than ever - sometimes at almost full strength, so I was pretty hopeful that it would continue. We watch WPBS a lot, and haven't had cable for a couple of years now.
I know they are doing some stuff to their studio, maybe that is affecting something?
Anyone else having the same problem?
Yesterday we didn't even get CBC but it is back now.
I am happy to finally get CJOH again, it had been unwatchable for us, and TVO.
Thanks,
Deb
flavoie 2011-09-03, 12:51 PM jimlum, I completely agree with what AnalogMig says.
You should point your 4221 at HC. These are your harder to get channels. You would be getting the stronger CF channels off the back of the antenna.
If VHF is still a problem, you can try adding a better VHF antenna to your 4221hd which is excellent for UHF. Some people have simply added rabbit ears on the roof...
Can't get WPBS at all, it doesn't even show up in a channel scan now. It started maybe a day or so ago.I also did have problems tuning in WNPI (WPBS) last night. Luckily I'm always able to alternatively tune in WCFE (Mountain Lake PBS).
I did not have as many problems tuning in WNYF/WWNY (Fox/CBS) last night; they are broadcast from the same tower as WNPI, but at lower power.
I asked about this (earlier in this thread) and the theory was that WNPI (virtual 18.1/2/3, real channel RF 23) might be subject to adjacent channel interference from local channels 22 and 24 (TVO). Channel 22 was used by CBOFT 9.1 prior to September 1st broadcasting from the north (Camp Fortune). Since September 1st, channel RF 22 is now used by CHCH (virtual 11.1), broadcasting from the south. So unfortunately it's possible that the new CHCH digital broadcast is interfering with your reception of WBPS?
BTW, the reason you probably have been getting really good reception of WNPI in the past weeks was due to good tropospheric conditions. I don't think they were as good last night.
charettepa 2011-09-03, 06:41 PM I have replaced my 91XG with a CM4228
i now get chro solid
i guess the 91xg is not good for local reception
it is great for long distance and extreemly directional
people tried to tell mebut i didnt listen
for ottawa the winning combination is
UHF CM4228
VHF vip302SR or equivalent full VHF 2-13 Antenna
AMP CM7777 or CM7778
jimlum 2011-09-03, 07:33 PM Thanks for the comments Charettepa and flavoie and AnalogMig and Jeff.
I am starting the process of moving my antennas outside from an interior
room and running RJ 6 around the outside brickwork.
During this effort I will point to HC tower and see what happens.
I had tight space issues with my intended site but I am going with plan B
which gives me flexability and elevation and I hope limited down side.
I may upgrade to a VHF antenna add on to improve the Global problem.
exterior grade channel 6 rabbit ears ? The size thing appeals.
Quality advice and hardware has helped a lot so far.
Thanks Jim
flavoie 2011-09-03, 09:14 PM Charettepa this is great news ! I know you've done a lot of work on your setup, it must be great to finally nail it.
As for me, my next plan to try getting Global will be to bring my unused Kitz KT200 in the attic with my 302sr, this will reduce the coax length before a preamp; my current setup has a coax length of about 20-25 feet before the cm7777 which resides next to my 4228hd on the roof. Reaiming will also be easier in digital...
I hope I get some time to do that...
charettepa 2011-09-03, 09:23 PM I'm pretty happy with the results
i have had it on chro since 2pm to make sure its ok
its been solid
very few discontinuities
never enough to even be noticeable
i have also been checking other channels
all are good
previously it would not work in this weather
i now know the problem was the 91xg
its designed for long range
and when there is tropo
long range channels actually interfere
given that i am in a location that cannot get any channels from the states
bottom of hill orleans by the river
my goal is to get locals only
and my new combination is capable of doing that
Andrew ren 2011-09-03, 10:35 PM charettepa,
That's great! It's must be exciting, as I do have almost the same experience before.
Thanks for the input.
Andrew
charettepa 2011-09-04, 08:45 AM Looks like i jumped the gun
ever since the storm last night
no CTV2
it worked fine throughout the storm
but once the rain stopped
the channel would not come in at all
not even on the one tv that used to pull it in
charettepa 2011-09-04, 09:56 AM please tell me i'm not alone
anyone else having an issue with 43.1?

I'm getting it perfectly at 98% with a 33 SNR ratio from downtown Ottawa using a 2nd story DB8 antenna.
I'll admit, there's not much to watch on it right now ("Look a likes" just started).
I notice that 30.1 is off the air at the moment and last night I was unable to get 9.1 from a top floor downtown condo unit. 9.1 is working fine right now.

the status of 30.1 and 43.1, confirmed...
Sorry, but 43.1 CHRO is fine for me here (rabbit ears in apartment building near Montfort hosp. facing south), coming in clean last night and today. Constant 100% signal, ~36 dB SNR, looks good. (did have a weird audio track 1 last night, tracks 2&3 ok, all ok now)
I do have some problems (glitches) once in a while with 13.1 CJOH, but I think it's because the VHF signals have more problems penetrating my building to reach my south facing apartment; I get an ok signal, but it appears to be susceptible to electromagnetic disturbances. If I switch on and off a fan the CJHO signal is temporarily disrupted (glitch). I suspect other electromagnetic activities in the building are causing the glitches.
charettepa 2011-09-04, 10:53 AM what are you guys using to figure out SNR
http://www.hauppauge.com/site/support/support_digital_signal_monitor.html
what are you guys using to figure out SNRMy Samsung TV (Menu > Support > Self Diagnosis > Signal Information).
charettepa 2011-09-04, 11:48 AM my SNR varies greatly
between 15 and 21
as soon as it is 16.5 or less
no channel
as soon as its over 16.5 its good
the problem is that its all over the place
how could it work during the storm and now have a problem with no storm
and why does the snr vary so much
correction
it now goes as low as 0 and as high as 21
its really all over the place
all other channels have zero issues
charettepa, it's not that much of a mystery given your TVFool report... 2Edge can be disturbed by many things.
charettepa 2011-09-04, 12:16 PM everything else at hc is perfect though
even omni1
which has a .5dbm difference
